Journal of neurology, neurosurgery, and psychiatry1978eng
During a three year period 1970--1973 necropsies were performed on 200 patients who died in a mental hospital in the Transvaal, South Africa. There was no selection of cases other than availability of consent for postmortem examination. The necropsy rate for this period was 56%. The patients belonged to three racial groups, Black, White, and Coloured, the latter being defined as those of mixed blood. Among these 200 cases, 27 were found at necropsy to have an intracranial space-occupying mass. Mention is made of the literature dealing with the incidence and diagnosis of intracranial space-occu

Khawia abbottinae sp. n. is described from the Chinese false gudgeon, Abbottina rivularis (Basilewsky) (Cyprinidae: Gobioninae), from the Yangtze River basin in China. The new species can be distinguished from the congeneric species mainly by the arrangements of the testes, which form two longitudinal bands (other congeneric species have the testes irregularly scattered throughout the testicular region) and their number (at maximum 85 testes versus at least 160 in the other Khawia spp.), and the morphology of the scolex, which varies from cuneiform to widely bulbate scolex, being separated fro

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval stages of taeniid cestodes of the genus Echinococcus. The two major types of infection in humans are cystic echinococcosis (CE) or hydatidosis and alveolar echinococcosis (AE). It is endemic in some parts of the world, such as the Middle East, with Iran being a part of it. This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to determine the prevalence of CE and AE echinococcosis and their epidemiological and clinical aspects in Iran.
METHODS: Electronic databases, including MEDLINE (via PubMed), SCOPUS, Web of Science,

Echinococcosis in humans is a zoonotic infection caused by larval stages of cestode species of the Echinococcus genus. In cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by Echinococcus granulosus, the liver is the first and the more frequent involved organ, followed by the lung. Heart, spleen, kidney and brain are usually less involved. The finding of a cyst in course of echinococcosis is usually fortuitous, during ultrasound examination, X-ray or CT. The Authors report 4 cases of human CE admitted to the Department of Infectious Diseases University of Naples "Federico II". Each case is peculiar both for

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis is a leading cause of preventable epilepsy in the developing world. Sustainable community-based interventions are urgently needed to control transmission of the causative parasite, Taenia solium. We examined the geospatial relationship between live pigs with visible cysticercotic cysts on their tongues and humans with adult intestinal tapeworm infection (taeniasis) in a rural village in northern Peru. The objective was to determine whether tongue-positive pigs could indicate high-risk geographic foci for taeniasis to guide targeted screening efforts. This approac

The influence of nonspecific immunomodulation on the course of experimental infection was examined in larval cestodosis (Mesocestoides corti) and ascaridosis (Ascaris suum) in mice. Immunosuppressive treatment (with azathioprine or hydrocortisone) resulted in a decrease of resistance in both models. The subsequent administration of T-activin to immunosuppressed mice led to the restoration of resistance to a level equal to that of untreated control mice. The administration of different immunomodulators partially protected mice against M. corti (T-activin, thymomodulin) or A. suum (T-activin, th

BACKGROUND: The raccoon (Procyon lotor), an introduced species in Europe, has exhibited significant population growth and successful adaptation to synanthropic environments over recent decades. In newly colonised areas, knowledge gaps remain regarding various aspects of raccoon ecology, including its behaviour, as well as associated parasites. The majority of pathogens identified in European raccoon populations to date possess documented epizootic and zoonotic potential. The objective of this study was to detect muscle parasites (Alaria spp., Sarcocystis spp., and Trichinella spp.) and to char

The larva of cestodes belonging to the Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) complex causes cystic echinococcosis (CE). It is a globally distributed zoonosis with significant economic and public health impact. The most immunogenic and specific Echinococcus-genus antigen for human CE diagnosis is antigen B (AgB), an abundant lipoprotein of the hydatid cyst fluid (HF). The AgB protein moiety (apolipoprotein) is encoded by five genes (AgB1-AgB5), which generate mature 8 kDa proteins (AgB8/1-AgB8/5). These genes seem to be differentially expressed among Echinococcus species. Since AgB immunoge

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a disease of the central nervous system (CNS) caused by the cestode Taenia solium. The infection exhibits a long asymptomatic phase, typically lasting 3 to 5 years, before the onset of the symptomatic phase. The severity of the symptoms is thought to be associated with the intensity of the inflammatory response elicited by the degenerating parasite. In contrast, the asymptomatic phase shows an absence of brain inflammation, which is presumably due to immunosuppressive effects of the live parasites. However, the host factors and/or pathways involved in in

Tapeworms (Cestoda) cause neglected diseases that can be fatal and are difficult to treat, owing to inefficient drugs. Here we present an analysis of tapeworm genome sequences using the human-infective species Echinococcus multilocularis, E. granulosus, Taenia solium and the laboratory model Hymenolepis microstoma as examples. The 115- to 141-megabase genomes offer insights into the evolution of parasitism. Synteny is maintained with distantly related blood flukes but we find extreme losses of genes and pathways that are ubiquitous in other animals, including 34 homeobox families and several d

Fish-borne trypanorhynch cestodes are socio-economically important marine parasites with veterinary and public health relevance, yet integrated molecular data from the eastern Mediterranean-Red Sea trans-boundary trading corridors remain scarce. This study utilized internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA barcoding to characterize trypanorhynch larvae infecting commercial teleosts imported to Jordan from Egyptian marine fisheries. Larvae were isolated from 36 examined fish spanning five species: Solea aegyptiaca Chabanaud, 1927, Thunnus spp. South, 1845, and Xiphias gladius Linnaeus, 1758 from t

Mice infected with the parasite Mesocestoides corti develop hypergammaglobulinemia, hepatomegaly, and splenomegaly. The immune response to M. corti infection is directed, in part, at molecules secreted by the organism. Two of these molecules have been shown to be hsp70 and hsp60 homologues. In this study it was found that incubation of splenocytes from infected animals with M. corti-secreted molecules or the isolated M. corti hsp70 results in the expansion of an unusual cell type with the morphology of large granular lymphocytes. The cell lines express Thy-1, CD4 (low), and CD45RB but lack TCR

Microtubules are non-covalent cylindrical polymers formed by alpha- and beta-tubulin heterodimer units, crucial for cell division, intracellular transport, motility and differentiation. This makes them very attractive pharmacological targets exploited to develop different drugs such as anthelmintics, antifungals, and antineoplastics. In this work, in order to establish an in vitro target-based screen to integrate to the search for new anthelmintics, we explored the extraction of native assembly-competent tubulin from two helminth parasites: Mesocestoides vogae tetrathyridia (syn. corti, Cestod
