Praziquantel and liposomized glucan-treatment modulated liver fibrogenesis and mastocytosis in mice infected with Mesocestoides vogae (M. corti, Cestoda) tetrathyridia.

Beta-glucans are immunomodulators able to activate innate immunity and to potentiate acquired immune reactions. We investigated the impact of co-administration of liposomized beta-glucan on the larvicidal effect of the anthelmintic praziquantel (PZQ) in the livers and peritoneal cavities in mice infected with Mesocestoides vogae (M. corti). Also, within 2 weeks following therapy (up to day 29 p.i.) we examined collagen synthesis in the livers of mice by means of biochemical determination of hydroxyproline concentration, total mast cell counts and cell proliferative capacity using immunohistoch

"I will not accept to bury my pig": Taenia solium, WASH, and gender roles in the smallholder pork value chain in Southern Province, Rwanda.

Taenia solium is a zoonotic cestode and the causative agent of human taeniasis/cysticercosis and porcine cysticercosis. The burden in Rwanda is significant, including death and disability in people and income losses across the pork sector. Despite widespread recognition on the need for multi-sectoral and inclusive T. solium control programming, little is known about water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) access and gendered disease exposure among rural smallholders involved in the formal and informal pork sectors. This study aimed to characterize gender roles and WASH access in the Nyamagabe Dis

Human neurocysticercosis unexpectedly caused by Taenia martis in Italy: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Cysticercosis is caused by the larval stages of Taenia and Versteria species. While Taenia solium, associated with a domestic life cycle, is the primary etiological agent of human (neuro)cysticercosis worldwide, sporadic cases involving Taenia species linked to wildlife have also been reported. A 72‑year‑old immunocompetent woman presented in October 2024 to the Emergency Department with paresthesia, gait imbalance, and severe headache. Neuroimaging revealed a <1‑cm edematous lesion in the frontal cortex, suspicious for metastasis. Surgical removal was performed. Histopathological

Gastrointestinal Parasites of Zoonotic Importance Detected in Bats in the Conservation Area of Semuliki National Park, Western Uganda.

Bat guano may contain zoonotic parasites that contaminate the environment and/or serve as a potential source of infection to humans and animals. Repeated bat-human exposure could be a risk factor for zoonosis. To date, knowledge on the status of bat gastrointestinal parasites (GIPs) in Uganda is limited. We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate the prevalence of bat GIP species in communities contiguous to Semuliki National Park (SNP), Bundibugyo district in western Uganda. We purposively collected faecal samples of micro- (n = 242) and megabats (n = 242) from bat roosts in communit

Modulatory actions of Echinococcus granulosus antigen B on macrophage inflammatory activation.

Cestodes use own lipid-binding proteins to capture and transport hydrophobic ligands, including lipids that they cannot synthesise as fatty acids and cholesterol. In E. granulosus s.l., one of these lipoproteins is antigen B (EgAgB), codified by a multigenic and polymorphic family that gives rise to five gene products (EgAgB8/1-5 subunits) assembled as a 230 kDa macromolecule. EgAgB has a diagnostic value for cystic echinococcosis, but its putative role in the immunobiology of this infection is still poorly understood. Accumulating research suggests that EgAgB has immunomodulatory properties,

Drivers of Echinococcus multilocularis transmission in China: small mammal diversity, landscape or climate?

BACKGROUND: Human alveolar echinococcocosis (AE) is a highly pathogenic zoonotic disease caused by the larval stage of the cestode E. multilocularis. Its life-cycle includes more than 40 species of small mammal intermediate hosts. Therefore, host biodiversity losses could be expected to alter transmission. Climate may also have possible impacts on E. multilocularis egg survival. We examined the distribution of human AE across two spatial scales, (i) for continental China and (ii) over the eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau. We tested the hypotheses that human disease distribution can be expla

Development of microsatellite markers in Caryophyllaeus laticeps (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), monozoic fish tapeworm, using next-generation sequencing approach.

