Psychiatric conditions associated with prenatal alcohol exposure.

Since the identification of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) over 35 years ago, mounting evidence about the impact of maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy has prompted increased attention to the link between prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and a constellation of developmental disabilities that are characterized by physical, cognitive, and behavioral impairments. These disabilities include a continuum of developmental disorders known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Longitudinal studies suggest that individuals with FASDs are at a greatly increased risk for adverse long-term ou

[Antidepressant-resistant depression and the bipolar spectrum -- diagnostic and therapeutic considerations].

According to the results of epidemiological studies mood disorders with unipolar (major and minor depressive disorder; dysthymia) or bipolar features are among the most prevalent psychiatric disorders. These disorders with their frequent comorbidities (alcohol and/or drug use disorders, smoking, suicide, cardiovascular disorders) pose great public health challenge and cause substantial individual and familar burdens as well. Since SSRIs and other new antidepressant agents entered the market the possibilities to treat depression improved substantially but 25-35 percent of major depressives do n

Purification and characterization of a new weak hemorrhagic metalloproteinase BmHF-1 from Bothrops marajoensis snake venom.

BmHF-1, from the venom of Bothrops marajoensis, was purified by Sephadex G-75 and HPLC-RP on micro-Bondapak C-18 column chromatography. It presented a molecular mass of 27162.36 Da determined by MALDI-TOF MS. BmHF-1 had a sequence of 238 residues of amino acids. The multiple alignment of its amino acid sequence and those of other snake venom metalloproteinases showed high structural similarity, mainly among P-I class. The enzyme initially cleaves the Aalpha-chain of fibrinogen, followed by the Bbeta-chain, and shows no effects on the gamma-chain. BmHF-1 had, caseinolytic and weakly hemorrhagic

Fetal Origins of Mental Health: The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease Hypothesis.

The quality of fetal growth and development predicts the risk for a range of noncommunicable, chronic illnesses. These observations form the basis of the "developmental origins of health and disease" hypothesis, which suggests that the intrauterine signals that compromise fetal growth also act to "program" tissue differentiation in a manner that predisposes to later illness. Fetal growth also predicts the risk for later psychopathology. These findings parallel studies showing that antenatal maternal emotional well-being likewise predicts the risk for later psychopathology. Taken together, thes

Longitudinal trajectories of marijuana use from adolescence to young adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Marijuana use is increasingly widespread among adolescents and young adults; however, few studies have examined longitudinal trajectories of marijuana use during this important developmental period. As such, we examined adolescent trajectories of marijuana use and the psychosocial factors that may differentiate individuals who escalate their marijuana use over adolescence and young adulthood from those who do not. METHODS: Participants were 1204 9th and 10th graders at baseline who were over-sampled for cigarette use and were followed over 6-years, as part of an extensive longitud

Person-environment transactions: personality traits moderate and mediate the effects of child sexual victimization on psychopathology.

Personality, environmental adversity and psychopathology are related, and different models have been proposed to explain their interaction. The theory of person-environment transactions may elucidate the role of personality in these interactions beyond traditional conceptualizations. To our knowledge, hardly any studies have explored the relationships between the Five Factor Model, child sexual victimization and general psychopathology. We hypothesized (1) that neuroticism and conscientiousness will moderate the effect of sexual victimization on psychopathology and (2) that neuroticism will me

Depressive personality disorder, dysthymia, and their relationship to perfectionism.

This paper reports the results of two studies in a nonclinical (n=105) and primary care outpatient sample (n=110), in which Depressive Personality Disorder (DPD), Dysthymia, and depression were assessed for their distinctive relationship with perfectionism. Results from both studies found that self-reported DPD, Dysthymia, and depressive symptoms were all intercorrelated, and that DPD, Dysthymia, and depressive symptoms were correlated with three dimensions of perfectionism-Concern over Mistakes, Doubts about Actions, and Parental Criticism. In the nonclinical sample, variance in measures of D

Are hypomanics the happier normals?

BACKGROUND: Not much is known about hypomanic states in subjects free of major and minor depressive mood disorders. Our aim was to identify and characterise a group of such "pure" hypomanics in relation to a normal control group. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Swiss Zurich study, a stratified epidemiological sample of young adults from the general population, followed from age 20 to 40. "Pure" hypomania was defined as a period of increased activity and decreased need for sleep with consequences (e.g. legal trouble or reactions by others). Minor and major mood disorders were excluded. R

Effects of stocking density on growth, physiological, and puberty responses of replacement beef heifers reared in drylots.

This experiment evaluated growth, physiological responses, and puberty attainment in heifers reared in drylots with different stocking densities. A total of 240 heifers (75% Angus × 25% Brahman) were used. Heifers were ranked by age (270 ± 1 d), body weight (BW on day -3; 232 ± 2 kg) and temperament score on day 0, and assigned to drylot pens with: 1) 14 m2/heifer (HDENS), 2) 28 m2/heifer (MDENS), 3) 42 m2/heifer (LDENS), or to pastures with 1380 m2/heifer (CON). Each pen or pasture (n = 6/treatment) housed 10 heifers. Negligible forage was available for CON, and all treatments received the sa

Different Pathways of Externalising Behaviour Problems From Preschool to Youth: A Test of Risk and Protective Factors and Potential Origins.

BACKGROUND: This article is dedicated to David Farrington who was a giant in criminology and, in particular, a pioneer in studying developmental pathways of delinquent and antisocial behaviour. Numerous studies followed his work. Systematic reviews of his and others' research described between two and seven (mainly 3-5) trajectories. The variation is due to the age of individuals, kind and seriousness of problem behaviour, data sources, assessment methods and cultural context. Reviews stated a lack of research on very early starting problem behaviour, broad developmental outcomes, data from mu

Progression of Transdiagnostic Stages From Childhood to Young Adulthood.

