The impact of lobular carcinoma in situ in association with invasive breast cancer on the rate of local recurrence in patients with early-stage breast cancer treated with breast-conserving therapy.

PURPOSE: The significance of lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) associated with invasive breast cancer in patients undergoing breast-conserving therapy (BCT) remains controversial. We examined the impact of the presence and extent of LCIS associated with invasive breast cancer on clinical outcome in BCT patients. METHODS AND MATERIALS: From 1980 to 1996, 607 cases of invasive breast cancer were treated with BCT. All slides were reviewed by a single pathologist. Positive margin was defined as presence of invasive carcinoma/ductal carcinoma in situ at the inked margin. Multiple clinical, patholog

Arterial supply of limbic structures in the guinea pig.

This study outlines the vascular territories of the cerebral arteries that originate from the Willis circle to supply limbic structures in the guinea pig brain. The entire cerebral vascular system was visualized in four preliminary experiments by performing superselective microangiographic studies with iodine contrast medium perfusion of the whole brain after in vitro isolation according to a technique described previously (de Curtis et al. [1991] Hippocampus 1:341-354). Subsequently, the perfusion territory of the different arteries that originate from the Willis circle was characterized afte

Surgical therapy for localized prostatic carcinoma.

The intraoperative, immediate postoperative, and late postoperative morbidity and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in 511 consecutive patients with clinical T1b, T1c, and T2 tumors, who underwent anatomical radical retropubic prostatectomy, have been discussed. Between 1988 and 1995, prostatic cancer was diagnosed in 511 patients on the basis of PSA and prostate biopsy, when life expectancy was more than 10 years and frozen sections of obturator lymph nodes were negative. All specimens were cut into 3 mm sections by the step-section technique, after the surgical margin had been inked wit

Fiber Reinforced Cartilage ECM Functionalized Bioinks for Functional Cartilage Tissue Engineering.

Focal articular cartilage (AC) defects, if left untreated, can lead to debilitating diseases such as osteoarthritis. While several tissue engineering strategies have been developed to promote cartilage regeneration, it is still challenging to generate functional AC capable of sustaining high load-bearing environments. Here, a new class of cartilage extracellular matrix (cECM)-functionalized alginate bioink is developed for the bioprinting of cartilaginous tissues. The bioinks are 3D-printable, support mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) viability postprinting and robust chondrogenesis in vitro, with t

Effect of sterilization treatment on mechanical properties, biodegradation, bioactivity and printability of GelMA hydrogels.

Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel scaffolds and GelMA-based bioinks are widely used in tissue engineering and bioprinting due to their ability to support cellular functions and new tissue development. Unfortunately, while terminal sterilization of the GelMA is a critical step for translational tissue engineering applications, it can potentially cause thermal or chemical modifications of GelMA. Thus, understanding the effect of terminal sterilization on GelMA properties is an important, though often overlooked, aspect of material design for translational tissue engineering applications. To

Disperse-reactive dyes for sustainable waterless textile dyeing: current status, challenges, and future perspectives.

Disperse-Reactive (DR) dyes represent a promising class of hybrid colorants that combine the hydrophobic characteristics of disperse dyes with reactive functional groups, offering a potential solution for sustainable dyeing of polyester/cotton blends. This review critically evaluates the reported experimental validation and theoretical potential of DR dyes across five waterless or low-water coloration platforms: supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2), inkjet digital printing, solvent-assisted systems, reverse micelle methods, and ionic liquid/deep eutectic solvent (ILs/DES) systems. While SC-CO

Bioprinted cell-instructive lung-dECM constructs for reconstructing an immuno-regenerative pulmonary microenvironment.

Pulmonary tissue engineering requires scaffolds that combine parenchymal mechanical compliance with extracellular matrix-bound instructive cues, yet soft materials often lack print fidelity. Here, we developed decellularized lung matrix (dLM) bioinks using an osmotic decellularization strategy designed to preserve sulfated glycosaminoglycans (sGAGs) and basement membrane proteins and benchmarked them against conventionally detergent-processed dLM. Rather than inferring printability from bulk viscosity without shear history, we standardized extrusion conditions by defining flow windows through

Medium/low internal phase Pickering emulsion gels stabilized by biopolymer: Stability mechanism, material design, and application.

