Thirteen sheep from a milk producing farm in the Canton of Grisons that presented chronic coenurosis were examined and subjected to treatment trials at the veterinary hospital in Zurich. Symptoms were first observed around two months after the import of two dogs from Italy (Abruzza) of which one was infected with Taenia multiceps and Echinococcus granulosus. The most frequently observed clinical symptoms of the sheep were reduced general condition, circling, reduced menace reflex, apathy, unsteady gait and head tilt. Analyses of cerebrospinal fluid revealed an increased leucocyte count in 3 sh

BACKGROUND: The most prevalent yet neglected cestode meat-borne parasitic zoonoses are bovine cysticercosis and cystic echinococcosis, while the most common meat-borne protozoan zoonoses are toxoplasmosis and cryptosporidiosis in Ethiopia. In Ethiopia, bovine cysticercosis, cystic echinococcosis, toxoplasmosis, and cryptosporidiosis are the most common but neglected meat-borne parasites. The main transmission route is through contaminated meat products. The aim of this review was to provide an overall prevalence estimation of major food-borne zoonotic parasitic in ruminants in Ethiopia.

Relocation is one of the mitigating measures taken by either local people or related officers to reduce the human-bonnet macaque Macaca radiata conflict in India. The review on relocations of primates in India indicates that monkeys are unscreened for diseases or gastrointestinal parasites (henceforth endoparasites) before relocation. We collected 161 spatial samples from 20 groups of bonnet macaque across their distribution range in south India and 205 temporal samples from a group in Chiksuli in the central Western Ghats. The isolation of endoparasite eggs/cysts from the fecal samples was by

BACKGROUND: Parasitic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are a major health problem worldwide, especially in the Third World countries, where poor standards of hygiene and sanitation as well as the lack of medical care facilitate the spread of food and waterborne infections.
AIM: To estimate the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in Central Asia on the example of the population inhabiting the Ghazni Province in eastern part of the country and to assess the validity of the WHO recommended mass deworming campaign carried out in Afghanistan. Taking into consideration the fact that

Methods to maintain the life cycle of pathogenic organisms become powerful tools for studying molecular and cellular bases of infectious diseases. Spirometra erinaceieuropaei is a parasitic tapeworm that causes sparganosis in humans. Because S. erinaceieuropaei has a complex life cycle with different stages and host species requirements, there have been no reports to establish the complete life cycle in the laboratory. In this study, using Cyclops as the first intermediate host, mouse as the experimental second intermediate host, and dog as the final host, we succeeded in maintaining S. erinac

Genus Mesocestoides is a representative of the small cyclophyllidean family Mesocestoididae that is found parasitizing the small intestine of carnivores. The life cycle of cestodes from this genus is complex and requires two intermediate hosts. Cysticercoids are produced in the first intermediate host (oribatid mites), which when eaten by the second intermediate host (mainly rodents, but also other mammalian species, birds, reptiles, or amphibians) form tetrathyridia in the body cavity. Because of the rich history of nomenclatural evaluation of Mesocestoididae, the taxonomic status within the

A 7-year-old Thoroughbred horse was admitted to the Equine Hospital, Korea Racing Association with signs of colic. Based on the size of impactions, the clinical signs, the results of abdominal paracentesis and medical treatment, the prognosis was poor. The horse died 3 hours later following hopeless discharge. At necropsy, the caecum and large colon were fully filled with fecal contents and there was a rupture (10 cm in dia) in the latero- ventral caecum. The mucosa of the ileo-caecal and caeco- colic valves appeared to the hyperemic, edematous and ulcerous. There were many tapeworms in the af

Through an epidemiological review on the zoonotic tapeworms in Korea, the frequency and severity of the zoonoses have been recognized. Taeniasis and human cysticercosis are of importance to the public health in Korea. The frequency of taeniasis is 0.3% to 12.7% discovered by stool examination and 4.5% to 38.0% discovered by questionaire survey. Taeniasis occurs more frequently in males than in females and, especially, in both sexes in the age-group of 20 to 49. T. saginata is more common that T. solium. No case of human cysticercosis caused by T.saginata has been reported in Korea. To the cont

A new species of Acanthobothrium is described from the spiral intestine of Raja asterias Delaroche and Raja radula Delaroche in the Algerian Mediterranean Sea. Acanthobothrium oualimeriemae n. sp. was characterized using an integrative approach combining morphological and molecular (28S rDNA) data. The new species is assigned to morphological category 2 and can be distinguished from all known congeners by a unique combination of features, including total body length, number of proglottids, scolex configuration, dimensions of bothridial structures, length of the cephalic peduncle, length of the

