Influence of remediation on sediment toxicity within the Grand Calumet River, Indiana, USA.

The Grand Calumet River (GCR), located in northern Indiana, is contaminated due to a wide range of historical industrial activities. This study was conducted to determine the influence of sediment remediation within the GCR on concentrations of chemical contaminants and toxicity to sediment-dwelling organisms. Between 2005 and 2016, sediments with high concentrations of metals and toxic organic compounds were remediated through a combination of removal, addition of activated carbon and organoclay amendments, and capping with sand or relatively uncontaminated sediment. Short-term and long-term

Metal/metalloid and phosphorus characteristics in porewater associated with manganese geochemistry: A case study in the Jiulong River Estuary, China.

Sediment porewater can be an important source of contaminants in the overlying water, but the mechanisms of metal(loid) and phosphorus (P) remobilization remain to be investigated. In this study, high-resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) samplers were used to determine the porewater dissolved iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), vanadium (V), selenium (Se), arsenic (As), P and DGT-Labile S in coastal sediments in the Jiulong River Estuary (JRE), China. The results showed that high concentrations of dissolved Mn, Se and P were present in

Source identification of arsenic contamination in agricultural soils surrounding a closed Cu smelter, South Korea.

Arsenic sources were identified in As-contaminated soils 4 km-7 km from a closed Cu smelter. Host rocks, heavy minerals in contaminated soils, ore minerals in quartz veins (geogenic sources) and bottom ash from the Cu smelter (an anthropogenic source) were investigated as potential sources. As a result, heavy minerals and bottom ash were found to contain higher As concentrations than the contaminated soils. Some of the host rock samples also showed higher As levels than the contaminated soils. Arsenopyrite was one of the frequently detected ore minerals in quartz veins. The As concentrations i

An alternative approach to bioaccumulation assessment of methyl-Hg, total-Hg, Cd, Pb, Zn in bivalve Anomalocardia brasiliana from Rio de Janeiro bays.

We present an alternative approach for establishing in situ bioaccumulation assessment of methyl-Hg (MeHg), total-Hg, Cd, Pb and Zn in bivalve Anomalocardia brasiliana from four bays of Rio de Janeiro presenting varying degrees of eutrophication, acid volatile sulfides (2-55 μmol g-1), simultaneously extracted metals (SEM) and total metals (TM) in sediments. Using metal concentrations of composite samples from three size classes of bivalve and their incorporation rates (IR = metal concentration / total length), which depend on exposure time, we calculated asymptotic IR and respective consequen

Indigenous microbial communities along the NW Portuguese Coast: Potential for hydrocarbons degradation and relation with sediment contamination.

Hydrocarbon degradation (HD) potential by autochthonous microorganisms in the coastal sediments of the NW area of Portugal (coastal sandy beaches and estuaries of the rivers Minho and Douro) was evaluated, investigating if water and sediment contamination/characteristics influence it. Sediments were characterized for microbial abundance (by DAPI), HD microorganisms' abundance (by MPN), microbial community structure (by ARISA), hydrocarbons (by FTIR and SPME-GC-MS), hazardous and noxious substances (SPME-GC-MS) and metals (by AAS). To our knowledge, this is the first time all these pollutants,

Mercury remediation in wetland sediment using zero-valent iron and granular activated carbon.

Wetlands are hotspots for production of toxic methylmercury (MeHg) that can bioaccumulate in the food web. The objective of this study was to determine whether the application of zero-valent iron (ZVI) or granular activated carbon (GAC) to wetland sediment could reduce MeHg production and bioavailability to benthic organisms. Field mesocosms were installed in a wetland fringing Hodgdon Pond (Maine, USA), and ZVI and GAC were applied. Pore-water MeHg concentrations were lower in treated compared with untreated mesocosms; however, sediment MeHg, as well as total Hg (THg), concentrations were not

Thermal preferences and limits of Triatoma brasiliensis in its natural environment--field observations while host searching.

The goal of this work was to explore the thermal relationship between foraging Triatoma brasiliensis and its natural habitat during the hottest season in the state of Ceará, Brazil. The thermal profiles were determined using infrared analysis. Although the daily temperature of rock surfaces varied in a wide range, T. brasiliensis selected to walk through areas with temperatures between 31.7-40.5ºC. The temperature of T. brasiliensis body surface ranged from 32.8-34.4ºC, being higher in legs than the abdomen. A strong relationship was found between the temperature of the insect and the temperat

Determination of metronidazole residues in water, sediment and fish tissue samples.

Metronidazole (MNZ) is an antibacterial and antiprotozoal drug used in veterinary and human medicine. Its continual entry into the environment and its biological properties may have significant, long-term effects on the stability of ecosystems because MNZ and its metabolites possess mutagenic, carcinogenic and toxic properties. For this reason, the application of MNZ in food-producing species is prohibited in the EU, the USA and other countries. To ensure human food safety and to protect the environment, robust and reliable screening and confirmatory tests capable of the low-level detection of

Mackinawite (FeS) reduces mercury(II) under sulfidic conditions.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxicant of global concern that accumulates in organisms as methyl Hg. The production of methyl Hg by anaerobic bacteria may be limited in anoxic sediments by the sequestration of divalent Hg [Hg(II)] into a solid phase or by the formation of elemental Hg [Hg(0)]. We tested the hypothesis that nanocrystalline mackinawite (tetragonal FeS), which is abundant in sediments where Hg is methylated, both sorbs and reduces Hg(II). Mackinawite suspensions were equilibrated with dissolved Hg(II) in batch reactors. Examination of the solid phase using Hg LIII-edge extended X-ray absorpt

Groundwater uranium origin and fate control in a river valley aquifer.

