Multimodal quantification of cognitive load using a printed wearable facial bio-potential system.

Objective.Cognitive load refers to the amount of mental effort required to process information and perform tasks. It has a strong impact on both learning and task performance and, therefore, plays a central role in cognitive neuroscience, psychology, neurology, human-machine interaction, and education research. Despite its significance, measuring cognitive load is challenging due to its complex and dynamic nature, influenced by task complexity, individual differences, and emotional states. While standard methods are based on subjective self-reports, numerous objective methods have been explore

Immunohistochemical Characterization of JAK Family Expression in the Primary Inflammatory Infiltrate of Lichen Planopilaris and Folliculitis Decalvans, With an Exploratory Clinical Assessment of Oral JAK Inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Lichen planopilaris (LPP) and folliculitis decalvans (FD) are two of the most common types of primary scarring alopecia. Several Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKis) have been used effectively in their treatment. We conducted an immunohistochemical (IHC) study to evaluate whether any member of the JAK family was overexpressed in the primary inflammatory infiltrate of FD and LPP. Additionally, we performed an exploratory retrospective study on the efficacy and safety of oral JAKis in LPP. METHODS: Pathology scalp samples from seven healthy controls and 28 patients with LPP or FD were se

Cutis tricolor: a literature review and report of five new cases.

BACKGROUND: Cutis tricolor is a skin abnormality consisting in a combination of congenital hyper- and hypopigmented skin lesions (in the form of paired macules, patches or streaks) in close proximity to each other in a background of normal skin. It is currently regarded as a twin-spotting (mosaic) phenomenon and today is clear that not all cases of cutis tricolor represent one single entity. This phenomenon has been reported so far either: (I) as an purely cutaneous trait; (II) as a part of a complex malformation phenotype (Ruggieri-Happle syndrome, RHS) including distinct facial features, eye

The etiology of osteosarcoma.

Studies to determine the etiology of osteosarcoma involve epidemiologic and environmental factors and genetic impairments. Factors related to patient characteristics include age, gender, ethnicity, growth and height, genetic and familial factors, and preexisting bone abnormalities. Rapidly proliferating cells may be particularly susceptible to oncogenic agents and mitotic errors which lead to neoplastic transformation. Genetic aberrations that accompany osteosarcoma have received increasing recognition as an important factor in its etiology. Osteosarcoma tumor cells exhibit karyotypes with a h

Minimally invasive periorbital rejuvenation.

Minimally invasive procedures have become increasingly popular over the last decade. In many cases, the use of neuromodulators and fillers has replaced surgical procedures. This article reviews the analysis and evaluation of the aesthetic patient presenting for periorbital rejuvenation. A layered approach is used, evaluating the skin, fat, muscle, and bone to determine which procedure is best suited for each patient. Volume enhancement with the use of fat and fillers and muscle manipulation with the use of neuromodulators are discussed. A brief summary of currently available skin-resurfacing t

Bone mineral density in patients with alopecia areata treated with long-term intralesional corticosteroids.

BACKGROUND: Intralesional corticosteroid injections are a common treatment for patchy alopecia areata, the most prevalent subtype of this autoimmune hair disorder. To date, no studies have examined the potential adverse effects of this therapy on bone mineral density (BMD). METHODS: In this retrospective, cross-sectional case series, 18 patients with patchy alopecia areata treated at 4- to 8-week intervals with intralesional triamcinolone acetonide for at least 20 months were evaluated for BMD using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Follow-up DXA measurements were obtained in those with

Facial determinants of female gender and feminizing forehead cranioplasty.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Information determined by viewing a face includes familiarity, emotion, attractiveness, and gender. However, the specific facial characteristics that enable one to identify gender are largely unknown. Research suggests that femininity is a critical component of beauty; however, the most important identifiers of a woman's face are unknown. The objectives of this article were: 1) determine the area of the face most significant in identifying female gender, 2) determine if individuals with gender-confirming surgery of the face are identified as male or female, 3) review the

Late-onset Rothmund-Thomson syndrome.

A 43-year-old woman presented with complaints of exfoliation of the skin and mottled pigmentation all over the body, intolerance to sunlight for the last 14 years, and swelling on the lower one-third of the neck for 15 years. She was apparently well until the age of 29 years when she noticed redness on her shins which later progressed to involve the upper limbs, chest, and face. Three months later, she observed multiple, small, brownish plaques over the erythematous areas, which gradually spread to the sun-exposed areas, namely the face, forearms, hands, and nape of the neck. The erythema disa

Permanent hair loss associated with taxane chemotherapy use in breast cancer: A retrospective survey at two tertiary UK cancer centres.

PURPOSE: Taxane chemotherapy is commonly used in the management of breast cancer. Hair loss (alopecia) is an expected side effect which may have a significant effect on quality of life. Alopecia is normally temporary but permanent chemotherapy-induced alopecia (pCIA) is increasingly recognised especially following docetaxel chemotherapy. However, the prevalence following docetaxel is not well understood and there is no published literature for paclitaxel chemotherapy. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence and patterns of pCIA resulting from both docetaxel and paclitaxel chemot

Chimeric Antigen Receptor-T Cell Mediated Bilateral Facial Nerve Palsy: A Case Report.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR-T) cell therapy is highly effective against hematological cancers but is associated with immune mediated side effects, including neurotoxicity. The most commonly described presentations of immune cell mediated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) include cortical symptoms and generally localize to the central nervous system. In this report, we present a patient with acute onset of bilateral facial nerve palsy following CAR-T cell therapy, followed by a complete clinical recovery. Aside from a temporary anisocoria, he had no other neurologic symptoms and no encephalopat