Pickering emulsion gels have garnered significant attention due to their advantageous properties, including good stability, surfactant-free nature, and gel-like characteristics. Most prior research has focused on high internal phase Pickering emulsions. In recent years, however, medium/low internal phase (internal phase volume fraction <74%) Pickering emulsion gel (M/LIPPEG) has emerged as a new focus, primarily driven by the need to reduce the use of fats and irritating internal-phase solvents in food and pharmaceutical applications. This review emphasizes the interfacial behavior and gelatio

Functional oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate copolymers enabling combined thermal and photocrosslinking for additive manufacturing of thermoresponsive soft biomaterials.

Thermogelling materials are attractive candidates for advanced biofabrication and 4D printing. However, achieving materials that combine reversible thermal responsiveness with sufficient mechanical stability and compatibility with multiple additive manufacturing techniques remains an important challenge. To address this limitation, we synthesized POEGMA-based diblock copolymers with pendant amine groups, capable of temperature-induced physical gelation with additional chemical crosslinking to produce structurally stable inks for advanced printing applications. The diblock copolymers (P(A(+)O)-

Bioorthogonal Click Chemistry Engineered Bioinks for 3D Bioprinting in Osteochondral Regeneration and Osteoarthritis Therapy: A Translational Review.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a rapidly growing joint disease worldwide, and its chronic and progressive form can cause damage to the cartilage and subchondral bone, resulting in physical and economic suffering for affected individuals. So far, potential therapeutic approaches, such as systematic drug administration and intraarticular injections, have been used to treat OA and regenerate osteochondral defects, but they are palliative rather than curative. Thus, hydrogels with biologics (matrix-degrading enzyme inhibitors) and small molecules (growth factors, anti-inflammatory molecules) show promisin

A Novel Mobile C-Arm Fluoroscopic Imaging of the Foramen Ovale and Its Anatomical Principles.

PURPOSE: Accurate localization of the foramen ovale (FO) is essential for percutaneous balloon compression, radiofrequency thermocoagulation, and glycerol injection in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. The mobile C-arm X-ray system is widely used due to its accessibility and low radiation exposure, but achieving optimal positioning to visualize the FO remains challenging. We propose a novel approach using facial surface landmarks to guide rapid and accurate C-arm positioning for FO fluoroscopy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were placed in the supine position, and three anatomical refere

Sex differences in the functional morphology of coronary arteries in embryonic mice.

Sex differences in the development and progression of cardiovascular disease manifest across multiple life stages. These differences are associated with variations in cardiovascular morphology and function between the sexes. Although estrogens and sex hormones are associated with sex differences in cardiovascular diseases in reproductive adults, the molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular sex differences during development are largely unknown. Thus, we investigated sex differences in cardiovascular development. We used a newly developed coronary arteriogram system to visualize the morphology of

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) Induced by ASIA Syndrome After the Aesthetic Medicine Procedures-A Case Report.

Introduction: The autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA) is a rare condition caused by an immune response associated with over-reactivity of the immune system, triggered by adjuvants. The most common adjuvants are aluminium salts but can also be bioimplants or infectious agents. It may lead to the development of various autoimmunologic diseases. Case Report: In the following article, we present the case of a 26-year-old woman who developed SLE likely induced by ASIA syndrome after the aesthetic medicine procedures. The patient was admitted because of arthralgia and fever.

Risk Factors for Positive Margins in Breast-Conserving Surgery.

Introduction Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) followed by adjuvant radiotherapy has similar overall survival compared to mastectomy but is associated with higher rates of local recurrence. Positive surgical margins in BCS are the most important predictor of local recurrence. The aim of our study was to assess the risk factors associated with positive margins in women undergoing BCS for breast cancer in order to inform our clinical practice and minimize re-operation rates. Methods Patients with a diagnosis of breast cancer who underwent BCS from January 2013 to January 2021 were identified from

Thermo-Responsive Methylcellulose Hydrogels: From Design to Applications as Smart Biomaterials.

Methylcellulose (MC) is an attractive material used to produce thermo-responsive hydrogels. They undergo sol-gel transition when a critical temperature is reached, thus modifying their properties (e.g., physicochemical and mechanical) in response to temperature changes. This behavior is particularly attractive when the body temperature acts as a trigger to modulate the thermo-responsive behavior of MC hydrogels. In this regard, exciting advances have been achieved in the field of cell and drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine, making MC a very attractive and versatile bi