Groundwater in a Quaternary gravel aquifer partly exhibits uranium (U) concentrations exceeding the new German drinking water limitation (22% of the samples >10 μg L(-1)). This study assesses relevant U reservoirs and hydrogeochemical processes responsible for U transfer between them. A large data set of solid materials (sediments and soils, 164 samples total) and groundwater (114 samples total) characteristics was created in terms of geo- and hydrochemistry, mineralogy, U microdistribution, and mobilization potential. Results show that U primarily derived from lignitic inclusions in Tertiary

Anatomy of a decision: potential regulatory outcomes from changes to chemistry protocols in the Canadian Disposal at Sea Program.

Environment Canada currently assesses dredged material proposed for disposal at sea using a two-tiered assessment framework. Tier 1 determines sediment geophysical properties and concentrations of four regulated chemical constituents (Cd, Hg, PAH and PCB), and "other chemicals of interest" based on lower action levels; this is followed by biological assessment. EC is pursuing a "data mining" approach to evaluate potential refinements by compiling sediment chemistry and toxicity datasets, and subjecting them to a series of decision protocols. This paper reports on database development and initi

An evaluation of several in-lake restoration techniques to improve the water quality problem (eutrophication) of Saint-Augustin Lake, Quebec, Canada.

Increasing phosphorus (P) content and decreasing water quality of Saint-Augustin Lake, Quebec City, Canada, has led to implementation of an Integrated Watershed Management Plan to restore the lake. As a part of the plan, the effects of different restoration techniques on lake water quality and biological community (i.e., biological compatibility) were assessed during an isolated water enclosure study and laboratory microcosm assay, respectively. The restoration techniques include: (i) coagulation of P by alum only (20 mg L(-1)), (ii) active capping of sediments using a calcite layer of 10 cm,

Contribution of coexisting sulfate and iron reducing bacteria to methylmercury production in freshwater river sediments.

We investigated microbial methylmercury (CH(3)Hg) production in sediments from the South River (SR), VA, an ecosystem contaminated with industrial mercury (Hg). Potential Hg methylation rates in samples collected at nine sites were low in late spring and significantly higher in late summer. Demethylation of (14)CH(3)Hg was dominated by (14)CH(4) production in spring, but switched to producing mostly (14)CO(2) in the summer. Fine-grained sediments originating from the erosion of river banks had the highest CH(3)Hg concentrations and were potential hot spots for both methylation and demethylatio

Methylmercury in water, sediment, and invertebrates in created wetlands of Rouge Park, Toronto, Canada.

Thousands of hectares of wetlands are created annually because wetlands provide beneficial ecosystem services. Wetlands are also key sites for production of the bioaccumulative neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg), but little is known about MeHg production in created systems. Here, we studied methylmercury in sediment, water, and invertebrates in created wetlands of various ages. Sediment MeHg reached 8 ng g(-1) in the newest wetland, which was significantly greater than in natural, control wetlands. This trend was mirrored in several invertebrate taxa, whose concentrations reached as high as 1.6 μ

Effects of copper and cadmium spiked-sediments on embryonic development of Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes).

Because of their high capacity to accumulate contaminants such as persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals, aquatic sediments are considered as a long-term source of contamination for aquatic organisms. In compliance with the increasing interest both for sediment quality evaluation and the use of fish early life stage (ELS) toxicity assays, we proposed an embryo-larval test to evaluate embryotoxicity and genotoxicity of sediment-bound contaminants. Pre-blastula stage medaka (Oryzias latipes) embryos were exposed by static sediment contact to two model heavy metals (cadmium and copper) at

Bioaccumulation and metabolism of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in carp (Cyprinus carpio) in a water/sediment microcosm: important role of particulate matter exposure.

Microcosms were built up to simulate a pond system with polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) contaminated sediment and bioorganisms. The microcosms were divided into groups A and B. In group A, both benthic invertebrates (tubificid worms) and carp (Cyprinu carpio) were added, while in group B, only fish were added. After exposure for 20 d, the fish were sampled (exposure I). A net was fixed in the microcosms, and new fish were added (exposure II). These fish were prohibited from contacting the sediment by the net, and the accumulation and depuration of PBDEs in the fish were investigated. Amon

Intercomparison and applicability of some dynamic and equilibrium approaches to determine methylated mercury species in pore water.

To assess adequately the impact of methylmercury (MeHg) on sensitive wetland ecosystems, accurate measurements of MeHg in pore water are required. In the present study, the feasibility of three methods for porewater sampling was investigated with respect to MeHg in sediments and rice paddy fields. The performance of dialysis samplers (peepers), sediment core sectioning followed by porewater separation by centrifugation (core), and the thin film diffusive samplers (DGT) were evaluated. These methods were intercompared in field experiments at two sites in Guizhou province, SW China disparately i
