Biomechanical Comparison of Distal Biceps Tendon Repair Techniques: Extracortical Single-Button Inlay Fixation Versus Intracortical Double-Button Onlay Anatomic Footprint Fixation.

BACKGROUND: Extracortical single-button (SB) inlay repair is a commonly used distal biceps tendon technique. However, complications (eg, neurovascular injury) and nonanatomic repairs have led to the development of intracortical fixation techniques. PURPOSE: To compare the biomechanical stability of extracortical SB repair with an anatomic intracortical double-button (DB) repair technique. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: The distal biceps tendon was transected in 18 cadaveric elbows from 9 donors. One elbow of each donor was randomly assigned to the extracortical SB or an

Outcomes of Second-Generation Tapered Wedge Femoral Stem.

INTRODUCTION: Newer generation cementless femoral stems have been designed to emulate more precisely the anatomy of the native femur. However, few studies have evaluated these designs. The purpose of this study was therefore to evaluate outcomes of primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients who received a second-generation, tapered wedge stem by analyzing (1) all-cause and aseptic implant survivorships; (2) clinical and patient-reported outcomes; (3) radiographic outcomes; and (4) incidence of complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 202 primary THA patients (37% men, 63% wome

Broad spectrum of skeletal malformation complex in patients with cleidocranial dysplasia syndrome: radiographic and tomographic study.

PURPOSE: Cleidocranial dysplasia is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by defective ossification of the intramembraneous ossification (primarily the clavicles, cranium, and pelvis), and it is caused by mutations in the RUNX2 gene that is responsible for osteoblast differentiation. Spine deformities were of progressive nature and considered to be the major orthopedic abnormalities encountered in our practice in patients with cleidocranial dysplasia. We aimed to further delineate the underlying spine pathology and its etiological understanding. Extraspinal deformities were dealt with r

Auditory brainstem implant (ABI): new frontiers in adults and children.

UNLABELLED: Previous studies have considered only patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) older than 12 years as candidates for an auditory brainstem implant (ABI). Our study expands the potential criteria to include both children and adult subjects with other cochlear or cochlear nerve malfunctions who either would not benefit at all from a cochlear implant (eg, cochlear nerve aplasia or avulsion) or whose benefit was or would be severely compromised (eg, cochlear ossification, cochlear fracture). STUDY DESIGN: In our department, over the period from April 1997 to September 2002, 29 pat

Enhancing Combat Surgical Readiness: The Development and Impact of the Combat Craniomaxillofacial Trauma Surgery Course.

INTRODUCTION: Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) trauma is significantly rising from drone delivered blasts in military and civilian settings. CMF traumatic injuries from airburst blasts present uniquely complex surgical challenges. The abrupt transmission and dissipation of energy causes barotrauma to the orbit, paranasal sinuses, tympanic membrane, inhalation injury, crush injuries, fractures and dislocations. High velocity projectiles cause deep lacerations, comminuted fractures, embedded foreign bodies, avulsion, degloving and other complex wounds. Surgical management is complicated by contaminatio

Management of firearm injuries to the facial skeleton: Outcomes from early primary intervention.

AIM: Treatment of maxillofacial firearm injuries is still controversial with regard to timing of management. We postulate that not all maxillofacial firearm injuries need be delayed and that many may be treated early. To this end, a 19-year retrospective study was undertaken seeking to evaluate patients treated for firearm injuries to the facial skeleton at our center. The criteria which dictated when to operate are presented as are the results, benefits, and outcomes of the patients treated acutely. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1991 to 2010, 51 patients with maxillofacial firearm injuries were

Anatomical factors associated with the development of anterior tibial spine fractures based on MRI measurements.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have investigated anatomic factors for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, such as posterior tibial slope (PTS) and notch width index (NWI). However, anterior tibial spine fracture (ATSF) as a specific pattern of ACL injury, a bony avulsion of the ACL from its insertion on the intercondylar spine of the tibia, has rarely been explored for its anatomical risk factors. Identifying anatomic parameters of the knee associated with ATSF is important for understanding injury mechanisms and prevention. METHODS: Patients who underwent surgery for ATSF between Januar

Factors associated with sports-related dental injuries among young athletes: a cross-sectional study in Miyagi prefecture.

BACKGROUND: Sports-related dental injuries, such as tooth fracture, loosening, and avulsion, are a major concern among young athletes because they directly impair oral function. Although the preventive efficacy of mouthguards has been well established, the prevalence of sports-related dental injuries remains high among young athletes. The aim of this study is to identify the variables contributing to the risk of sports-related dental injuries by conducting a survey on large population of young athletes in Miyagi prefecture. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with school-aged athle

Total knee replacement following intra-articular malunion.

INTRODUCTION: There is a lack of data on the management of osteoarthritis of the knee associated with intra-articular malunion. The present study sought to analyze and report results of total knee replacement (TKR) in this indication, including complications and technical specificities. HYPOTHESIS: TKR for osteoarthritis of the knee associated with intra-articular malunion entails an elevated risk of complication, with impaired functional results. OBJECTIVES: To test this hypothesis in a retrospective series of 74 cases of osteoarthritis of the knee associated with intra-articular malunion.