PURPOSE: Bats harbor a diverse spectrum of gastrointestinal parasites, including trematodes, cestodes, and nematodes. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and diversity of gastrointestinal helminths in bats from cave and wetland environments in northern Iran, where bat parasitology remains largely unexplored. The research seeks to expand the regional records of bat parasites and establish a parasitological baseline for future ecological and epidemiological studies.
METHODS: A parasitological survey was conducted on 13 individuals from three bat species (Miniopterus pallidus, Rhinolo

Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) surveillance in Italy is based on detection of its larval stage (hydatic cysts) at the slaughterhouse. In northern Italy, a hypo-endemic area, local health authorities investigate each individual farm with positive animals to treat their dogs with cestocidal drugs, but this system is time-consuming and poorly effective for bovine farms. The study applied a new approach based on targeted epidemiological surveys in areas with aggregation of bovine CE cases, and compared the outcome with that of two control areas with farms individually investigated. The presence of ter

Ventricular involvement in neurocysticercosis (NCC), a common serious manifestation of NCC, has distinct clinical presentations, complications, and treatments primarily because of partial or complete obstruction of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow by Taenia solium cysts. We review the clinical course, treatments, and long-term outcomes in 23 of 121 (19.0%) total NCC patients with ventricular cysts referred to the National Institutes of Health from 1985 to the October 2017. Patients had a median age of 31.8 (range: 22.4-52.6 years), were 60.9% male, diagnosed a median of 6.5 years (range: 0.1

A histopathologic study of free-ranging hummingbirds found in California, US was performed to identify mortality trends. Tissues from 61 wild hummingbirds representing five native California species collected by the San Diego Zoo from 1996 to 2016 or the Lindsay Wildlife Experience from 2015 to 2017 were histologically examined. Birds were either found dead or moribund at the time of submission or were euthanized due to unresolvable health issues. Long-term rehabilitated birds were excluded from this study. Lesions were sorted by organ, etiology, and gender. The most commonly affected organs w

Wildlife remains an important source of zoonotic diseases for the most vulnerable groups of humans, primarily those living in rural areas or coexisting with forest. The Upper Paraná Atlantic forest of Misiones, Argentina is facing ongoing environmental and anthropogenic changes, which affect the local biodiversity, including the bush dog (Speothos venaticus), a small canid considered Near Threatened globally and Endangered locally. This project aimed to expand the knowledge of zoonotic parasites present in the bush dog and the potential implications for human health and conservation medicine.

Alveolar echinococcosis is caused by a parasitic tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis and is a serious disease with high fatality in humans. The definitive primary host is the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) but domestic animals (dogs and to a lesser extent cats) as well as several genera of rodents can also be infected with the parasite. There is, to date, no evidence of indigenous cases of E. multilocularis in Great Britain (GB) but in most of continental Europe the parasite is considered to be endemic and/or slowly spreading. All pet dogs entering the United Kingdom (UK) under the pet travel scheme

Infections with cestodes from genus Echinococcus are usually acquired by oral ingestion of eggs, direct contact with carriers, and contaminated food (especially vegetables) or water. Echinococcosis, previously characterized as a malady of medical importance only, depends upon veterinary solutions and faces political obstacles; it is considered the most important zoonotic disease in Romania. As a result of the increased number of human and animal cases, Romania was framed in the forefront of the European countries and among the first countries worldwide in 1995. The present paper is the first i

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection in humans by a larval cestode of the genus Spirometra. Preoperative diagnosis of cerebral sparganosis in the past has been very difficult. Our objective was to evaluate the CT and MR features of cerebral sparganosis in order to make a definite diagnosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 25 patients (13 male and 12 female; age range, 9-83 years) who proved to have cerebral sparganosis. Fifteen patients underwent MR imaging: 2 patients had CT scanning, and the remaining 8 had both CT and MR scanning. We focused

Much progress has recently been made in revising the taxonomic assignments of genera originally classified in the polyphyletic "Tetraphyllidea." Many of these genera, including Echeneibothrium, were accommodated in the order Rhinebothriidea. However, beyond this larger taxonomic action, little work has been conducted on this genus over the past 50 yr. Consequently, the criteria used for characterizing species of Echeneibothrium have lagged behind those typically used in more modern descriptions of elasmobranch-hosted cestode taxa. A series of collecting trips to Chile to obtain cestodes from t
