One Health Approach to Sporothrix brasiliensis: Disinfection Strategies for Control and Prevention.

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is a neglected tropical disease caused by several species of Sporothrix, of which S. brasiliensis is the most virulent. Transmission primarily occurs through scratches, bites, or direct contact with exudates from infected cats and potentially through fomites. METHODS: We evaluated the efficacy of different disinfectant solutions in eliminating S. brasiliensis from contaminated surfaces, including medium-density fiberboard (MDF), tiles, stainless steel, and polyester fabric, by simulating both domestic and clinical environments. Sterile 9-cm² sections were uniformly

In vitro susceptibility of antifungal drugs against Sporothrix brasiliensis recovered from cats with sporotrichosis in Brazil.

Sporotrichosis is an important subcutaneous mycosis of humans and animals. Classically, the disease is acquired upon traumatic inoculation of Sporothrix propagules from contaminated soil and plant debris. In addition, the direct horizontal transmission of Sporothrix among animals and the resulting zoonotic infection in humans highlight an alternative and efficient rout of transmission through biting and scratching. Sporothrix brasiliensis is the most virulent species of the Sporothrix schenckii complex and is responsible for the long-lasting outbreak of feline sporotrichosis in Brazil. However

Factors that predict remission of infant atopic dermatitis: a systematic review.

The individual prognosis of infants with atopic dermatitis (AD) is important for parents, healthcare professionals, and society. The aim of this study was to investigate predictors for remission of infant AD until school age. A systematic review was carried out of clinical and epidemiological studies investigating the effect of filaggrin gene (FLG) loss-of-function mutations, sex, exposure to pets, topical anti-inflammatory treatment, disease severity, and atopic sensitization during infancy on complete remission of infant-onset AD until 6-7 years of age. Systematic electronic searches until S

Fever of unknown origin and splenomegaly: A case report of blood culture negative endocarditis.

RATIONALE: Fever of unknown origin (FUO) can be determined by different conditions among which infectious diseases represent the main cause. PATIENT CONCERNS: A young woman, with a history of aortic stenosis, was admitted to our unit for a month of intermittent fever associated with a new diastolic heart murmur and splenomegaly. Laboratory tests were negative for infectious screening. The total body computed tomography (CT) scan excluded abscesses, occulted neoplasia, or lymphadenopathy. DIAGNOSES: The transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiogram showed an aortic valve vegetation. Three

"Cat scratch colon" causing cecal perforation as a rare complication due to barotrauma during colonoscopy: A case report and literature review.

"Cat scratch colon" (CSC), characterized by spontaneous bright-red linear markings or mucosal laceration with bleeding due to air insufflation barotrauma, is a rare complication during colonoscopy. These mucosal lacerations can present as superficial tears that do not generally have clinical repercussions or as deeper tears that damage the muscularis and cause perforation. CSC occurs in the colon with submucosal stiffening disease, such as collagenous colitis; however, in cases unrelated to these diseases, CSC appears in the cecum or ascending colon for anatomical reasons. Herein, we report a

[Subcutaneous nodules with malignant presentation, but caused by infection].

Three patients, a woman aged 32, a boy aged 6.5 and a man aged 56 years, presented with a subcutaneous mass suggesting a malignancy: respectively a rubbery swelling, painful to the touch below the left scapula, a partly massive, partly soft swelling on the inside of the left upper leg, and a non-fluctuating mass near the right eighth rib, parasternally. Additional diagnostic investigation revealed an infectious cause: respectively Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Bartonella henselae and Salmonella typhi. Antimicrobial therapy was successful. Subcutaneous masses suspected of being a benign or malign

Disseminated Bartonellosis in a Kidney Transplant Recipient Complicated by Infection-associated Glomerulonephritis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Bartonella henselae is the causative agent of cat-scratch disease, which is characterized by self-limited regional lymphadenopathy with fever. However, visceral manifestations are possible, especially in immunocompromised patients. Here, we report a case of bartonellosis in a kidney transplant (KT) recipient complicated by glomerulonephritis (GN) associated with the infection. A 52-year-old male who received a deceased-donor KT a year earlier presented to the emergency department with fever, malaise, and abdominal pain. Maintenance immunosuppression consisted of tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofet

Subtractive Proteomics and Reverse-Vaccinology Approaches for Novel Drug Target Identification and Chimeric Vaccine Development against Bartonella henselae Strain Houston-1.

