Genomic surveillance of enterovirus D68 circulating in 2025 reveals the emergence of a novel A2/B3 recombinant lineage.

Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) has re-emerged over the past decade as a significant respiratory pathogen associated with severe respiratory disease and acute flaccid myelitis. Its circulation has typically followed a biennial pattern, with predominance in late summer and early fall, a pattern that was temporarily disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Surveillance in 2025 revealed off-season circulation of EV-D68. This study describes the genomic characteristics of the 2025 EV-D68 viruses and the clinical features of affected patients. Between May and December 2025, remnant respiratory specimens po

A Cloud-Based Platform for Harmonized COVID-19 Data: Design and Implementation of the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) Data Hub.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant limitations in existing data infrastructure, particularly the lack of systems for rapidly collecting, integrating, and analyzing data to support timely and evidence-based public health responses. These shortcomings hampered efforts to conduct comprehensive analyses and make rapid, data-driven decisions in response to emerging threats. To overcome these challenges, the US National Institutes of Health launched the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) initiative. A key component of this initiative is the RADx Data Hub-a centralized, cloud

Genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in Tunisia during the omicron era: insights from the national influenza & other respiratory viruses laboratory.

BACKGROUND: Omicron sublineages have dominated global SARS-CoV-2 circulation since late 2021, but there aren't enough multi-year datasets that detail lineage dynamics and genomic surveillance performance in North Africa. The National Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses Laboratory in Tunisia has been conducting integrated SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance for four years. METHODS: Between 1 November 2021 and 30 September 2025, 8,635 nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS) received through the national sentinel network were tested for SARS-CoV-2 by real-time RT-PCR, of which 1,020 (11.8%) were positive. Uncovering the Burden of Influenza-Associated Illness across Levels of Severity in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Across Three Seasons.

BACKGROUND: Influenza imposes a substantial global health burden, particularly among high-risk populations such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with chronic conditions. In Saudi Arabia, a national influenza sentinel surveillance program was established in 2017 to monitor respiratory virus trends, yet comprehensive estimates of the influenza-associated burden remain limited. This study aims to address this gap by quantifying influenza-associated severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) hospitalization rates and estimating the broader influenza burden across severity levels. Early mucosal IFN-α, IP-10, and IL-1RA and synchronized mucosal and systemic immune responses mediate COVID-19 disease progression.

UNLABELLED: Mucosal immunity plays a crucial role in protection against respiratory viruses. However, the mechanisms underlying mucosal responses and their impact on COVID-19 outcomes are not well understood, as mucosal immunity is compartmentalized and not always reflected in the bloodstream. This study examined primary immune responses in 584 mucosal and blood specimens collected over a month from previously naïve adults and children with COVID-19. Various laboratory techniques were utilized to quantify and characterize viral RNA, antigens, antibodies, and cytokines in the samples, including

Association of Jail Decarceration and Anticontagion Policies With COVID-19 Case Growth Rates in US Counties.

IMPORTANCE: Mass incarceration is known to foster infectious disease outbreaks, amplification of infectious diseases in surrounding communities, and exacerbation of health disparities in disproportionately policed communities. To date, however, policy interventions intended to achieve epidemic mitigation in US communities have neglected to account for decarceration as a possible means of protecting public health and safety. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of jail decarceration and government anticontagion policies with reductions in the spread of SARS-CoV-2. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTI

Comparative Evaluation of Effectiveness of Standard of Care Alone and in Combination With Homoeopathic Treatment in COVID-19-Related Rhino-Orbito-Cerebral Mucormycosis (ROCM): Protocol for a Single Blind, Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is the most common (45%-74%) mucormycosis in India. With contemporary medical care, ROCM has a mortality rate of 40%-50% and 70% of survivors are left with residual defects. Recently, several cases of mucormycosis in people with COVID-19 have been increasingly reported worldwide, from India, due to immune dysregulation caused by SARS-CoV-2. To reduce the high mortality rate and residual defect in most survivors under the guidelines of the Ministry of AYUSH, the Government of India recommended homoeopathy as an add-on therapy to maximize th

How Pandemics Have Reshaped the Respiratory Virus Data Landscape in Europe: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory infections caused by influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2 remain a major public health challenge in Europe. Although surveillance systems for these pathogens are well established, the past 2 decades have seen a rapid diversification of data streams supporting surveillance and research. This expanding data landscape, combined with fragmentation across institutions, sectors, and countries, may limit timely evidence synthesis and effective public health decision-making. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to identify and characterize data so

Pulmonary function and comparative SARS-CoV-2 RBD-specific IgG antibody response among the COVID-19 recovered group.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) responsible for millions of deaths and substantial morbidity worldwide. Several studies report that up to 50% of individuals who recover from acute SARS-CoV-2 infection experience a plethora of long-COVID symptoms that may persist for weeks, months, or even up to a year. Abnormal pulmonary function is one of the most critical manifestations of long-COVID, even after recovering from COVID-19. Understanding the long-term pulmonary conseq

The role of mucosal IgA in protection against influenza A H1N1 virus infection in a real-world setting.

BACKGROUND: Parenteral vaccines against influenza virus prevent severe disease but provide limited protection against infection, likely due to limited induction of mucosal immunity. However, direct clinical evidence for mucosal antibody-mediated protection against influenza virus infection in humans has been lacking. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of antigen-specific mucosal IgA as a correlate of protection against influenza virus infection. We investigated H1-specific nasal IgA and serum IgG and the effect on influenza virus infection, with corresponding SARS-CoV-2 data from t

SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence and COVID-19 vaccination coverage in two states of Nigeria from a population based household survey.

SARS-CoV-2 population-based seroprevalence surveys are useful for estimating the extent of SARS-CoV-2 infections, which may be underestimated by COVID-19 case counts. Surveys conducted in October 2020 in four Nigerian states showed that SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence ranged from 9.3% in Gombe (northeast) to 25.2% in Enugu (southeast) after the first COVID-19 wave, more than 100 and 700 times higher than the official number of COVID-19 cases in these two states, respectively. We conducted a serosurvey after the second COVID-19 wave to evaluate the extent of SARS-CoV-2 infections, attitudes to COVID-
