Nutrition and dental decay in infants.

This review has cited evidence which indicates that a significant amount of human dental decay represents a specific infection due to S. mutans. The manner in which S. mutans colonizes the teeth, particularly the fissure surfaces, and the role that dietary sucrose plays in this process was discussed. The transmission of this infection from adults, usually the mother, to infants occurs shortly after the teeth erupt. This time period, which coincides with weaning, would be ideal for the introduction of preventive strategies that would involve both reduction in the usage of sucrose and the judici

Biofabrication of Pterocarpus marsupium extract-mediated CoFe2O4 and Ag-decorated CoFe2O4 nanoparticles for antioxidant and antibacterial applications: experimental and computational validation.

This study presents the green synthesis of cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) and extract-mediated (phytochemical-capped) CoFe2O4-Ag nanocomposites using aqueous bark extract of Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb. The silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are uniformly decorated on the surface of CoFe2O4. The characterisation results from X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated a cubic spinel structure, with a crystallite size of about 23.85 nm and Ag-induced lattice strain, yielding a lattice parameter of a 0 = 8.1662 Å. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak at 368 nm in the UV-vis spectroscopy spectrum revealed

Unveiling Fusobacterium nucleatum's role in colorectal cancer: the inflammatory microenvironment connection.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn), a gram-negative oral bacterium, has been implicated in promoting colorectal cancer (CRC) progression by modulating the inflammatory microenvironment. Recent studies have shown that gut microbiota imbalance plays a crucial role in CRC development, and Fn, specifically, has been found to exist in the intestine and exert pro-tumorigenic effects. However, the precise mechanisms underlying Fn-induced CRC progression remain elusive. METHODS: A systematic experimental strategy was adopted to explore the function of Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) in colorectal

Physicochemical salivary properties, Lactobacillus, mutans streptococci counts and early childhood caries in preschool children of Colombia.

Dental caries is a multifactorial disease, in which saliva has an important role. Saliva properties affect the growth of cariogenic microorganisms, so variations below threshold levels are considered risk factors for the development of dental caries. Salivary tests and microbiological counts of cariogenic bacteria are often used for clinical purposes in order to reveal problems that could explain caries development and have been evaluated in multiple studies, but these studies have mainly been carried out on adults. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify physicochemical salivary propertie

HIV infection and exposure is associated with increased cariogenic taxa, reduced taxonomic turnover, and homogenized spatial differentiation for the supragingival microbiome.

BACKGROUND: The oral microbiome consists of distinct microbial communities that colonize various ecological niches within the oral cavity, the composition of which are influenced by nutrient and substrate availability, host genetics, diet, behavior, age, and other diverse host and environmental factors. Unlike other densely populated human-associated microbial ecosystems (e.g., gut, urogenital), the oral microbiome is directly and frequently exposed to external influences, contributing to its relatively lower stability over time. In individuals with compromised immunity, such as those living w
