Theories of addiction: methamphetamine users' explanations for continuing drug use and relapse.

A variety of preclinical models have been constructed to emphasize unique aspects of addiction-like behavior. These include Negative Reinforcement ("Pain Avoidance"), Positive Reinforcement ("Pleasure Seeking"), Incentive Salience ("Craving"), Stimulus Response Learning ("Habits"), and Inhibitory Control Dysfunction ("Impulsivity"). We used a survey to better understand why methamphetamine-dependent research volunteers (N = 73) continue to use methamphetamine, or relapse to methamphetamine use after a period of cessation of use. All participants met DSM-IV criteria for methamphetamine abuse or

The neuropsychiatry of Parkinson's disease and related disorders.

Parkinson's disease is associated with classical Parkinsonian features that respond to dopaminergic therapy. Neuropsychiatric sequelae include dementia, major depression, dysthymia, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, and sexual disorders. Panic attacks are particularly common. With treatment, visual hallucinations, paranoid delusions, mania, or delirium may evolve. Psychosis is a key factor in nursing home placement, and depression is the most significant predictor of quality of life. Clozapine may be the safest treatment for psychotic features, but more research is needed to establish the ef

Effectiveness of a Virtual Reality Immersion Process as a Nonpharmacological Intervention for Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia and Immediate Well-Being in People Living in Nursing Homes: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are common among nursing home residents, notably those with Alzheimer disease and related diseases, impacting both themselves and health care professionals. Nonpharmacological interventions, including virtual reality (VR), have shown promise, but evidence from multicenter ecological studies remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness, in terms of BPSD evolution, immediate well-being, and social interactions, of a VR-based immersion intervention (Lumeen) as a nonpharmacological approach to manag

Neuropsychiatric symptoms in mild cognitive impairment and early Alzheimer's disease: Clinical pattern and diagnostic implications.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are widely recognized for their hallmark cognitive deficits, typically characterized by progressive cognitive deterioration. However, neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), including depression, apathy, anxiety, irritability, and sleep disturbances, are increasingly prevalent in the early stages of these conditions and significantly influence the disease trajectory and patient outcomes. Importantly, neuropsychiatric symptoms often precede overt memory loss by several years, with subtle mood and behavioral disturbances serving a

Unique amnestic syndrome after isolated left anterolateral thalamic stroke: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The thalamus plays a key role in motor and sensory processes of the brain. Though thalamic stroke is among the less frequent, even a minimal lesion can result in a serious impairment and long-lasting disability. After thalamic stroke, cases of dysexecutive syndrome and so-called diencephalic amnesia have been observed, yet the precise characterisation or categorisation of such amnestic syndrome is not available. Pure amnesia can be the one and only indication of a thalamic lesion. We present a unique case of a patient after left anterolateral thalamic stroke suffering from isolated

"We just keep pushing through": a mixed-method study on musculoskeletal discomfort and mental well-being among nurses in resource-limited settings.

BACKGROUND: Nurses in under-resourced settings frequently report high levels of musculoskeletal (MSK) discomfort, which significantly affects their mental well-being. While workplace strain is well documented, the combined impact of physical burden and institutional neglect remains underexplored in these environments. AIM: The study aims to examine the prevalence of MSK discomfort and its association with psychological well-being among nurses in under-resourced healthcare environments in Northeast India, and to explore the experiential and structural factors contributing to these occupational

Whole-Eye Radiation for the Local Control of Choroidal Lymphoma in Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma: A 14-Year Case Study.

Involved-site radiation therapy is effective for curative and palliative treatments of cancers, including lymphoma. This case study describes the use of whole-eye radiation for primary intraocular lymphoma occurring during primary central nervous system lymphoma. The patient, a 68-year-old man, developed personality changes and apathy two weeks after cataract surgery combined with vitrectomy for vitreous opacity in the left eye. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass lesion in the left frontal lobe, and biopsy by craniotomy confirmed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. He underwent chemotherapy

Pyrrolizidine alkaloid intoxication outbreaks in fattening pigs associated with drought-related feed contamination.

BACKGROUND: Pyrrolizidine alkaloid (PA) intoxication is a well-documented condition in livestock, resulting from the ingestion of forage and grain contaminated with PA-producing plants. These phytotoxins primarily affect the liver and can lead to severe clinical and pathological disorders, particularly in highly susceptibility species such as pigs. Although sporadic cases of chronic PA toxicosis have been reported in swine, extensive outbreaks affecting large geographic areas have not been previously documented. This report describes a large-scale PA intoxication event affecting multiple inten

Osteopontin knockdown reverses HIV-induced cognitive deficits and influences motivation-related behavior.

