Increases in functional connectivity between the default mode network and sensorimotor network correlate with symptomatic improvement after transcranial direct current stimulation for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive neuromodulation is a promising intervention for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), although its neurobiological mechanisms of action are still poorly understood. Recent evidence suggests that abnormalities in the connectivity of the default mode network (DMN) and the supplementary motor area (SMA) with other brain regions and networks are involved in OCD pathophysiology. We examined if transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) alters these connectivity patterns and if they correlate with symptom improvement in treatment-resistant OCD. METHODS: In 23 patients fr

[Contemporary criteria of the diagnosis and current recommendations for nutritional therapy in anorexia nervosa].

The basic criterion for the diagnosis of anorexia (AN - anorexia nervosa) by ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, version 10) is the body weight less than 15% of the expected normal body weight. According to DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, version IV) the basic feature of AN is a refusal to maintain body weight equal or greater than the minimal normal weight. The prevalence of anorexia nervosa is 0.3-0.5% or even 1.3-3.7% if include pre-anorexic states (eg. the phenomenon of pro-ana). The main feature of anorexia is a reduction of caloric intake. Ac

Evidence-Based Clinical Effectiveness of Kundalini Yoga: Systematic Review of RCTs Across Multiple Health Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Kundalini Yoga (KY) integrates breathwork, meditation, dynamic movement, and chanting, and has gained recognition as a therapeutic intervention. Despite promising results from individual randomized controlled trials (RCTs), to our knowledge, no systematic review has exclusively synthesized RCT evidence on KY across health domains. OBJECTIVE: To critically assess the clinical effectiveness and safety of KY interventions across diverse cognitive, psychological, emotional, sleep-related, and physical health outcomes. METHODS: PRISMA-guided systematic review of RCTs evaluating KY was

Reconditioning Emotional Responses With the Break Method: Pilot Quantitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The Break Method is a structured, behavior-based emotional reconditioning program designed to help individuals gain insight into patterns of emotional dysregulation and reprogram behavioral responses rooted in past experiences. Although it has been widely adopted in private and small-group settings, empirical evidence supporting its effectiveness remains limited. With increasing interest in accessible, scalable, and personalized mental health interventions, evaluating the outcomes of such programs is essential for informing future implementation and research. OBJECTIVE: This pilot

Characterising the pharmacokinetics of olanzapine in patients with anorexia nervosa (TORPEDO): protocol for a multicentre cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a debilitating eating disorder with one of the highest mortality rates of all psychiatric disorders. The lifetime prevalence rates of AN might be up to 4% among females and 0.3% among males. According to a systematic review, the pooled incidence rate of AN in females is 8.8 per 100 000 person-years; 95% CI 7.8 to 9.8. The path towards full recovery is often long and only half of the patients recover completely after 10 years. As part of the treatment of AN, olanzapine is frequently used to reduce severe anxiety, agitation and obsessive compulsions. Due to

Prevalence and 10-Year Stability of Personality Disorders From Adolescence to Young Adulthood in a High-Risk Sample.

BACKGROUND: With the implementation of the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) in early 2022, there will be a radical change in the framework and process for diagnosing personality disorders (PDs), indicating a transition from the categorical to the dimensional model. Despite increasing evidence that PDs are not as stable as previously assumed, the long-term stability of PDs remains under major debate. The aim of the current paper was to investigate the categorical and dimensional mean-level and rank-order stability of PDs from adolescence into young adulthood

Impaired inhibitory control is associated with higher-order repetitive behaviors in autism spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Impairments in executive cognitive control, including a reduced ability to inhibit prepotent responses, have been reported in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). These deficits may underlie patterns of repetitive behaviors associated with the disorder. METHOD: Eighteen individuals with ASD and 15 age- and IQ-matched healthy individuals performed an antisaccade task and a visually guided saccade control task, each with gap and overlap conditions. Measures of repetitive behaviors were obtained using the Autism Diagnostic Inventory-Revised (ADI-R) and examined in relation to neurocognit

Medications for Opioid Use Disorder, Opioid Withdrawal, and Opioid Overdose: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Opioid use disorder (OUD) involves compulsive opioid use that causes substantial distress or impairment at work, school, or home. OUD, which is the third most prevalent substance use disorder worldwide, affected an estimated 3.7% of US adults (9 367 000) in 2022 and caused 53 774 deaths in the US in 2024. Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) reduce morbidity and mortality. Individuals with OUD also benefit from medications to treat opioid withdrawal and reverse acute opioid overdose. OBSERVATIONS: Methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone are medications approved by the US Fo

[Diogenes syndrome and Hoarding disorder: Same or different?].

INTRODUCTION: In 2013, the American Psychiatric Association published the DSM-5. In this new version, new diagnoses were proposed including the Hoarding disorder. In the French semeiology, the Diogenes syndrome is described, among other symptoms, by a pathological tendency to accumulate objects called syllogomania which is very close to hoarding. This paper explores the similarities and differences between the two syndromes. DESCRIPTION: The Diogenes syndrome was first described in 1966 but was officially named for the ancient Greek philosopher in 1975 by Clark. Its frequency is around five f

Predicting obsessive-compulsive disorder episodes in adolescents using a wearable biosensor-A wrist angel feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD) are marked by distress, negative emotions, mental processes and behaviors that are reflected in physiological signals such as heart rate, electrodermal activity, and skin temperature. Continuous monitoring of physiological signals associated with OCD symptoms may make measures of OCD more objective and facilitate close monitoring of prodromal symptoms, treatment progress and risk of relapse. Thus, we explored the feasibility of capturing OCD events in the real world using an unobtrusive wrist worn biosensor and machine learning models. METHOD

Insight across mental disorders: A multifaceted metacognitive phenomenon.

There is now general agreement that lack of insight is not merely a fundamental aspect of delusions and hallucinations, or just a symptom of psychotic disorders but rather a multi-dimensional construct. Several different components of insight have been proposed and empirically examined during the last three decades, such as the ability to recognize that one has a mental illness, the capacity to relabel unusual mental events as pathological, the specific attribution of one's symptoms to having a mental illness, awareness of illness' consequences, and compliance with treatment.1 Insight impairme

Differential frontal-striatal and paralimbic activity during reversal learning in major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Several lines of research suggest a disturbance of reversal learning (reward and punishment processing, and affective switching) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is also characterized by abnormal reversal learning, and is often co-morbid with MDD. However, neurobiological distinctions between the disorders are unclear. Functional neuroimaging (activation) studies comparing MDD and OCD directly are lacking. METHOD: Twenty non-medicated OCD-free patients with MDD, 20 non-medicated MDD-free patients with OCD, and 27 healthy control

Psychological characteristic subtypes in adolescents with mental disorders and their associations with self-injury behavior and childhood maltreatment.

OBJECTIVES: Self-injury behavior is a prevalent mental health problem among adolescents. Childhood maltreatment is closely associated with the development of alexithymia, impulsivity, and self-injury behavior in adolescents and young adults with mental disorders; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to classify psychiatric patients aged 12 to 24 years into psychological subtypes based on alexithymic and impulsive traits, to explore differences in self-injury behavior among these subtypes, and to examine whether different forms of childhood maltreatment are associa
