Pretreatment Levels of Soluble Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor 1 and Hepatocyte Growth Factor Predict Toxicity and Overall Survival After 90Y Radioembolization: Potential Novel Application of Biomarkers for Personalized Management of Hepatotoxicity.

Liver function may be negatively affected by radiation for treatment of hepatic malignancy. Pretreatment blood cytokine levels are biomarkers for prediction of toxicity and survival after external-beam radiation therapy. We hypothesized that cytokines may also predict outcomes after radioembolization, enabling a biomarker-driven personalized approach to treatment. Methods: Pretherapy blood samples from patients enrolled on a prospective protocol evaluating 90Y radioembolization for management of intrahepatic malignancy were analyzed for 2 cytokines selected on the basis of prior studies in ste

Quantitative Measurements of Enhancement on Preprocedure Triphasic CT Can Predict Response of Colorectal Liver Metastases to Radioembolization.

OBJECTIVE: Colorectal liver metastases (CLM) have a variable response to radioembolization. This may be due at least partly to differences in tumor arterial perfusion. The present study examines whether quantitative measurements of enhancement on preprocedure triphasic CT can be used to predict the response of CLM to radioembolization. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients with CLM treated with radioembolization who underwent pretreatment PET/CT and triphasic CT examinations and posttreatment PET/CT examinations. A total of 31 consecutive patients with 60 target tumors w

Topical lidocaine or not for laser follicle ablation in pilonidal disease: A prospective, randomized, double-blinded trial.

BACKGROUND: Laser follicle ablation is a significant component of the care in pilonidal disease, but may be uncomfortable secondary to absorption of the light energy by pigment present in the underlying skin. Multiple methods have been proposed to ameliorate the discomfort, including the pre-procedure application of topical lidocaine creams; however, little data exists as to the efficacy of the creams, which must be applied 30-40 min prior to laser treatment. We studied the efficacy of a topical local anesthetic cream for this purpose. METHODS: A prospective, double-blinded, randomized case-c

Mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, and in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility of hot-extruded Zn-5RE (RE = Y, Ho, and Er) alloys for biodegradable bone-fixation applications.

Biodegradable Zn alloys have significant application potential for hard-tissue implantation devices owing to their suitable degradation behavior and favorable biocompatibility. Nonetheless, pure Zn and its alloys in the as-cast state are mechanically instable and low in strength, which restricts their clinical applicability. Here, we report the exceptional mechanical, corrosion, and biocompatibility properties of hot-extruded Zn-5RE (wt.%, RE = rare earth of Y; or Ho; or Er) alloys intended for use in biodegradable bone substitutes. The microstructural characteristics, mechanical behavior, cor
