Effect of acupuncture and moxibustion combined with core stabilization training on the function of transverse abdominal muscle and pelvic floor muscle in women with postpartum pelvic pain.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion combined with core stabilization exercises (CSE) in enhancing the function of the transverse abdominal muscle (TAM) and pelvic floor muscle in postpartum women with pelvic pain. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 205 postpartum women with moderate to severe pelvic pain [visual analog scale (VAS) score ≥ 4] between January 2020 and January 2022. Participants were allocated to either a control group receiving CSE (n= 93) or a joint treatment group receiving CSE with acupuncture and moxibustion (n =112). Outcomes a

Loss of MLKL impairs abdominal aortic aneurysm development by attenuating smooth muscle cell necroptosis.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a life-threatening condition characterized by chronic vascular inflammation and progressive aortic wall deterioration. MLKL-driven necroptosis, a highly inflammatory form of cell death, has been implicated in several cardiovascular pathologies; however, its role in AAA remains incompletely understood. Using the aortic elastase-perfusion model, we investigated the impact of necroptosis deficiency on AAA progression in necroptosis-deficient transgenic mice, including RIPK1 kinase-inactive (Ripk1D138N/D138N), MLKL knockout (Mlkl-/-), and MLKL phospho-deficient (

Basal Tone, Muscle Memory and Denervation: Pathophysiological Foundations of Abdominal Wall Hernia Development and Recovery.

Modern abdominal wall hernia surgery is centered on the biomechanics of the fascial-aponeurotic framework and on intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) control; neuromuscular regulation of the wall remains outside perioperative planning. This review reframes the abdominal wall as a coordinated neuromuscular system and outlines a framework in which ventral herniation is hypothesized to represent a compensatory response to altered regulation of elevated IAP, while discoordinated contraction of the muscular layers is proposed as a potential predisposing factor. A structured literature search was performe

Age- and sex-specific relationships between bone mineral density, abdominal fat, and paravertebral muscle.

Bones, muscles and adipose tissue are important endocrine organs, exhibiting intricate interactions. Whether the relationships between bone mineral density (BMD), abdominal fat and paravertebral muscles vary by sex and age remains unclear. The objective of this study was to examine the characteristics of sex- and age-related differences in body composition and to explore the correlations between BMD, abdominal fat, and paravertebral muscles. Lumbar trabecular BMD of L1-L3 vertebrae, visceral fat area (VFA), subcutaneous fat area (SFA), cross-sectional area (CSA) and intermuscular adipose tissu

Severe Abdominal Pain due to Cough-Induced Internal Oblique Muscle Hematoma: A Case Report.

Spontaneous internal oblique muscle hematomas are rare and may closely mimic acute abdominal emergencies. This case emphasizes the importance of including them in the differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain. Clinicians should consider this diagnosis in patients with cough-related abdominal pain to prevent misdiagnosis and unnecessary surgical interventions.

A Rare Case of Primary Posterior Abdominal Wall Muscle Hydatid Cyst With Thoracolumbar Spinal Extension.

Primary intramuscular hydatid cysts are uncommon due to the contractile nature of muscles and their lactic acid content. Hydatid cysts with spinal extension are sometimes seen with primary vertebral body involvement. Our patient presented with a slow-growing posterior abdominal wall mass, and upon magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), it was revealed to be several cystic lesions in the abdomen wall with extension through the neural foramina into the spinal canal. The key differentials for spinal canal masses with neural foraminal expansion and muscle involvement are peripheral nerve sheath tumors.

Macrophage-derived GSDMD promotes abdominal aortic aneurysm and aortic smooth muscle cells pyroptosis.

Macrophage is a vital factor in determining the fate of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The crosstalk between macrophage and other cells plays a crucial role in the development of aneurysm. Gasdermin D (GSDMD) is a vital executive protein of pyroptosis, which is a novel programmed cell death associated with inflammation. In this study, we identified aortic macrophage as the main expressing cell of GSDMD in AAA. Using Gsdmd-/-ApoE-/- mouse and AAV-F4/80-shGSDMD, we demonstrated the potential role of macrophage-derived GSDMD in AAA and aortic pyroptosis induced by Ang II in vivo. In vitro exper

Metformin Improves the Function of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Patient-Derived Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells.

