Common mental disorders and HIV status in the context of DREAMS among adolescent girls and young women in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: HIV affects many adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in South Africa. Given the bi-directional HIV and mental health relationship, mental health services may help prevent and treat HIV in this population. We therefore examined the association between common mental disorders (CMD) and HIV-related behaviours and service utilisation, in the context of implementation of the combination DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored and Safe) HIV prevention programme in rural uMkhanyakude district, KwaZulu-Natal. DREAMS involved delivering a package of multiple interv

Homosexuality according to ancient Greek physicians.

Homosexuality and pedophilia in ancient Greece greatly concerned many researchers who were mainly interested in highlighting the social aspect of this phenomenon in ancient Greek society. An important source on the subject was the paintings of a man and his lover in attic black and red figured pottery, up to the end of the 5th century BC. Another main source was the information that derived from the texts of ancient Greek literature, especially poetry. Homosexuality was not only referring to relationships between males, but it was also manifested in lesbian love. It is believed that in the Hom

Navigating patient death and grief in German neurosurgical residency: a mixed-methods study.

OBJECTIVE: Neurosurgical residents encounter patient death during their training, yet the literature lacks understanding of their experiences and responses. The aim of this study was to explore how residents navigate patient death, communicate with families, and engage with coping and support mechanisms during their neurosurgical training in Germany. METHODS: The authors conducted a qualitative-dominant mixed-methods study among neurosurgical residents in Germany. The qualitative component included semistructured in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with neurosurgical residents. Th

Experiences of Identity-Related Vigilance in Surgical Trainees: A Qualitative Study.

IMPORTANCE: Experiences with identity-related mistreatment are a critical concern in surgical residency training. Prior research demonstrates those who experience identity-related mistreatment or scrutiny can experience subsequent vigilance for additional encounters with associated stress. It is unknown whether surgical trainees who experience identity-related mistreatment or scrutiny also experience identity-related vigilance. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether identity-related vigilance impacts surgical trainees in the learning environment. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This qualitative

Strengths, Challenges, and Experiences of Neurodivergent Faculty in Academia.

Recently, there has been increasing attention to neurodiversity in academia, with focus on supporting neurodivergent (ND) students. The experiences of ND faculty, however, are often overlooked in neurodiversity research, leading to a lack of support. In this study, we quantitatively and qualitatively surveyed self-identified ND faculty (n = 66) about their experiences in academia to learn more about their perceived strengths and weaknesses, coping strategies, and advice for other ND academics and neurotypical (NT) peers. Overall, 93.3%, 73.3%, 27.1% of our participants met or exceeded clinical

Latent profiles and characteristic networks of second victim experiences among junior nurses: a latent profile analysis and association rule mining study.

BACKGROUND: Junior nurses (clinical experience ≤ 5 years) are prone to increased second victim distress after adverse events, yet the heterogeneity within this population remains poorly understood. This study used a novel combination of latent profile analysis (LPA) and association rule mining (ARM) to identify distinct second victim profiles, investigate factors associated with profile membership, and design corresponding care-bundle prototypes. METHODS: A cross-sectional, STROBE-compliant survey of 387 junior nurses with ≥ 1 self-reported adverse event in the previous 12 months was conducte

Multimodal generative AI for pre-practicum mental health support competency development: a human-supervised framework for education-childcare partnerships.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and multimodal interaction are attracting growing attention in mental health-related education and care. At the same time, pre-service childcare professionals are increasingly expected to observe and respond sensitively to infants' and toddlers' emotional signals, attachment needs, separation reactions, and interaction patterns. These contextual and ethically sensitive capacities require more than lectures or procedural training. Authentic practicum remains indispensable, but safeguarding, consent, privacy, placement availability, supervisory capacity

A study on the clinical effectiveness of a tiered management model for type 2 diabetes based on a three-level linkage mechanism in the context of residency training: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: With the widespread implementation of General Practice Residency Training (GPRT) in China, primary care institutions have enhanced chronic disease management capabilities. However, research on tiered management for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), particularly systematic exploration based on a three-tier collaborative model (primary-secondary-tertiary institutions), remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a three-tiered linkage hierarchical management model for T2DM implemented within the GPRT framework. METHODS: This study enrolled 120 T2DM patients

Factors associated with the initiation of daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis among adolescent girls and young women: findings from the Namibia DREAMS program.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 15-24 years in sub-Saharan Africa continue to face a significant risk of HIV acquisition. Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) can reduce the likelihood of HIV acquisition by more than 90% when adherence is optimal. The Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-Free, Mentored, and Safe (DREAMS) program, funded by PEPFAR/USAID and implemented by the Project HOPE Namibia (PHN)-led consortium, provided services in the Khomas, Oshikoto, Zambezi, and Oshana regions. The DREAMS program addresses factors that increase HIV vulnerability among AGYW.

Impact of the DREAMS Partnership on social support and general self-efficacy among adolescent girls and young women: causal analysis of population-based cohorts in Kenya and South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: The Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored and Safe (DREAMS) Partnership aimed to influence psychosocial processes that promote empowerment among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), and reduce HIV incidence. We estimated the impact of DREAMS on aspects of AGYW's collective and individual agency (specifically, social support and self-efficacy), in three settings where DREAMS was implemented from 2016 until at least end 2018. METHODS: Research cohorts of ~1500 AGYW aged 13-22 were randomly selected from demographic platforms in Kenya (Nairobi; Gem) and South Af

Exploring the mechanism through which a child-friendly storybook addresses barriers to child-participation during HIV care in primary healthcare settings in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers (HCWs) in South Africa widely use job-aids as practical tools to enhance the provision of HIV services, thereby improving patient-provider interactions during the care process. Job-aids are visual support materials that provide appropriate information using graphics and words in a simple and yet effective manner. We explored the mechanism through the KidzAlive Talk tool storybook (Talk tool), a child-centred job-aid for HCWs that facilitates child-participation during HIV consultations in primary healthcare (PHC) clinics implementing the KidzAlive model. METHODS

Reducing overdose after release from incarceration (ROAR): study protocol for an intervention to reduce risk of fatal and non-fatal opioid overdose among women after release from prison.

BACKGROUND: Drug overdose is the leading cause of death after release from prison, and this risk is significantly higher among women compared to men. Within the first 2 weeks after release, the risk of death from drug overdose is 12.7 times higher than the general population, with risk of death further elevated among females. Although female inmates have higher rates of opioid use disorder and post-release overdose fatality, justice-involved women are under-represented in studies of medications for opioid use disorder. The Reducing Overdose After Release from Incarceration (ROAR) pilot interve

Stricter national standards are required for credentialing of endoscopic-retrograde-cholangiopancreatography in the United States.

Endoscopic-retrograde-cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is now a vital modality with primarily therapeutic and occasionally solely diagnostic utility for numerous biliary/pancreatic disorders. It has a significantly steeper learning curve than that for other standard gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopies, such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy or colonoscopy, due to greater technical difficulty and higher risk of complications. Yet, GI fellows have limited exposure to ERCP during standard-three-year-GI-fellowships because ERCP is much less frequently performed than esophagogastroduodenoscopy/colonoscopy
