Factors Influencing Recovery From Pediatric Stroke Based on Discussions From a UK-Based Online Stroke Community: Qualitative Thematic Study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of stroke in children is low, and pediatric stroke rehabilitation services are less developed than adult ones. Survivors of pediatric stroke have a long poststroke life expectancy and therefore have the potential to experience impairments from their stroke for many years. However, there are relatively few studies characterizing these impairments and what factors facilitate or counteract recovery. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to characterize the main barriers to and facilitators of recovery from pediatric stroke. A secondary aim was to explore whether these factors last

Evaluation of the Relationship between Childhood Traumas and Adulthood Obesity Development.

This study aimed to delineate the relationship between childhood traumas and adulthood obesity. A total of 314 individuals (157 obese and 157 nonobese) were recruited in the study. After obtaining anthropometric and sociodemographic variables, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) was administered to the participants. Overall scores of CTQ were determined to be 42.6 ± 10.5 (higher trauma) in obese group and 37.2 ± 6.6 (lower trauma) in nonobese group (P < 0.001). Frequency rates of childhood traumatic experience were found to be 68.8% for obese people and 38.8% for nonobese people. In concl

What is the experience of men and women with congestive heart failure?

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is increasing in incidence and prevalence in both men and women in Canada. Research findings to date have been inconsistent with respect to whether gender differences influence quality of life, treatment and survival. There is a paucity of qualitative research describing the experience of patients with CHF This qualitative case study approach used semistructured interviews with women and men with New York Heart Association (NYHA) class three or four CHF who were referred to a CHF clinic. In addition to quality of life measures, data related to medical history, me

To what degree is palliative care integrated in guidelines and pathways for adult cancer patients in Europe: a systematic literature review.

BackgroundPalliative Care (PC) aims to improve the quality of life for patients with cancer and their families and its benefits have been demonstrated by several studies. The objective of this systematic review is to assess the integration of PC in the content of guidelines/pathways of adult cancer patients in Europe.MethodsWe included studies of adult patients with cancer published from 01/01/1995 and 31/12/2013 in Europe in six languages. We searched nine electronic databases, hand-searched six journals and also performed citation tracking. Studies were ranked using Emanuel's Integrated Pall

A qualitative examination of the needs of families faced with the option of organ donation.

Fewer than half of families approached about organ donation provide consent. Identifying specific support needs of family members in these situations is critical to help them cope and for improving consent rates. This focus group study retrospectively investigated donor and non-donor family members' perceived social support needs while facing the death of their loved one. Implications for nursing care and other interventions are discussed for interested healthcare providers.

Emotional reactions of parents after the birth of an infant with extremely low birth weight.

Emotional reactions of parents after the birth of an extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infant were followed during the early period of hospital care. Ten pairs of parents participated. The process concerning feelings of sadness, anger, fear/anxiety and joy was measured by Single Systems Design (SSD). The infants were born in gestation weeks 23-27. The emotional reactions of the mothers and fathers did not differ significantly. There was emotional confusion during the first weeks of parenthood, then the negative feelings decreased and joy increased. But at the end of a long period of care, the

Is a "palliative" patient always a palliative patient? Two case studies.

Review of the literature suggests that misdiagnosis of terminal illness is infrequent. In the first 6 months of the recently established Edmonton Regional Palliative Care Program, two of 330 referrals proved to be in the category of erroneous diagnosis of terminal disease. These two cases are reported, along with discussion of aspects of the time-honored usefulness of careful history and physical examination. This experience highlights the importance of assessment, investigation, and aggressive therapy, even in "terminal" patients, including those in the geriatric population.

Brief psychotherapy of bereavement reactions. The relationship of process to outcome.

We studied the relationship of dispositional and process variables with outcome in 52 bereaved patients given time-limited dynamic psychotherapy. Outcomes were generally favorable in symptom relief and improvement in relationship and occupational functioning. Patients' symptoms improved more than did their social and work functioning. Pretreatment levels of impairment or distress were significantly related to outcome, but most demographic and dispositional variables did not predict outcome. Process variables examined in relation to outcome--therapeutic alliance and actions by the therapist--we

Mortality risk following end-of-life caregiving: A population-based analysis of hospice users and their families.

Experiencing the death of a family member and providing end-of-life caregiving can be stressful on families - this is well-documented in both the caregiving and bereavement literatures. Adopting a linked-lived theoretical perspective, exposure to the death and dying of one family member could be conceptualized as a significant life stressor that produces short and long-term health consequences for surviving family members. This study uses familial-linked administrative records from the Utah Population Database to assess how variations in family hospice experiences affect mortality risk for sur

Anger in Adulthood in Participants Who Lost Their Father During the War in Croatia When They Were in Their Formative Age.

