Effects of various countermeasures against the adverse effects of weightlessness on central circulation in the healthy man.

The effect of lower body negative pressure, local negative pressure below the knee joint, and both pneumatic and mechanical occlusion cuffs at the upper third of the femur on central circulation, oxidative metabolism, and acid-base equilibrium of blood was studied on eight healthy male volunteers with doublelumen Swan-Ganz flow-directed thermodilution catheters implanted for 7 d into the pulmonary artery. The counter-measures against the adverse effects of weightlessness were used in two regimens: regimen I at -30, -50, +40 torr and regimen II at -60, -100, and +60 torr. The parameters were re

Radiogenic changes in the behavior and physiology of the spontaneously hypertensive rat: evidence for a dissociation between acute hypotension and incapacitation.

Immediately following exposure to a sufficiently large dose of ionizing radiation, rats and several other species experience a transient period of acute hypotension and an accompanying deficit in performance. Although significant correlations have been reported between the drop in blood pressure and the early transient incapacitation (ETI) and a causal relationship has been suggested, the extent to which hypotension precipitates the occurrence of the behavioral deficits remains uncertain. The present experiments investigated both radiogenic blood pressure and performance changes in a strain of

A statistical examination of three approaches for predicting motion sickness incidence.

This paper examines three approaches which have been suggested for predicting motion sickness incidence (MSI) for actual or simulated broadband ship motion. Although only a small amount of empirical MSI data exists for motion other than that produced by a single sinusoid, this data provides strong statistical evidence that two approaches based on single sinusoid models fail to produce accurate predictions. Statistical judgments about a least-squares weighting approach must be reserved until enough data exists to provide an adequate test. In view of these results, it must be concluded that much

Conditioned feeding suppression in rats produced by cross-coupled and simple motions.

Conditioned feeding suppression was produced in rats by earth-vertical rotation, seesaw acceleration, and cross-coupled accelerations. Rats were exposed to 15 min of motion immediately after eating a sweet, novel food. The effects of this motion were assessed by measuring consumption of sweet food during a second feeding session that was 72 hr after exposure to motion Exposure to cross-coupled accelerations produced the greatest conditioned suppression of feeding. Progressively less suppression resulted from exposure to seesaw acceleration and to rotation. This ordering of suppression effects

Reducing motion sickness: a comparison of autogenic-feedback training and an alternative cognitive task.

Eighteen men were randomly assigned to three groups matched for susceptibility to Coriolis motion sickness. All subjects were given six Coriolis Sickness Susceptibility Index (CSSI) tests separated by 5-d intervals. Treatment Group I subjects were taught to control their own autonomic responses before the third, fourth, and fifth CSSI tests (6 h total training). Group II subjects were given "sham" training in an alternative cognitive task under conditions otherwise identical to those of Group I. Group III subjects received no treatment. Results showed that Group I subjects could withstand the

Motion sickness incidence induced by complex periodic waveforms.

Independent groups of up to 32 young men exposed in a standard seated posture to one of five conditions of vertical (Z axis) motion for up to 2 h. Exposure was less in the event of vomiting or a volunteer's voluntary withdrawal from the experiment. A control condition, sinusoidal motion of 0.17 Hz and 0.13 G R.M.S., provided the basis for comparison with the remaining four conditions, each produced by the sum of two sinusoids, the fundamental at 0.17 Hz plus the second or third harmonic. The conditions differed in the phase relationship of the fundamental and second harmonic, or in the relativ

Influence of a visual display and frequency of whole-body angular oscillation on incidence of motion sickness.

Visual search within a head-fixed display consisting of a 12 X 12 digit matrix is degraded by whole-body angular oscillation at 0.02 Hz (+/- 155 degrees/s peak velocity), and signs and symptoms of motion sickness are prominent in a number of individuals within a 5-min exposure. Exposure to 2.5 Hz (+/- 20 degrees/s peak velocity) produces equivalent degradation of the visual search task, but does not produce signs and symptoms of motion sickness within a 5-min exposure.

Antimotion-sickness efficacy of scopolamine 12 and 72 hours after transdermal administration.

The antimotion sickness remedy, transdermal therapeutic system-scopolamine, administered in this experiment was scheduled to deliver 1.0 mg of scopolamine over a period of 3 d, and this paper compares its efficacy 12 and 72 h after administration. In a double-blind study, six male college students were individually exposed to a standardized provocative test in a slow rotation room after six apparently identical treatments comprising four placebos and two medications. Efficacy was categorized as beneficial, inconsequential, or detrimental. None of the responses was detrimental. Following the fi

Cardiovascular origins of heatstroke pathophysiology: an anesthetized rat model.

Opinion is divided on issues concerning a cardiovascular origin of heatstroke pathophysiology as well as those concerning the mechanism of circulatory failure in heat. Such controversies seem to arise because of insufficient data covering the prodromal period of heatstroke. A reappraisal of the nature and sequence of early circulatory responses to heat stress was, consequently, undertaken by subjecting male albino rats to an environmental temperature of 45 degrees C at 15% relative humidity until overt circulatory failure occurred. Although the initial circulatory responses were normal for mil

The individual's vs. the organization's doctor: value conflict in psychiatric aeromedical evaluation.

