Pre-existing fractures and bone mass predict vertebral fracture incidence in women.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the independent contributions of bone mass and existing fractures as predictors of the risk for new vertebral fractures. SUBJECTS: Postmenopausal Japanese-American women. MEASUREMENTS: Baseline measurements of the distal radius, the proximal radius, and the calcaneus were obtained in 1981 using single-photon absorptiometry. Measurements of the lumbar spine were obtained in 1984 using dual-photon absorptiometry. Prevalent vertebral fractures were identified using dimensions measured on lateral radiographs; vertebral height values more than 3 SD below vertebra-specific

The paper deals with the estimation of the capabilities and role of different radiation techniques in the detection of late postradiation therapy local tissue responses that are evident as radionecrosis. To specify the nature of changes, it is necessary to take into account clinicoanamnestic data, results of laboratory and instrumental studies (standard X-ray study, multislice computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging) at any examination stage. A set of the studies can provide the means of significantly analyzing the bone structures and soft tissues and the degree of injury and ident

Classification of axial SpA based on positive imaging (radiographs and/or MRI of the sacroiliac joints) by local rheumatologists or radiologists versus central trained readers in the DESIR cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Investigating changes in patient classification (ASAS (Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society) axSpA criteria) based on evaluation of images of the sacro-iliac joints (MRI-SI and X-SI) by local and central readers. METHODS: The DESIR cohort included patients with inflammatory back pain (IBP; ≥3 months, but <3 years), suggestive of axSpA. Local radiologists/rheumatologists (local-reading) and two central readers (central-reading) evaluated baseline images. Agreement regarding positive MRI (pos-MRI) between central readers and between local-reading and central-reading

Diagnosis and Treatment of Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the axial bone and sacroiliac joints. Its etiology is complicated and involves genetic variables, demographic factors (age of onset, gender, ethnicity, family history), and environmental variables. It typically manifests in males in their third decade. Galen is credited with first recognizing it, according to historical traditions, but it was not until the 19th century that specific diagnostic criteria were developed. The human leukocyte antigen B27 (HLA-B27) variation, around 20% of the genetic risk, is curren

Single-Centre Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Sacroiliac Joints in a Paediatric Population.

Background: Sacroiliitis in children is usually connected with one of the subtypes of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), such as enthesitis-related arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, or undifferentiated arthritis. The main diagnostic method is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the sacroiliac joints, which can reveal bone marrow edema (BME) as a sign of an active inflammation process. This research aimed to retrospectively investigate the associations between the clinical presentation, laboratory test results, and MRI results of the sacroiliac joints of children. Methods: A total of 152 paedia

[A Case Report on Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Secondary to Neurobrucellosis in a Patient with Cerebral Aneurysm].

Brucellosis is a multisystemic infection produced by a gram-negative bacillus that can develop a variety of clinical symptoms and complications. Involvement of the central nervous system is a challenging and dangerous consequence of systemic brucellosis. The neurobrucellosis clinical spectrum can be classified as central and peripheral. Meningitis, encephalitis, polyradiculoneuritis, cranial nerve involvement, depression, abscess and cerebrovascular events are some of the potential complications that may develop. The link between neurobrucellosis and cerebrovascular accident has been reported

Australian Consensus Statements for the Assessment and Management of Non-radiographic Axial Spondyloarthritis.

BACKGROUND: The understanding of non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA) has accelerated over the last decade, producing a number of practice-changing developments. Diagnosis is challenging. No diagnostic criteria exist, no single finding is diagnostic, and other causes of back pain may act as confounders. AIM: To update and expand the 2014 consensus statement on the investigation and management of non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA). METHODS: We created search questions based on our previous statements and four new topics then searched the MEDLINE and Cochrane da

HLA-B27 predicts a more extended disease with increasing age at onset in boys with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a heterogeneous condition with very few clinical and laboratory signs that can help predict the course and severity of the disease in the individual patient. The cell-surface antigen HLA-B27 is well known to be associated with spondyloarthropathies, reactive arthritis, and enthesitis. HLA-B27 plays an important role in the classification of JIA, since evidence of sacroiliitis most often evolves after years of arthritis in other joints. We investigated the associations of HLA-B27 and the clinical manifestations of JIA using a method as close to

Radiologic changes of cervical spine in ankylosing spondylitis.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is characterised by its effects on the axial skeleton. The cervical spine is also vulnerable to the disease process. Our aim was to determine the frequency of radiologic changes to the cervical spine and their correlation with clinical variables. We also used the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Radiology Index (BASRI) system, which is one of the reliable scoring systems of radiography, to score the global radiologic changes to the cervical and lumbar spine and the hip joints in our AS cohort. There were 181 patients with anteroposterior and lateral full-flexion views on

Influence of age and gender on quantitative sacroiliac joint scintigraphy.

UNLABELLED: The value of quantitative sacroiliac joint scintigraphy for detecting sacroiliitis is controversial. Age and gender may contribute to this discordance. In previous reports, the number of control groups has been small and might not exactly reflect the change of sacroiliac/sacral (SI/S) ratios related to different age. In addition, the selection of control subjects was not strict. In most studies, care was not taken to ensure that control subjects did not have a history of back pain or any other relevant conditions. In addition, there was no requirement for a normal radiograph as a c