Caryophyllaeus laticeps (Pallas 1781) (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea) is a monozoic tapeworm of cyprinid fishes with a distribution area that includes Europe, most of the Palaearctic Asia and northern Africa. Broad geographic distribution, wide range of definitive fish hosts and recently revealed high morphological plasticity of the parasite, which is not in an agreement with molecular findings, make this species to be an interesting model for population biology studies. Microsatellites (short tandem repeat (STR) markers), as predominant markers for population genetics, were designed for C. laticeps

Description and molecular differentiation of a new Staphylocystoides (Cyclophyllidea: Hymenolepididae) from the dusky shrew Sorex monticolus in Southeast Alaska.

Staphylocystoides gulyaevi n. sp. is described based on specimens obtained from the dusky shrew Sorex monticolus collected on Sukkwan Island, southeast Alaska. Staphylocystoides gulyaevi n. sp. is compared with other North American members of the genus having 10 rostellar hooks. The new species is morphologically similar to Staphylocystoides parvissima and Staphylocystoides asketus. The uterus in S. gulyaevi n. sp. develops much more rapidly, and a well-developed uterus appears abruptly after it is barely visible in a previous proglottid. In S. parvissima the uterus grows gradually, and its ea

MicroRNA-Transcription factor regulatory networks in the early strobilar development of Echinococcus granulosus protoscoleces.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato has a complex developmental biology with a variety of factors relating to both intermediate and final hosts. To achieve maximum parasite adaptability, the development of the cestode is dependent on essential changes in transcript regulation. Transcription factors (TFs) and miRNAs are known as master regulators that affect the expression of downstream genes through a wide range of metabolic and signaling pathways. In this study, we aimed to develop a regulatory miRNA-Transcription factor (miRNA-TF) network across early developmental stages of E. gr

Natural history of Echinococcus granulosus microcyst development in long term in vitro culture and molecular and morphological changes induced by insulin and BMP-4.

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) caused by the cestode Echinococcus granulosus is a disease of worldwide public health and economic importance. The determinants and underlying cellular mechanisms of CE development and fate in intermediate hosts are largely unknown. Hormones and cytokines such as insulin and BMP-4 are the key players in the development, differentiation, and apoptosis. In this study, we evaluated the long term natural history of E. granulosus microcysts in an vitro setting and the molecular and morphological changes induced by the growth factors, insulin and BMP4 during

Findings of a community screening programme for human cystic echinococcosis in a non-endemic area.

Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonosis caused by infection with the larval stages of the taeniid cestodes of the species complex Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. It is prevalent among transhumant communities in East Africa, including those residing in northern Kenya. The movement of livestock from these regions of high incidence to areas of low incidence creates an indirect risk of disease spill-over to humans. To assess possible establishment of the CE life cycle outside known endemic regions, we used a portable ultrasound scanner to screen for the presence of human CE in Bungoma County

Extracellular non-coding RNA signatures of the metacestode stage of Echinococcus multilocularis.

Extracellular RNAs (ex-RNAs) are secreted by cells through different means that may involve association with proteins, lipoproteins or extracellular vesicles (EV). In the context of parasitism, ex-RNAs represent new and exciting communication intermediaries with promising potential as novel biomarkers. In the last years, it was shown that helminth parasites secrete ex-RNAs, however, most work mainly focused on RNA secretion mediated by EV. Ex-RNA study is of special interest in those helminth infections that still lack biomarkers for early and/or follow-up diagnosis, such as echinococcosis, a

Taenia taeniaeformis (Cestoda) in the rat: ultrastructure of the host-parasite interface on days 1 to 7 postinfection.

Ultrastructural observation were made on the host-parasite interface from 1 to 7 days postinfection (DPI) with Taenia taeniaeformis in the rat. Over this period the organism developed from a multicellular oncospheral mass, equivalent in size to a host hepatocyte, into a fluid-filled, grossly visible vesicle, the walls of which showed the arrangement of syncytial tegument, cytoplasmic bridges and subtegumental cell bodies typical of older cestodes. Microvilli, often branched, extended from the free, tegumental surface of the parasite from 1 DPI onwards. Fragments of the microvilli were pinched