Physicians who perform aeromedical evaluations are aware of the value conflicts inherent in being both a physician and a social agent. This paper examines some of the conflicts which occur when the psychiatrist acts as an aeromedical examiner. Five areas are examined: 1) the use by the psychiatrist of the authority delegated by the social system, 2) issues of confidentiality, 3) efforts of the social system to influence the psychiatrist's findings, 4) the requirements to make decisions in areas where scientific data is lacking, and 5) the physician's imperative to "do no harm" to his patient.

Cardiac decompression sickness: report and discussion of a case.

A case of first degree atrio-ventricular block, probably representing cardiac involvement by decompression sickness, is presented. The conduction defect resolved spontaneously 36 h after the initiating decompression insult, and was not accompanied by any other cardiovascular changes. The contribution of a recompression treatment, which alleviated accompanying Type I decompression sickness (DCS) symptoms, to the resolution of cardiac DCS is not certain. Cardiac symptoms of DCS do not receive enough consideration. It is suggested that an electrocardiogram should, whenever possible, form part of

Scopolamine alone or combined with ephedrine in seasickness: a double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

In seasickness, the central cholinergic-noradrenergic balance is disturbed. Capsules of identical appearance--containing scopolamine hydrobromide 0.3 mg, scopolamine hydrobromide 0.3 mg + ephedrine hydrochloride 25 mg, or placebo--were given prophylactically three times daily to 30 naval cadets during a crossing. In this randomized, double-blind trial the superiority of scopolamine and scopolamine + ephedrine over placebo was confirmed. Ephedrine did not clearly increase the effectiveness of scopolamine. One subject in the scopolamine group and one in the placebo group interrupted the treatmen

Biofeedback rehabilitation of airsick aircrew.

The biofeedback treatment of 20 aircrew, disabled by chronic severe airsickness, is reported. The USAF School of Aerospace Medicine (SAM) Airsick Rehabilitation Program requires careful selection to insure high motivation and thorough medical screening to rule out intercurrent medically disqualifying conditions. Patients are trained in relaxation techniques and placed in a modified Barany chair, capable of tilting as well as rotating. Psychological responses to motion stimulation are constantly monitored by both patient and investigators. Motion sickness is provoked, which the patient learns t

Variations in gravitoinertial force level affect the gain of the vestibulo-ocular reflex: implications for the etiology of space motion sickness.

Recordings of horizontal nystagmus were obtained on 16 male subjects exposed to repeated patterns of horizontal angular acceleration, constant velocity rotation, and sudden-stop deceleration in the laboratory and in the free-fall and high-force periods of parabolic flight. Nystagmus intensity was a clear function of gravitoinertial force level: slow phase velocity and beat frequency increased during exposure to high force levels and decreased in free-fall compared to values obtained at I G. These findings indicate that the gain of the vestibulo-ocular reflex decreases in free-fall. This fact l

Influence of the beta-blocking atenolol and other medications on visual reaction time.

Visual reaction time as a measure of vigilance and of the psychophysiological condition of subjects, was determined after combined physical and mental stress to examine the influence of beta blockade. Using the technique of electro-oculography, 40 subjects aged 25.7 +/- 6 years, with a mean blood pressure of 126/79 torr, were studied in a double-blind crossover design after application of placebo or 50 mg atenolol for 3 d. Visual reaction time was defined as the time between display of a peripheral light signal and the start of the eye movement that shifts the direction of gaze from the refere

Temporary heat intolerance in a heatstroke patient.

A case history of recurrent heatstroke is presented. The first heatstroke was incurred during strenuous exercise following acute gastroenteritis; the second heatstroke happened 1 month later during a march in hot climatic conditions. Two heat tolerance tests were performed. On the first, 1 month after the second incidence, an intolerance to heat was observed which, on the second test 5 months after the incidence, had disappeared. It is proposed that acute intercurrent illness and heatstroke in itself cause temporary susceptibility to exercise in heat, and that every heatstroke patient should b

Beta blockade and the effects of stress on the normal and ischaemic heart.

There is evidence that the beta blocking drugs are useful in angina pectoris, inhibiting the tachycardia of exercise and other forms of stress, such as emotion. In myocardial infarction, there is experimental evidence in animals and man for the effectiveness of these drugs in restoring the supply/demand balance of the ischaemic areas, and thus limiting infarct size. They may act partly by redistributing the coronary blood flow from areas of relatively good perfusion to those less well supplied. Cardiac pain is reduced in angina and also post-infarction. In contrast to the usual haemodynamic ef

Effects of sauna-like heat stress on the respiratory tract ciliogenesis and cilia in adult male rats.

Rats were exposed daily to +85 degrees C for 10 min for 60 d; half of them were exposed to -15 degrees C for 8.5 min each time immediately after heating. Rats were sacrified in groups at intervals of 20 d. Their respiratory cilia were studied with the electron microscope. In ciliogenesis, and increase was noted in the nunmber of fibrogranular areas and basal bodies deep in the cytoplasm. In the cilium the 9+2 pattern was reduced to 8+2; electron-dense material appeared at the ciliary base of other cilia. The last two changes were reversible. Only the trachea and main bronchus were affected. Th
