Glomerulonephritis causing acute renal failure during the course of bacterial infections. Histological varieties, potential pathogenetic pathways and treatment.

To illustrate diagnostic approaches, potential pathogenetic differences, epidemiological implications and therapeutic dilemmas posed by glomerulonephritis (GN) with acute renal failure (ARF) complicating bacterial infections, we analyzed the course of four male patients, aged 53-71 years, who developed GN and ARF following bacterial infections. The first two patients developed GN with immunoglobulin A (IgA) deposits after infections with hospital-acquired methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Clinical, serologic and histological features, classification of GN and treatment differ

Longitudinal evaluation of salivary biomarkers and white spot lesion development in patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: This prospective study aimed to evaluate the longitudinal changes in salivary biomarkers in relation to white spot lesion (WSL) development during fixed orthodontic treatment. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal cohort study enrolled 56 systemically healthy patients (aged 18-30years) with mild Class I malocclusion undergoing non-extraction-fixed orthodontic treatment. The participants were classified into two groups based on the development of incident white spot lesions (WSL-present vs. WSL-absent) over a 12-month period. Unstimulated whole saliva was collected at baseline, 6m

Dental caries: an infectious and transmissible disease where have we been and where are we going?

Dental caries is often referred to as an infectious disease, which means different things to different people. Pediatric dentists may be tempted to liken caries to other childhood diseases they encounter yet treat caries from mostly a mechanical or surgical approach. On the other end of the spectrum are clinicians who view the oral cavity as a site teaming with bacteria and think that reducing the overall microbial mass using antimicrobial agents will somehow affect this infectious disease. Here, we argue for another view, that is, to combine the most effective portion of each therapy to yield

Move of adults with mental retardation from institutions to community-based living: changes in the oral microbiological flora.

In the Western world, the policy of deinstitutionalization and integration of individuals with mental retardation is generally accepted. We tested the hypothesis that de-institutionalization may lead to changes of habits with a potential to influence oral health. When 57 adults with mental retardation moved from an institution to community-based living, their oral hygiene habits, gingival bleeding, and a three-day food record were registered one month before and 9 and 21 months after the move. Mutans streptococci and lactobacilli in saliva, P. intermedia/P. nigrescens, P. gingivalis, and A. ac

Effectiveness of a triclosan/copolymer dentifrice on microbiological and inflammatory parameters.

According to the US Surgeon General's report, "Oral Health in America," published in 2000, most adults in the United States show some degree of periodontal pathology, with severe periodontal diseases affecting about 14% of middle-aged adults. Periodontal diseases are polymicrobial-induced inflammatory diseases, and they vary from mild gingival inflammation to severe deterioration of the periodontium, ie, loss of periodontal supportive tissues and, ultimately, tooth loss. New evidence shows that periodontal diseases may impact systemic health. For this reason, the maintenance of a healthy mouth

The Selective Interaction of Pistacia lentiscus Oil vs. Human Streptococci, an Old Functional Food Revisited with New Tools.

Pistacia lentiscus berry oil (LBO) represents a typical vegetal product of the Mediterranean basin that has been formally used in traditional cuisine for 100s of years. In addition to its interesting alimentary properties, this product could represent an interesting candidate in the field of research on the study of new anti-infective agents. In fact, in Mediterranean countries, lentisk oil still continues to be widely used in folk medicine for oral and skin affections, in particular, acute gingivitis, pediatric skin infections such as impetigo and foot plaques, and biofilm related infections

Mutans streptococci and caries prevalence in children after early maternal caries prevention: a follow-up at eleven and fifteen years of age.

AIM: The efficacy of early maternal caries prevention in children was evaluated. METHODS: First-time mothers selected on the basis of a high level of salivary mutans streptococci (MS) and mothers excluded at screening due to a low level of MS ('low') were recalled when their children were 11 years old. The salivary MS level was determined in the mothers. Their children were examined for salivary MS and lesion prevalence (decayed and filled surfaces, DFS) at the ages of 11 and 15 years. RESULTS: More 'high control' mothers displayed ≥10⁶ MS than the 'high interventional' and 'low control' mot

Marginal integrity produced by quaternary ammonium methacrylate-based dental adhesive tested under physiologically relevant models.

OBJECTIVES: Endogenous metalloproteinases (MMPs) lead to dentin collagen degradation when exposed to demineralizing events, such as during the cariogenic process. Quaternary ammonium compounds are known to be antibacterial, and there is also evidence for their action as a MMP inhibitor. The aim of this study was to evaluate a quaternary ammonium-based methacrylate (dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate - DMAHDM, QAM) as an experimental adhesive, tested for bond stability and gap formation under physiologically-relevant conditions using a bioreactor system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The inhibition

Comparative antimicrobial activity of an essential oil and an amine fluoride/stannous fluoride mouthrinse in vitro.

Although laboratory studies are not necessarily predictive of clinical activity; they can help to elucidate mechanisms underlying clinical activity when the latter has been established. In a recent clinical study, an essential oil mouthrinse (Listerine Antiseptic) was shown to be significantly more effective than an amine fluoride/stannous fluoride mouthrinse (Meridol) in inhibiting supragingival plaque formation. This paper reports the results of laboratory studies comparing the antimicrobial effectiveness of these 2 mouthrinses using a kill kinetics assay and a plaque biofilm kill assay. In

Sugar substitutes, chewing gum and dental caries--a review.

The prevalent use of chewing gum has prompted interest in its dental effects. Important defining aspects are the ability to use sugar substitutes in gum manufacture and the prolonged stimulation of a protective flow of saliva. The main sugar substitutes used are sorbitol and xylitol. Because it is not fermented by oral bacteria, xylitol is considered to be non-cariogenic, and while sorbitol in solution can be fermented slowly by mutants streptococci, chewing sorbitol-sweetened gum does not cause a fall in plaque pH. Effects of chewing sugar-free gum on the ability of plaque to form acid from s
