Addictive use of digital devices in young children: Associations with delay discounting, self-control and academic performance.

The use of smartphones, tablets and laptops/PCs has become ingrained in adults' and increasingly in children's lives, which has sparked a debate about the risk of addiction to digital devices. Previous research has linked specific use of digital devices (e.g. online gaming, smartphone screen time) with impulsive behavior in the context of intertemporal choice among adolescents and adults. However, not much is known about children's addictive behavior towards digital devices and its relationship to personality factors and academic performance. This study investigated the associations between ad

Motivation towards medical career choice and academic performance in Latin American medical students: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Motivation in medical students is positively associated with learning strategies. However, the evidence of a direct relationship between motivation and performance is vague. The objective of this study is to determine if the motivation that pushed students to choose the medical career is associated with their academic performance during their university years. METHODS: The study was conducted in 4,290 medical students from 10 countries in Latin America. The "Attribution Scale of General Achievement Motivation" was used to evaluate their general performance. The "Medical motivati

Insomnia in medical students during an examination period: associations with depression, dysfunctional sleep beliefs, and academic performance.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is common among medical students and is linked to impaired mental health and academic functioning. Medical students are exposed to persistent psychosocial stress, yet the extent to which state factors (e.g., stress, mood) versus trait factors (e.g., chronotype, sleep beliefs) contribute to insomnia severity is unclear. While dysfunctional sleep beliefs are relatively stable cognitive traits, they remain amenable to targeted interventions. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey at a German medical school during a fourth year exam period. Students completed the Inso

Social media use motives and academic performance among Saudi medical students: the mediating role of perceived stress.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research has documented associations between social media use and perceived stress. However, the psychological mechanisms underlying these associations, particularly the role of perceived stress in the relationship between social media use motives and academic performance among medical students, remain largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationships between social media use motives and academic performance among Saudi medical students and investigated whether perceived stress (perceived helplessness and lack of self-efficacy) mediates these r

Does Daytime Sleepiness Moderate the Relationship Between Working Memory and Academic Performance in Schoolchildren? A Pilot Study.

Academic performance in adolescence is influenced by both cognitive capacity and physiological factors such as sleepiness. However, the interaction between these dimensions remains understudied. This pilot study examined whether daytime sleepiness moderates the relationship between working memory and academic achievement in a sample of 601 schoolchildren aged 11 to 17 years. Participants completed a digital visuospatial working memory task and self-reported their daytime sleepiness using the Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale (PDSS). Academic performance was assessed through official grades in

The Association between Academic Performance and Entry-to-Practice Milestones within a Co-Operative Education PharmD Program.

Research on associations between student performance in pharmacy programs and entry-to-practice milestones has been limited in Canada and in programs using a co-operative (co-op) education model. Co-op exposes students to a variety of opportunities both within direct patient care roles and in non-traditional roles for pharmacists, such as policy, advocacy, insurance, research, and the pharmaceutical industry. The purpose of this research is to analyze associations between student grades and evaluations achieved in the University of Waterloo (UW) Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) co-op program and su

Effect of Extracurricular After-School Physical Activities on Academic Performance of Schoolchildren: A Cluster Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: The beneficial effects of increasing outdoor physical activity time on children's myopia onset and physical well-being are widely acknowledged. However, in countries with competitive educational systems, such as China, parents and school administrators may be relatively reluctant to increase the extracurricular physical activity time for children due to concerns that this action will compromise children's academic performance. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether additional extracurricular physical activity time after school compromises the academic performance of schoolchildren. DE

Effect of Eyeglasses on Student Academic Performance: What Matters? Evidence from a Randomized Controlled Trial in China.

Although eyeglasses have been considered a cost-effective way to combat myopia, the empirical evidence of its impacts on improving learning outcomes is inconsistent. This paper provides empirical evidence examining the effect of providing eyeglasses on academic performance between provinces with a different economic level in western China. Overall, we find a significant impact in Intention-to-Treat analysis and a large and significant local average treatment effect of providing free eyeglasses to students in the poor province but not in the other. The difference in impact between the two provi

Early delay of gratification predicts later inhibitory control and academic performance in children with prenatal alcohol exposure.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) affects 2-5% of the children in the United States. In the preschool age-range, inhibitory deficits frequently manifest as impaired ability to delay gratification, which is associated with deficits in cognitive flexibility in these children. The goal of this longitudinal study was to determine whether the ability to delay gratification in preschool children with FASD is (1) associated with broader manifestations in temperament and behavior; (2) predictive of later inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility and working memory in middle childhood; and (3) pre

Correlates for academic performance and school functioning among youths with and without persistent attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Childhood attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with academic underachievement and school dysfunction. Little is known whether such association varies with the persistence of ADHD symptoms. The authors investigated school functioning among youths with and without persistent ADHD and identified the clinical correlates for school functioning in a large sample of 333 youths with persistent ADHD, 166 with non-persistent ADHD, and 266 without ADHD. The participants and their mothers received structured interviews for diagnosis of ADHD and other psychiatric conditions accordi
