Geogenic greenhouse gas emissions and shale weathering: lessons learned from an alpine "eternal flame".

Natural hydrocarbon gas seeps have been reported over a wide range of geological settings, and their contribution to atmospheric concentrations of potent greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4) may be considerable. Potential gas sources in sedimentary environments include organic-rich source rocks such as peats, coalbeds, and shale clays. The origins of natural methane seepages occurring in the French Subalpine Chains are poorly constrained and only little information is available on the mechanisms behind the gas release by weathering of organic-rich shales, notably when overprinted by recent tectonism. Multiscale Speciation of U and Pu at Chernobyl, Hanford, Los Alamos, McGuire AFB, Mayak, and Rocky Flats.

The speciation of U and Pu in soil and concrete from Rocky Flats and in particles from soils from Chernobyl, Hanford, Los Alamos, and McGuire Air Force Base and bottom sediments from Mayak was determined by a combination of X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) element maps. These experiments identify four types of speciation that sometimes may and other times do not exhibit an association with the source terms and histories of these samples: relatively well ordered PuO2+x and UO2+x that had equilibrated with O2 and H2O under both ambient conditions a

Source Apportionment of Heavy Metals in Stream Sediments from the Hilly Western Wanda Mountains Based on PCA-APCS-MLR.

The hilly terrain at the western foot of the Wanda Mountains boasts intricate geological conditions, compounded by long-term mineral extraction and farming activities. The multi-sourced heavy metals stored within stream sediments create substantial obstacles to accurate source apportionment and targeted risk mitigation. In this work, stream sediment samples were collected across the study watershed to test concentrations of eight heavy metals: As, Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, Hg and Zn. Pollution and ecological risk assessments were implemented via the pollution load index (PLI), geo-accumulation index

Bioactive pigment production by marine bacteria from Colombian estuarine and deep-sea environments.

The marine environment is a reservoir of microbial diversity with high biotechnological potential. Natural pigments, such as some secondary metabolites, are of particular interest due to their ease of microbial cultivation and recovery, as well as their diverse biological activities. This study aimed to explore pigment production by bacteria isolated from estuarine and deep-sea environments in Colombia and evaluate their antimicrobial potential. Six from twenty-six isolates were tested for pigment production, and were taxonomically assigned to the genera Streptomyces (four), Pseudomonas (one),

Optimization of antimicrobial compound production by mangrove sediment derived Micromonospora sp. BSS-D-04 and Streptomyces sp. BSS-D-05 using response surface methodology.

In response to the growing global health crisis caused by antibiotic resistance, actinobacteria have emerged as a promising group of microorganisms capable of producing diverse and potent bioactive compounds. India's mangrove ecosystems, known for their rich microbial biodiversity, provide a unique habitat for discovering such novel organisms. In a previous study, two actinobacterial strains, Micromonospora sp. BSS-D-04 and Streptomyces sp. BSS-D-05 were isolated from the Bichitrapur mangrove sediments along the east coast of India and were found to exhibit broad-spectrum antibacterial activit

Unraveling the activity of phage-carrying antibiotic resistance genes in constructed wetlands.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health challenge, and risk assessments based solely on gene abundance often underestimate the immediacy of resistance dissemination. This study presented a carrier-centric framework integrating metagenomic and metatranscriptomic profiling with deep learning-based identification of mobile genetic elements, applied to a full-scale constructed wetland (CW). CW overall reduced ARG burdens, with genomic abundance in plants, sediments, and water decreasing by 98.5%, 80.9%, and 88.8%, respectively. However, transcriptional activity showed an opposite

Neoarchaean oxygen-based nitrogen cycle en route to the Great Oxidation Event.

The nitrogen isotopic composition of sedimentary rocks (δ15N) can trace redox-dependent biological pathways and early Earth oxygenation1,2. However, there is no substantial change in the sedimentary δ15N record across the Great Oxidation Event about 2.45 billion years ago (Ga)3, a prominent redox change. This argues for a temporal decoupling between the emergence of the first oxygen-based oxidative pathways of the nitrogen cycle and the accumulation of atmospheric oxygen after 2.45 Ga (ref. 3). The transition between both states shows strongly positive δ15N values (10-50‰) in rocks deposited b

Occurrence, spatiotemporal distribution patterns, partitioning and risk assessments of multiple pesticide residues in typical estuarine water environments in eastern China.

The low terrain and the prosperous agriculture in the east of China, have caused the accumulation of pesticide residues in the estuaries. Therefore, this study analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution and partition tendency of 106 pesticides based on their abundance, frequencies, and concentrations in the aquatic environment of 16 river estuaries in 7 major basins in the eastern China by using solid-phase extraction (SPE) with high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC‒MS/MS) and gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC‒MS/MS). Electrocoagulation coupled with electrooxidation for the simultaneous treatment of multiple pollutants in contaminated sediments.

