Non-drug therapies for lower limb muscle cramps.

BACKGROUND: About one in every three adults are affected by lower limb muscle cramps. For some people, these cramps reduce quality of life, quality of sleep and participation in activities of daily living. Many interventions are available for lower limb cramps, but some are controversial, no treatment guidelines exist, and often people experience no benefit from the interventions prescribed. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of non-drug, non-invasive treatments for lower limb cramp. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Neuromuscular Disease Group Specialized Register (13 September 2011)

Impact of Surgical Timing on Functional Outcomes after Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

Objectives: Although acute anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is often avoided because of postoperative joint stiffness, delayed ACLR can lead to a longer recovery time and can have a negative impact on physical function due to detraining. This study aimed to determine the effects of acute ACLR on postoperative outcomes, including muscle strength, performance, and return to sports. Methods: A total of 110 patients who underwent anatomical ACLR using hamstring autografts were included in this study and were divided into three groups: acute (ACLR performed within 2 weeks after ACL

Postpartum Sciatic Neuropathy After Uncomplicated Vaginal Delivery.

Postpartum neuropathies are common, including femoral neuropathy, peroneal neuropathy, lumbosacral trunk plexopathy, and lateral femoral cutaneous neuropathy. Sciatic mononeuropathy in the peripartum period is rare. Postpartum sciatic neuropathy (PSN) in the setting of cesarean section has been reported before. We present a case series of 2 sciatic mononeuropathies after vaginal delivery. Case 1 is a 25-year-old woman who presented with a left foot drop after normal vaginal delivery after being in labor for 3 hours. Case 2 is a 24-year-old woman who presented with a right foot drop after norma

Use of ultrasonographic guidance in interventional musculoskeletal procedures: a review from a single institution.

We have evaluated the utility of ultrasonographic guidance for intervention in the musculoskeletal system. All interventional musculoskeletal procedures using ultrasonographic guidance performed at our institution from July 1998 through November 1999 were reviewed. Examinations were performed using either a linear or curved phased array transducer, based on depth and local geometry. The choice of needle was likewise optimized for specific anatomic conditions. One hundred ninety-five procedures were performed on 167 patients from July 1998 through November 1999. Thirty-one procedures had magnet

Soft-tissue quadriceps tendon autograft during primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in Skeletally-immature patients vs. Hamstrings: A protocol for a multi-centre randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: ACL tears in skeletally-immature patients are often treated surgically using soft-tissue autografts to offset increased risks of cartilage, meniscus and physeal injuries. Despite technological innovation, there remains a high failure rate among active young patients. We present a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate the soft-tissue quadriceps autograft compared to the standard hamstring autograft to treat primary ACL tears in the pediatric population. METHODS: This international RCT will evaluate 352 skeletally-immature patients between the ages of 10-18 years undergoing