BACKGROUND: Loss of parents in early childhood can have serious long-term psychological consequences. Abandoned by a close figure of attachment, many persons have developed the emotion of anger, even though the separation was caused by death. The traumatic experience of the loss of a parent is particularly hard in war, because most often it does not occur as an individual trauma. Our aim is to research anger as a personality trait in persons whose father had died in war at a time when they were children, and to compare it with an appropriate civilian control group of subjects. SUBJECTS AND ME

Time and timelessness: inscription and representation.

Time is a real dimension of the physical universe and a subjective matter of mind. Depending on their relationship to Eros and the Death Instinct, our feelings about time and timelessness may serve disparate ends- positive or negative, constructive or destructive. The conflicts that emerge between time and timelessness will be affected by and drawn into our conflicts between the reality principle and the pleasure principle and by our capacity to acknowledge and bear the losses, hurts, and disappointments with which life presents us and the hopes and possibilities that life may hold. The "makin

Triage and care for women with symptoms or diagnosis of pregnancy loss between 14 + 0 and 21 + 6 weeks' gestation.

Mid-trimester pregnancy loss (MTL), defined as a pregnancy loss occurring between 14 + 0 and 21 + 6 weeks of gestation, causes significant physical and emotional distress to women and presents clinical challenges to healthcare professionals. It is acknowledged that in low-resource settings, this guideline might be applicable to births up to 28 weeks or babies weighing less than 1 kg. Risk factors for MTL include advanced maternal age, previous history of MTL, women of Black ethnicity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, and anatomical factors such as a short cervix, congenital ute

Support-Seeking After Market Withdrawal of a Purpose-Built AI Well-Being Tool (Ash): Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Purpose-built AI well-being tools-designed with clinical safeguards for everyday emotional difficulties such as stress, grief, and relationship conflict-represent a growing category of digital mental health support. When such tools are removed from the market, users must navigate alternatives on their own; however, no empirical data exist on where they actually turn. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to characterize real-world support-seeking after the withdrawal of a purpose-built AI well-being mobile app (Ash), specifically to (1) document where former users turned for emotional and mental he

Long-term morbidity of peripartum hysterectomy: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Surgical removal of the uterus during pregnancy or immediately post-partum is called peripartum hysterectomy. It can be pre-planned as an elective or performed as an emergency life-saving procedure for severe hemorrhage. Although rare, it is a catastrophic event leading to severe maternal morbidity and a prolonged recovery period. Besides the well-documented acute and subacute sequelae, perpartum hysterectomy may produce long-lasting physical, social, and psychological impacts. OBJECTIVES: Long-term complications of peripartum hysterectomy have barely been explored or recognized.

Quality indicators and patient outcome measures for palliative care in cancer patients: a systematic review.

IntroductionWith the exponential rise in global cancer incidence, the surge in demand for palliative care has outstripped capacity, limiting patients' access to quality and holistic palliative care, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Despite an upturn in research activity, evidence in palliative care remains limited, given its complexity as well as the shortage of standardised quality indicators (QIs) and patient outcome measures (POMs). The objective of this systematic review is to assess the QIs and POMs used to evaluate palliative care service on aggregated and individual level

The effectiveness of Hope Groups, a mental health, parenting support, and violence prevention program for families affected by the war in Ukraine: Findings from a pre-post study.

BACKGROUND: Nearly one in six children lived in war zones in 2023. Evidence-based psychosocial and parenting support has potential to mitigate negative impacts for parents and children co-exposed to war and displacement, especially in relation to mental health and harsh parenting reactions. In the current war in Ukraine, local mental health experts co-created and evaluated, with global experts, the effectiveness of psychosocial and parenting support groups, called 'Hope Groups' on improvements in mental health, positive parenting, and violence against children. This paper aimed to assess the e

The aftermath: aspects of recovery described by perpetrators of maternal filicide committed in the context of severe mental illness.

Mentally abnormal maternal filicide is a rare and horrifying event. Clinicians are unlikely to develop broad experience with this and there is little information available about recovery. This paper presents a range of descriptions of recovery experiences derived from a qualitative study of mentally abnormal maternal filicide perpetrators. Transcripts from a qualitative, semi-structured interview study of six women who committed filicide in the context of major mental illness were reviewed. Descriptions related to rehabilitation issues were grouped and themes extracted. The women described pat

Fulfilling end-of-life dreams: A scoping review of bucket lists in palliative and hospice care.

Abstract Objectives The purpose of this study is to examine the existing literature on end-of-life dream experiences and bucket list fulfillments among terminally ill individuals receiving hospice and/or palliative care. Methods A scoping review registered on Open Science Framework was conducted in accordance with the guidelines for Scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR). An electronic search of literature was generated from EBSCO databases published until June 2024. Studies were included if they described and evaluated the effects of bucket lists and/or end-of-life wish fulfillment. Results This review