In situ and simultaneous remediation of a variety of pollutants in sediments remains a challenge. In this study, we report that the combination of electrocoagulation (EC) and electrooxidation (EO) is efficient in the immobilization of phosphorus and heavy metals and in the oxidation of ammonium and toxic organic matter. The integrated mixed metal oxide (MMO)/Fe anode system allowed the facile removal of ammonium and phosphorus in the overlying water (99% of 10 mg/L NH4+-N and 95% of 10 mg/L P disappeared in 15 and 30 min, respectively). Compared with the controls of the single Fe anode and sin

Functionalized Biochar/Clay Composites for Reducing the Bioavailable Fraction of Arsenic and Cadmium in River Sediment.

Biochar has frequently been used for the treatment of heavy metal pollution in water and soil; its effect on contaminated sediments requires further research. To improve the ability of biochar to immobilize heavy metals in sediment, we prepared a functionalized biochar/attapulgite composite by pyrolysis of the clay attapulgite and zinc chloride-pretreated rice straw biomass. Compared with the original biochar, the biochar/attapulgite composite had a large increase in specific surface area, pore volume, oxygen-containing functional groups, and cation exchange capacity. Biochar effectively impro

An effervescence-assisted switchable fatty acid-based microextraction with solidification of floating organic droplet for determination of fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines in seawater, sediment, and seafood.

This study developed a new effervescence-assisted switchable fatty acid-based microextraction combined with solidification of a floating organic-droplet (EA-SFAM-SFO) for simple and rapid determination of fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines in seawater, sediment, and seafood. Five medium-chain fatty acids (pentanoic acid, hexanoic acid, heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, and nonanoic acid) were tested as an extraction solvent, given their ability to change between hydrophobic and hydrophilic forms by pH adjustment. As nonanoic acid had the highest extraction recovery (>92%) for the six antibiotics

Carbon Amendments Alter Microbial Community Structure and Net Mercury Methylation Potential in Sediments.

Neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) is produced by anaerobic Bacteria and Archaea possessing the genes hgcAB, but it is unknown how organic substrate and electron acceptor availability impacts the distribution and abundance of these organisms. We evaluated the impact of organic substrate amendments on mercury (Hg) methylation rates, microbial community structure, and the distribution of hgcAB+ microbes with sediments. Sediment slurries were amended with short-chain fatty acids, alcohols, or a polysaccharide. Minimal increases in MeHg were observed following lactate, ethanol, and methanol amendment

Microcosm environment models for studying the stability of adenovirus and murine norovirus in water and sediment.

Microcosms are useful tools for understanding the survival and fate of enteric viruses in aquatic environments. This study set out to determine the stability of infectious enteric viruses in an aquatic environment using a laboratory scale microcosm. Sediment and overlaying water were collected from a lagoon and inoculated with known concentrations of recombinant adenovirus (AdV-GFP) and murine norovirus (MNV-1). Infectious particles of these viruses were measured using fluorescence microscopy (AdV-GFP) or the plaque assay method (MNV-1), over 85 days in two different conditions: under natural

Detecting long-term temporal trends in sediment-bound trace metals from urbanised catchments.

The shift from rural lifestyles to urban living has dramatically altered the way humans interact and live across the globe. With over 50% of the world's populations living within cities, and significant increases expected over the next 50 years, it is critical that changes to social, economic and environmental sustainability of cities globally be implicit. Protecting and enhancing aquatic ecosystems, which provide important ecosystem services, is challenging. A number of factors influence pollutants in urban waterways including changes in land-use, impervious area and stormwater discharges, wi

Monitoring the aquatic toxicity of mosquito vector control spray pesticides to freshwater receiving waters.

Pesticides are applied to state and local waterways in California to control insects such as mosquitoes, which are known to serve as a vector for West Nile Virus infection of humans. The California State Water Resources Control Board adopted a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System General Permit to address the discharge to waters of the United States of pesticides resulting from adult and larval mosquito control. Because pesticides used in spray activities have the potential to cause toxicity to nontarget organisms in receiving waters, the current study was designed to determine whet

Determination of alcohol sulfates and alcohol ethoxysulfates in marine and river sediments using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

A novel and successful method has been developed for the identification and quantification of alcohol sulfates (AS) homologues and alcohol ethoxysulfates (AES) ethoxymers in marine and river sediment samples. The method involves the extraction of 5.00 g of dry sample with methanol using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). 2-Octylbenzene sulfonic acid sodium salt (2ØC8-LAS) was used as internal standard. The analytical methods were applied to marine sediments collected from the coast of Almeria (South-east Spain) and river sediments

Mercury stable isotopes in sediments and largemouth bass from Florida lakes, USA.

Humans and wildlife can be exposed to mercury (Hg) through the consumption of fish with elevated concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg). Studies have shown that increased atmospheric deposition of Hg often leads to increased MeHg concentrations in aquatic organisms. However, depending on the ecosystem characteristics, reductions in Hg emissions may not always lead to immediate decreases in fish MeHg concentrations. Measurements of natural abundance Hg stable isotope ratios may enable a better understanding of these complex relationships. To gain insight into the sources of Hg to sport fish in