The neurological complications of HIV or NeuroHIV, representing a spectrum of disorders in people living with HIV, are characterized by memory impairments and cognitive decline. Osteopontin/secreted phosphoprotein 1 (OPN/SPP1), a multifunctional cytokine-like protein secreted by multiple cell types in and outside the central nervous system (CNS), is highly elevated in NeuroHIV and other well-known neurodegenerative disorders. Additionally, previous neuroimaging studies have demonstrated a role for OPN in regulating neuroinflammatory signaling. However, the potential links between CNS-specific

Cavitating Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome Following Correction of Chronic Hyponatremia in Sheehan's Syndrome: A Novel Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid correction of hyponatremia can result in osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS). Sheehan's syndrome, a rare pituitary disorder caused by severe postpartum hemorrhage, is a potential cause of chronic hyponatremia. This case report describes a rare progression of extrapontine myelinolysis to central pontine myelinolysis, ultimately leading to ODS, following the correction of chronic hyponatremia associated with Sheehan's syndrome. Notably, this event occurred a decade after the initial postpartum hemorrhage due to placenta previa. CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old woman from rural We

Agitation and aggression in people living with dementia and mild cognitive impairment in shared-housing arrangements - validation of a German version of the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory-Short Form (CMAI-SF).

BACKGROUND: The Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory-Short Form (CMAI-SF) is a 14-item scale for assessing agitation and aggression, derived from the original 29-item CMAI, and completed by a proxy. Because the CMAI-SF has not yet been validated in German language, the aim of this study is to explore its construct validity. METHODS: Baseline data from a cluster-randomized trial to evaluate a non-pharmacological complex intervention for people living with dementia (PlwD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) were analyzed. The study sample consisted of 97 shared-housing arrangements (SHAs) in Ger

A three-dimensional model of neural activity and phenomenal-behavioral patterns.

How phenomenal experience and behavior are related to neural activity in physiology and psychopathology represents a fundamental question in neuroscience and psychiatry. The phenomenal-behavior patterns may be deconstructed into basic dimensions, i.e., psychomotricity, affectivity, and thought, which might have distinct neural correlates. This work provides a data overview on the relationship of these phenomenal-behavioral dimensions with brain activity across physiological and pathological conditions (including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, attention-deficit/hype

Cryptosporidium mortiferum n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae), the species causing lethal cryptosporidiosis in Eurasian red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris).

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium spp. are globally distributed parasites that infect epithelial cells in the microvillus border of the gastrointestinal tract of all classes of vertebrates. Cryptosporidium chipmunk genotype I is a common parasite in North American tree squirrels. It was introduced into Europe with eastern gray squirrels and poses an infection risk to native European squirrel species, for which infection is fatal. In this study, the biology and genetic variability of different isolates of chipmunk genotype I were investigated. METHODS: The genetic diversity of Cryptosporidium chipmu

Prodromal characteristics of dementia with Lewy bodies: baseline results of the MEMENTO memory clinics nationwide cohort.

BACKGROUND: Isolated subjective cognitive impairment (SCI) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are the prodromal phases of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). MEMENTO is a nationwide study of patients with SCI and MCI with clinic, neuropsychology, biology, and brain imaging data. We aimed to compare SCI and MCI patients with symptoms of prodromal DLB to others in this study at baseline. METHODS: Participants of the French MEMENTO cohort study were recruited for either SCI or MCI. Among them, 892 were included in the Lewy sub-study, designed to search specifically for symptoms of DLB. Probable pr

Neonatal sepsis in dogs: Incidence, clinical aspects and mortality.

The neonatal period in dogs remains associated with high mortality rates. Sepsis is the main cause of neonatal losses during the first three weeks of life. Additionally, failure in the clinical assessment and early diagnosis of sick newborns is still common, leading to inadequate care, which contributes to a high mortality rate. Thus, the objective of this study was to describe the incidence of sepsis in canine newborns, the clinical aspects involved, the main isolated bacterial agents and mortality rates to facilitate clinicians' early recognition of this condition. Of the 152 litters and 762

Distinct clinicopathologic clusters of persons with TDP-43 proteinopathy.

To better understand clinical and neuropathological features of TDP-43 proteinopathies, data were analyzed from autopsied research volunteers who were followed in the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) data set. All subjects (n = 495) had autopsy-proven TDP-43 proteinopathy as an inclusion criterion. Subjects underwent comprehensive longitudinal clinical evaluations yearly for 6.9 years before death on average. We tested whether an unsupervised clustering algorithm could detect coherent groups of TDP-43 immunopositive cases based on age at death and extensive neuropathologic data.
