This report provides an epidemiological description of selected vaccine-preventable diseases in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, for 2014 to inform ongoing disease monitoring and control efforts. A trend of increasing pertussis notifications was observed, beginning midway through 2014 with the highest disease rates in the 5-9 year age group. Routine vaccines are listed on the Recommended Childhood and Adolescent Immunization Schedule and the Recommended Adult Immunization Schedule published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and reviewed and updated by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. For these vaccines, we discuss the disease burden, rationale for vaccination, efficacy, adverse reactions, and recommendations. Some new vaccines are discussed here (Tdap and zoster), whereas others (rotavirus and human papillomavirus) are discussed elsewhere in the supplement.

A commonly used Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (whole-cell) vaccine was combined with each of three different Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) capsular polysaccharide vaccines. Thailand has incorporated the whole-cell (wP) pertussis vaccine into the expanded program on immunization since 1977 and has offered the acellular pertussis (aP) vaccine as an optional vaccine for infants since 2001. We followed healthy children from a clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02408926) in which children were randomly assigned to receive either pentavalent (DTwP-HB-Hib) or hexavalent (DTaP-IPV-HB-Hib) vaccines for their primary series (administered at 2, 4, and 6 months) and first booster vaccination (18 months).
