INTRODUCTION: We assessed whether the Women for Women International (WfWI) economic and social empowerment programme could reduce women's experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) and depression in Afghanistan.
METHODS: We conducted a two-arm individually randomised controlled trial in six urban and peri-urban communities. Communities were selected by WfWI for being conflict affected and showing signs of economic vulnerability (eg, little or no education, living in extreme poverty). Individual eligibility were female, aged 18-49, able to consent to participate and one woman per household

Driven largely by the unequal distribution of power, female sex workers (FSW) globally bear a disproportionately high burden of HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and interpersonal violence. Prior literature has identified a number of multi-level factors that may serve to constrain FSWs' agency, or their ability to define and take action to realize goals. Among these are work-based violence and substance use, which are potentiated by the criminalization of sex work and structural vulnerability. Quantitative research related to U.S.-based FSWs' own sense of agency, as well as the barriers th

BACKGROUND: Over half of the children living with HIV/AIDS suffer from severe acute malnutrition especially in countries having food insecurity like Ethiopia. However, determinants of severe acute malnutrition among HIV-positive children receiving care and treatment in antiretroviral therapy clinics in Ethiopia are not abundantly investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the determinants of severe acute malnutrition among HIV-positive children receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy in public health institutions of the North Wollo Zone, Northeastern Ethiopia.
METHODS: An instit

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has emerged as a serious public health issue in migrant communities in Central Asia and globally. To date, however, research on risk factors associated with male perpetration of IPV among migrants remains scant. This study aims to examine risk environment theory-driven factors associated with male perpetration of IPV in the prior 6 months. We recruited, enrolled, and surveyed a respondent-driven sample of 1342 male market workers in Almaty, Kazakhstan, that included 562 (42%) non-migrants defined as Kazakhstan citizens who reside in Almaty; 502 (37%) external mi

BACKGROUND: Depression is the leading cause of disease-related disability in women and adversely affects the health and well-being of mothers and their children. Studies have shown maternal depression as a risk factor for poor infant growth. Little is known about the situation in Sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of our study was to examine the association between maternal depression and severe acute malnutrition in Kenyan children aged 6-60 months.
METHODS: A matched case-control study was conducted in general paediatric wards at the Kenyatta National Hospital. The cases were children admitted wit

PURPOSE: Civilians living amid conflict are at high-risk of burns. However, the epidemiology of burns among this vulnerable group is poorly understood, yet vital for health policy and relief planning. To address this gap, we aimed to determine the death and disability, healthcare needs and household financial consequences of burns in post-invasion Baghdad.
METHODS: A two-stage, cluster randomized, community-based household survey was performed in May 2014 to determine the civilian burden of injury from 2003 to 2014 in Baghdad. In addition to questions about cause of household member death, ho

Meta-analysis of growth data from over 50 low and low-middle income countries shows a consistent pattern of stunting and poor weight gain from about 3 months of age and persisting until at least 5 years. Children tend not to be wasted because their short stature offsets their underweight, leading to a rather adequately proportioned appearance. This frequently conceals the true levels of malnutrition in communities. At the macro-environmental level such growth faltering is due to the combined effects of poverty, food insecurity, low-dietary diversity, a highly infectious environment, poor washi

BACKGROUND: Perinatal common mental disorders are a major cause of disability among women and have consequences for children's growth and development. We aimed to identify factors associated with psychological distress, a proxy for common mental disorders, among mothers in rural Dhanusha, Nepal.
METHODS: We used data from 9078 mothers who were screened for distress using the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) around six weeks after delivery. We assessed the association between GHQ-12 score and socioeconomic, gender-based, cultural and reproductive health factors using a hierarchica

BACKGROUND: Adequate zinc is critical for immune function; however, zinc deficiency occurs in >50% of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected adults. We examined the safety and efficacy of long-term zinc supplementation in relation to HIV disease progression.
METHODS: A prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial was conducted involving 231 HIV-infected adults with low plasma zinc levels (<0.75 mg/L), who were randomly assigned to receive zinc (12 mg of elemental zinc for women and 15 mg for men) or placebo for 18 months. The primary end point was immunological failure. HIV viral l

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies are increasingly attempting to address non-medical drivers of health (NMDoH) by screening patients for health-related social needs (HRSNs). Cross-training pharmacy technicians as community health workers (PhT-CHWs) may expand pharmacies' capacity to provide these services, but little is known about the community resources identified by PhT-CHWs during training or their associated Z-codes. Characterizing these resources may inform implementation of pharmacy-based community resource referral services.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the NMDoH resources identified by PhTs

PURPOSE: Rural Veterans face barriers to accessing clinical care and community-based services, often exacerbated by social needs. Assessing Circumstances and Offering Resources for Needs (ACORN) is a Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system, Veteran-tailored intervention to screen for social risks (e.g., food insecurity, social isolation) and address social needs. We examined rural-urban differences in social risks and receipt of resources/referrals.
METHODS: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional evaluation using VA administrative data for Veterans screened with ACORN between January 2024

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) are nonmedical factors that impact health outcomes and medication use. As national initiatives and value-based care models prioritize SDOH interventions, pharmacists are uniquely positioned to support these efforts. However, evidence describing pharmacist-led SDOH screening, particularly through collaborations between health-system and community pharmacists, remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: To learn how community pharmacists address SDOH-related care gaps among patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and how vertically integrated partnerships can str

INTRODUCTION: Maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality are a global concern. Understanding the epidemiology of post-discharge complications could identify opportunities for interventions. We aimed to quantify mortality, care-seeking events and readmission among mothers and newborns in Uganda following facility-based delivery.
METHODS: This prospective observational study (Apr 2022-Sep 2023) enrolled women presenting for delivery at two regional referral hospitals in Uganda. Data were collected during admission and 6 weeks after delivery by phone.
RESULTS: Overall, 7131 women delivered 73

PURPOSE: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on young adults with serious mental illnesses is poorly understood despite the high likelihood that important milestones for this group were affected by the pandemic and its economic aftermath. This study explored how U.S. young adults with disability due to mental health disorders experienced transitions to adulthood before and during the pandemic.
METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews with 20 emerging adults, age 18-25 (mean age, 22.3) including 10 female, 4 male, and 6 gender non-binary or other gender individuals, covered 7 life trans

For more than four decades, research on Amazonian riverine populations has been shaped by a single dominant narrative: that mercury (Hg) exposure from fish consumption is the primary driver of neurotoxic risk. While this perspective was pivotal in raising global awareness of methylmercury (MeHg) hazards, it has also constrained scientific inquiry, often obscuring the multifactorial vulnerabilities that characterize these communities. This commentary challenges that reductionist framework by integrating evidence demonstrating a far more complex exposure mosaic. In addition to Hg, riverine popul

Climate variability is reshaping infectious disease risk through ecological, environmental, social, and health-system pathways. However, its operational implications remain insufficiently defined in fragile and conflict-affected settings. Somalia is a critical case because recurrent droughts and floods intersect with displacement, food insecurity, weak water and sanitation infrastructure, disrupted immunisation, livestock dependence, and constrained health-system capacity. This narrative review synthesises evidence on climate-sensitive infectious disease risks in Somalia, examines existing sur

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is a global health threat, especially among women of reproductive age, and it adversely affects the health of both mothers and their children. This study aimed to identify and analyze the causes and management challenges of maternal obesity in Iran from the perspectives of key informants.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a qualitative study. We conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 20 experts, from September to December 2023. We analyzed data using Leichter's (1979) framework through an inductive-deductive approach, facilitated with MAXQDA 2020 software.