IMPORTANCE: Transdiagnostic clinical staging models for mental disorders are receiving increased attention. However, their underlying assumptions are underresearched; for example, it is not clear whether the observed progression across stages occurs independently of preexisting risk factors. OBJECTIVES: To test the likelihood of progression from stage 0 (familial risk) in childhood to stage 1a (mild symptoms) in adolescence and subsequently to stage 1b (clinically significant symptoms) in young adulthood, accounting for confounders, and to explore potential mediators. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PA

Effect of the thinking healthy programme-based internet intervention model for maternal perinatal depression: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Thinking Healthy Programme (THP) is an evidence-based psychosocial intervention that can be delivered by non-psychologists and does not require the implementer to have a mental health background or field experience. The THP has been tested in maternal health in many countries. However, the application of the THP model in Chinese maternal and child health has not been reported. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the feasibility of the Thinking Healthy Programme (THP) model for improving perinatal depressive symptoms and infant growth when implemented by non-psychologists (e.g.,

Testing whether multi-level factors protect poly-victimised children against psychopathology in early adulthood: a longitudinal cohort study.

AIMS: Exposure to multiple forms of victimisation in childhood (often referred to as poly-victimisation) has lifelong adverse effects, including an elevated risk of early-adulthood psychopathology. However, not all poly-victimised children develop mental health difficulties and identifying what protects them could inform preventive interventions. The present study investigated whether individual-, family- and/or community-level factors were associated with lower levels of general psychopathology at age 18, among children exposed to poly-victimisation. Additionally, it examined whether these fa

Early risk factors and developmental pathways to chronic high inhibition and social anxiety disorder in adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that chronic high levels of behavioral inhibition are a precursor of social anxiety disorder. The authors sought to identify early risk factors for, and developmental pathways to, chronic high inhibition among school-age children and the association of chronic high inhibition with social anxiety disorder by adolescence. METHOD: A community sample of 238 children was followed from birth to grade 9. Mothers, teachers, and children reported on the children's behavioral inhibition from grades 1 to 9. Lifetime history of psychiatric disorders was available for the subs

Affective lability and affect intensity as core dimensions of bipolar disorders during euthymic period.

Bipolar disorders are usually defined by alternative mood states, but a more precise characterization of the euthymic period could provide further insights into the pathophysiology of bipolar disorders. Surprisingly, few studies have investigated core affective dimensions in euthymic bipolar patients. In this study, we assessed 179 euthymic bipolar patients (score<12 on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Scale and a score<6 on the Bech-Rafaelsen Mania Scale) compared with 86 control subjects using French versions of the Affective Lability Scale (ALS) and the Affect Intensity Measure (AIM). G.T. MSRS On-Line Calculator Targeting the Early Diagnosis of Mixed Affective States: the Multicenter Study Project Design on the Approbation and Validity of the Three Language Versions of the Rating Scale.

BACKGROUND: Mixed affective states (MS) are often misdiagnosed by the clinicians and lead to the inappropriate treatment strategies contributing to the severe forms, poor outcome with higher rates of comorbid conditions and worse remission quality in affective and bipolar disorders, as well as to a decreased psychosocial functioning of these patients. The development of reliable tools for the MS assessments or so called the phenomenon of mixity in affective disorders, is still an unmet need of psychiatric research and clinical practice. In this paper, we present PC program "Multilingual IBM-PC

Opium Effect in Pregnancy on the Dynamics of Maternal Behavior: Testing a Neurochemical Model.

BACKGROUND: Investigations into neurochemical mechanisms of opioid addiction are difficult due to the complexity of behavior and multiplicity of involved neurotransmitter and hormonal systems. The aim of this study was to examine the benefits of structured analysis of these mechanisms using the framework of the neurochemical model Functional Ensemble of Temperament (FET) and the example of maternal behavior under the condition of opium consumption in pregnancy. The FET differentiates between (a) endurance, (b) speed of integration, and (c) emotionality aspects of behavior suggesting that these

[Frequency and clinical aspects of bipolar II disorder in a French multicenter study: EPIDEP].

This paper presents the definite data from a French multi-center study (EPIDEP). The aim of EPIDEP was to show the feasibility of validating the spectrum of soft bipolar disorders by practicing clinicians. In this report we focus on data concerning the frequency of BP-II disorder and the key characteristics of BP-II by systematic comparison versus Unipolar depression. EPIDEP involved training 48 french psychiatrists in 15 sites; it is based on a common protocol following the DSM IV criteria (Semi-Structured Interview for Hypomania and Major Depression), and Akiskal (Soft Bipolarity), as well a

Co-occurring Epilepsy and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in a 6-Year-Old Boy.

"Andrew" is a 6-year-old, right-handed, cisgender boy who presents for neuropsychological testing to determine whether he meets criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Andrew's parents report that he is easily distracted, has poor concentration, and is unable to sustain attention for discrete periods of time. Andrew is the product of an uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery, and there were no reported concerns in the postnatal period. Andrew met all of his language and motor milestones on time. He was described as having an "easy" temperament in his infancy and toddler yea

(160) SCHEMA THERAPY: NOVEL THERAPEUTIC PROSPECTS FOR COMPULSIVE SEXUAL BEHAVIOR DISORDER

Abstract Introduction The World Health Organization included compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) in the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11). This condition is characterized by the failure to control sexual impulses, often involving intense, repetitive behavior. The diagnostic guidelines of the ICD-11 include sexual activity as the central component of the life of the affected individual, with the neglect of other aspects of life, failure to interrupt repetitive sexual behavior and the maintenance of sexual behaviors despite negative consequences for the
