Comparison of suppression, stereoacuity, and interocular differences in visual acuity in monovision and acuvue bifocal contact lenses.

PURPOSE: The relationship between visual acuity and stereoacuity has been well documented: as binocular visual acuity increases, stereoacuity improves. We compared interocular differences in visual acuity and stereoacuity in two presbyopic soft contact lens modalities, monovision and a new soft bifocal contact lens, the Acuvue Bifocal. The Acuvue Bifocal is hypothesized to show a smaller interocular acuity difference, increased stereoacuity, and decreased suppression over monovision at distance and near. METHODS: Monovision patients wearing Acuvue or Surevue soft contact lenses were tested fo

Cornea-contact lens interaction in the aquatic environment.

PURPOSE: A large population of ametropic scuba divers wear contact lenses. We discuss optics and corneal physiology, as well as the types of contact lenses that are appropriate for underwater activities. METHODS: We reviewed an extensive body of literature to formulate guidelines to aid the contact lens fitter in satisfying individual sport diver's needs. RESULTS: Optical factors such as image displacement and light wave-length shifts require that contact lenses for underwater use be suitably modified. Underwater images appear nearer and larger (requiring greater accommodation) and are made

Lens optical quality is a direct function of lens sutural architecture.

We analyzed the structural and functional relationship between lens sutures and lens optical quality (focal length variability) by correlative scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser scan analysis. Twenty-two rabbit lenses (8 pigmented and 14 albino) were used in this study. Lenses were initially scanned by a low-power helium-neon laser beam that was passed either at an acute angle to a lens suture or along a lens suture. The results of laser scan analysis with the incident beam passed at an acute angle to a lens suture showed that generally, rabbit lenses were well corrected for spherica

One-piece extended depth of focus intraocular lens implantation in the capsular bag in the presence of a posterior capsule rupture.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Posterior capsule rupture has historically prevented implantation of one-piece intraocular lenses in the bag. We present a case of extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens insertion into the capsular bag after posterior capsule rupture with an excellent post-operative outcome. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 64-year-old female presenting for bilateral refractive exchange to reduce dependence on spectacles. The patient had hypermetropic presbyopia, with no other previous ophthalmic history. She had a non-significant cataract in both eyes. Pre-operative

Treatment of Pterygium on the Refractive Errors: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Pterygium is a chronic, degenerative condition of unknown cause, and its development can lead to significant refractive errors due to localized flattening of the cornea near the central area of the leading edge. However, to date, the impact of pterygium and its surgical removal on refractive errors has not been thoroughly compiled in a comprehensive study. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effect of pterygium surgery on refractive errors and to examine the relationship between the size of the pterygium and its effect on refractive errors both before and after pterygium surge

Effect of Contact Lens Design on Objective Visual Acuity-Based Parameters in Pre-Presbyopic Patients in Photopic and Mesopic Lighting Conditions.

Presbyopia is often corrected by progressive soft contact lenses (CL), and the resulting visual acuity-based parameters can be affected by the lens design and pupil size under different lighting conditions. In this study, we examined the effect of CL design (spheric vs. aspheric) on objective parameters of visual acuity-based parameters under mesopic vs. photopic lighting conditions. In a prospective, double-blind study, pre-presbyopic and presbyopic patients were fitted with spheric (Dispo Silk; 8.6 base curve, 14.2 diameter) and aspheric (Dispo Aspheric; 8.4 base curve, 14.4 diameter) CLs.