OBJECTIVE: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a cardiovascular risk factor. Paradoxically, a decreased risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) presence and growth rate is described among patients with T2DM, associated with metformin use. This study aimed to investigate the effect of metformin on AAA patient-derived aortic smooth muscle cell (SMC) function. METHODS: Aortic biopsies were obtained from patients with AAA (n = 21) and controls (n = 17) during surgery. The SMCs of non-pathological aortic controls, non-diabetic patients with AAA, and diabetic patients with AAA were cultured from exp

Abdominal Muscle Fasciculations and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Diagnosis in a Patient Unable to Perform Sit-Ups.

While performing sit-ups, a 70-year-old man was unable to lift his upper body. The abdominal skin reflex was absent, and abdominal ultrasonography showed intermittent, irregular, and localized muscle twitches of the abdominal muscles. Further, electromyography (EMG) detected widespread fasciculations. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was diagnosed. Muscle ultrasonography (MU) is useful in detecting fasciculations. This technique allows for repeated non-invasive imaging and the assessment of an expansive range of muscles in real-time. It also detects deep abdominal muscles, which are difficu

TRPV1 inhibits smooth muscle cell phenotype switching in a mouse model of abdominal aortic aneurysm.

The natural outcome of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is that of slow progression and ultimate rupture, then a life-threatening hemorrhage consequently. Ruptured AAA is a dramatic catastrophe and constitutes one of the leading causes of acute death in elderly men. However, the mechanism of AAA is still unclear. Transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV) family has protective effects in cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we revealed the expression and the pathogenesis of TRPV1 in a mouse AAA model. The results presented here identify TRPV1 could be a potential therapeutic target for AA

Contraction of the transverse abdominal muscle in pelvic girdle pain is enhanced by pain provocation during the task.

BACKGROUND: Understanding of the pathogenesis of pain in the lumbopelvic region remains a challenge. It is suggested that lumbopelvic pain is related to decreased contraction of the transverse abdominal muscles (TrA). OBJECTIVE: To investigate how pain provoked by a task influences TrA contraction during that task. DESIGN: A case-control cross-sectional study. METHOD: We recruited 40 non-pregnant women with persistent pregnancy-related posterior pelvic girdle pain (PGP) and 33 parous women (healthy controls) without PGP. TrA thickness was measured by ultrasound at various levels of bilatera

Effectiveness of diaphragmatic repair using an abdominal muscle flap in patients with recurrent congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Recurrent congenital diaphragmatic hernia (Re-CDH) is a well-known complication of CDH repair. Although surgical treatment is required for Re-CDH, the question regarding which technique is the optimal treatment has not yet been elucidated. We performed a repair using an abdominal muscle flap (AMF) for Re-CDH and herein report our experience. PATIENTS AND RESULTS: Four patients using AMF had left Re-CDH. The patient's age at operation was around 1 year old in all patients. In the first repair during the neonatal period, a Gore-Tex patch was required for the large defect in

A retrospective comparison of abdominal muscle strength following breast reconstruction with a free TRAM or DIEP flap.

Abdominal weakness is a known potential complication of breast reconstruction with a pedicled or free TRAM flap. It has been presumed that the DIEP flap, which involves no muscle resection, does not compromise abdominal muscle strength but little objective research exists to substantiate this. The aims of this retrospective study were to compare abdominal muscle strength following free TRAM flap and DIEP flap, to compare both groups with a control group and to establish the effect of both procedures on functional activities. Fifty women (23 with a DIEP flap, 27 with a free TRAM flap) plus 32 n

The Metabolite Differences in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Revealed by Untargeted Metabolomics.

Background: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a vascular disease with a high mortality rate upon rupture (85-90%). Surgical repair remains the most effective intervention, whereas pharmacological treatments to prevent aneurysm expansion or rupture are limited. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) play a crucial role in AAA pathogenesis, and metabolic dysregulation is increasingly recognized as a contributor to disease progression. This study investigated metabolic changes in VSMCs and their association with AAA pathology using untargeted metabolomics. Methods: Angiotensin II (Ang II) was used
