Development of a Group Psychotherapy for Combat Veterans With Moral Injury: Protocol for a User-Centered Study.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 25% of combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) seek treatment for traumas involving potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), which involve acts of commission, omission, or betrayal that deeply transgress one's sense of right and wrong. The sequelae of exposure to PMIEs, called "moral injury," are associated with functional and psychiatric impairment and disrupt veterans' sense of identity and meaning, ability to connect with and trust others, and engender disturbing guilt, shame, rage, and disgust. Currently, no first-line treatments directly ad

'I don't really know where I stand because I don't know if I took something away from her': Moral injury in South African speech-language therapists and audiologists due to patient death and dying.

BACKGROUND: Speech-language therapists and audiologists (SLT&As) may encounter difficulties when confronted with patient death and dying, which may conflict with their moral beliefs and result in moral injury. Furthermore, South African SLT&As practice in a country with a high mortality rate, which may add to the complexity of their experience. Moreover, they may be influenced by African philosophies promoting care, which might conflict with their experiences of patient death and dying. AIMS: To explore the moral injury experienced by South African SLT&As in patient death and dying, and how t

[Managing adolescent and adult victims of extra-familial rape soon after aggression].

Rape victims often experience severe and prolonged symptoms in the aftermath of the assault. Psychological assistance offered rapidly after the assault should mitigate the intensity and moderate the duration of rape-related problems. This paper tried to identify the widely-accepted therapeutic approaches from a review of the current literature; it has its roots in the clinical experience acquired by our mobile crisis service in this type of situation, too. The goal of the following practices concerning the victim and the victim's immediate family is to assist the victim to reclaim control as q

Tailoring of Health-Promotion Video Messaging for Reproductive-Aged Women at Risk for Developing Cardiometabolic Disease: Qualitative Focus-Groups Study.

BACKGROUND: Targeting reproductive-aged women at high risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D) provides an opportunity for prevention earlier in the life course. A woman's experiences during her reproductive years may have a large impact on her future risk of T2D. Her risk is 7 to 10 times higher if she has had gestational diabetes (GDM). Despite these risks, T2D is preventable. Evidence-based programs, such as the National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), can reduce the risk of developing T2D by nearly 60%. However, only 0.4% of adults with prediabetes have participated in the DPP to date and reprodu

Virtual Reality-Based Interventions for Treating Depression in the Context of COVID-19 Pandemic: Inducing the Proficit in Positive Emotions as a Key Concept of Recovery and a Path Back to Normality.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic as much as 40% of the global population reported deterioration in depressive mood, whereas 26% experienced increased need for emotional support. At the same time, the availability of on-site psychiatric care declined drastically because of the COVID-19 preventive social restriction measures. To address this shortfall, telepsychiatry assumes a greater role in mental health care services. Among various on-line treatment modalities, immersive virtual reality (VR) environments provide an important resource for adjusting the emotional state in people living

Insights into the management of emerging infections: regulating variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease transfusion risk in the UK and the US.

BACKGROUND: Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is a human prion disease caused by infection with the agent of bovine spongiform encephalopathy. After the recognition of vCJD in the UK in 1996, many nations implemented policies intended to reduce the hypothetical risk of transfusion transmission of vCJD. This was despite the fact that no cases of transfusion transmission had yet been identified. In December 2003, however, the first case of vCJD in a recipient of blood from a vCJD-infected donor was announced. The aim of this study is to ascertain and compare the factors that influenced th

[Pharmacological treatment of delusional depression].

Delusional depression is characterised by the presence of symptoms such as hallucinations (typically auditory) and delusions either mood congruent and incongruent. Most commonly the content of delusions is consistent with the depressive themes: guilt, unworthlessness, poverty, death. Hallucinations, when present, are not elaborate and may involve voices that berate the patient for shortcomings or sins. Mood incongruent psychotic symptoms include persecutory delusions, delusions of thought insertion or thought broadcasting. Several pharmacological studies have demonstrated a differential respon

Clinical impact of molecular genetic diagnosis, genetic counseling, and management of hereditary cancer. Part II: Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal carcinoma as a model.

Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal carcinoma (HNPCC) is the most common hereditary form of colorectal carcinoma (CRC) and may account for 5-10% of the total CRC burden. The discovery of DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes, inclusive of hMSH2, hMLH1, hPMS2, and hMSH6, has enabled the identification of who has and who does not have inordinately increased susceptibility to CRC as well as a litany of extracolonic cancers. Mutation testing has focused on hMSH2 and hMLH1, the most common mutations in HNPCC. The protocol for DNA testing and DNA-based genetic counseling is described in Part I of this stud

Emotional, Ethical and Cultural Challenges in Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) Decision-Making: A Systematic Review and Meta-Synthesis.

BackgroundPercutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is a critical intervention for patients with neurological and gastrointestinal conditions affecting oral intake. While clinical guidelines emphasise medical indications, they often overlook the intricate emotional, ethical and cultural concerns that shape decision-making. This gap in understanding leads to variability in clinical recommendations and uncertainty among patients and their families. A deeper exploration of these factors is necessary to support informed, patient-centred decision-making.AimThis systematic review and meta-synthesis

Is falling in love within the mental health system a problem? How to turn it into a chance for the care relationship.

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE SUBJECT?: In the context of health and social care, situations at the limit or beyond the role of the professional, such as falling in love and physical attraction between a client and a nurse, are very common events. In residential contexts, the construction of the professional relationship is made more complex than in other care contexts since sharing daily life, routine, constant contact and isolation contribute to making relationships more intense from an emotional point of view. Moreover, the same elements that promote the therapeutic process (interpers

Unanticipated Changes in Drug Overdose Death Rates in Canada During the Opioid Crisis.

INTRODUCTION: Rates of overweight among US children have been rising over the past three decades. Changes in lifestyle behaviors, including dietary and physical activity habits, have been examined thoroughly to identify correlates of weight status in children. Youth in rural US Appalachia are at a disproportionately greater risk for obesity and related health complications. Inadequate physical activity and poor dietary habits are two primary causes of obesity that have been noted in West Virginia adolescents. Few existing data describes the decisional balance in performing lifestyle behaviors,

The Experiences and Perceptions of Organizational Support Among Chinese Nurses Following Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are highly prevalent among nurses in China and can affect nurses' health, work ability, professional identity, and retention. Although Organizational Support Theory suggests that perceived organizational support shapes employees' post-injury attitudes and behaviours, little qualitative evidence explains how Chinese nurses interpret organizational responses after WMSDs, especially in the context of high clinical workloads and staffing pressure. OBJECTIVE(S): To explore and describe the experiences and perceptions of organizational supp

Conflict-related and sexual trauma in treatment-seeking Arabic-speaking men: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Sexual trauma in the context of conflict and displacement is considered one of the most serious and stigmatising forms of human rights violations. Although it has occurred throughout history, research data on this topic is scarce, especially regarding male survivors and Arabic-speaking countries. In the present study, we examined sexual and conflict-related trauma prevalence rates and those of other trauma types, as well as associations with sociodemographic and psychological characteristics among men from Arabic-speaking countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region