Bartonella henselae is a Gram-negative bacterium causing a variety of clinical symptoms, ranging from cat-scratch disease to severe systemic infections, and it is primarily transmitted by infected fleas. Its status as an emerging zoonotic pathogen and its capacity to persist within host erythrocytes and endothelial cells emphasize its clinical significance. Despite progress in understanding its pathogenesis, limited knowledge exists about the virulence factors and regulatory mechanisms specific to the B. henselae strain Houston-1. Exploring these aspects is crucial for targeted therapeutic str

Molecular detection of Bartonella coopersplainsensis and B. henselae in rats from New Zealand.

AIM To identify Bartonella spp. in rats from New Zealand using molecular methods. METHODS DNA was extracted from the spleens of 143 black rats (Rattus rattus) captured in the Tongariro National Park, New Zealand. PCR was performed using Bartonella genus-specific primers amplifying segments of the 16S-23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer and citrate synthase (gltA) and beta subunit of the RNA polymerase (rpoB) genes. PCR products were sequenced and compared online with sequences stored in the database of the National Center for Biotechnology Information of the United States of America. RESULTS

Serological testing for Bartonella henselae infections in The Netherlands: clinical evaluation of immunofluorescence assay and ELISA.

Cat-scratch disease (CSD), caused by Bartonella henselae infection, can mimic malignancy and can manifest atypically. Reliable serological testing is therefore of great clinical importance. The diagnostic performance of immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and ELISA was evaluated in a group of Dutch patients with proven CSD (clinical diagnosis confirmed by PCR). Sera of 51 CSD patients and 56 controls (patients with similar symptoms, but who were B. henselae PCR-negative and had an alternative confirmed diagnosis) were tested for anti-B. henselae IgM and IgG by IFA and ELISA. Binding of Bartonella henselae to extracellular molecules: identification of potential adhesins.

Bartonella henselae, the etiologic agent of cat scratch disease, bacillary angiomatosis and other clinical syndromes initiates infection through a trauma or wound to the skin suggesting involvement of extracellular matrix molecules. We have demonstrated in this study that B. henselae bound strongly fibronectin, collagen IX and X, but comparatively less laminin and collagen IV. B. henselae bound primarily the N- and C-terminal heparin (Hep-1 and Hep-2, respectively) and the gelatin-binding domains of fibronectin (Fn) but not the cell-binding domain. Binding to the Hep-binding domain was signifi

Analysis of Bartonella adhesin A expression reveals differences between various B. henselae strains.

Bartonella henselae causes cat scratch disease and the vasculoproliferative disorders bacillary angiomatosis and peliosis hepatis in humans. One of the best known pathogenicity factors of B. henselae is Bartonella adhesin A (BadA), which is modularly constructed, consisting of head, neck/stalk, and membrane anchor domains. BadA is important for the adhesion of B. henselae to extracellular-matrix proteins and endothelial cells (ECs). In this study, we analyzed different B. henselae strains for BadA expression, autoagglutination, fibronectin (Fn) binding, and adhesion to ECs. We found that the B

[Hepatic abscesses in childhood: retrospective study about 33 cases observed in New-Caledonia between 1985 and 2003].

UNLABELLED: Hepatic abscesses in childhood are rarely observed in Europe. The aim of this word was to study how to diagnose and how to treat an hepatic abscess. METHODS: Between 1985 and 2003, we recensed retrospectively 33 cases of hepatic abscesses hospitalised in the paediatric unit of Noumea. RESULTS: Children were mainly melanesians (79%), 7 years old on average, having abdominal pains, a clinical and biological infectious syndrome, and abscesses images on ultrasonography or computed tomography. The identified micro-organisms included Entamoeba histolytica in 30% (10 cases); Staphylococ
