This study investigated the removal of micropollutants using polyurethane sponge as attached-growth carrier. Batch experiments demonstrated that micropollutants could adsorb to non-acclimatized sponge cubes to varying extents. Acclimatized sponge showed significantly enhanced removal of some less hydrophobic compounds (log D<2.5), such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, naproxen, and estriol, as compared with non-acclimatized sponge. The results for bench-scale sponge-based moving bed bioreactor (MBBR) system elucidated compound-specific variation in removal, ranging from 25.9% (carbamazepine) to 96

Studies of ventilatory response to high altitudes have occupied an important position in respiratory physiology. This review summarizes recent studies in Tibetan high-altitude residents that collectively challenge the prior consensus that lifelong high-altitude residents ventilate less than acclimatized newcomers do as the result of acquired 'blunting' of hypoxic ventilatory responsiveness. These studies indicate that Tibetans ventilate more than Andean high-altitude natives residing at the same or similar altitudes (PET[CO(2)]) in Tibetans=29.6+/-0.8 vs. Andeans=31.0+/-1.0, P<0.0002 at approx

Highland Tibetan cattle have evolved unique hypoxic adaptation capabilities from their lowland ancestors; however, the mechanisms that distinguish short-term acclimatization from long-term genetic adaptation remain poorly understood. In this study, we integrated hematological assays and multi-organ transcriptomic analyses across three groups: highland Tibetan cattle (long-term adaptation), highland-acclimatized Holsteins (short-term acclimatization), and lowland Holsteins (controls). Hematologically, highland-acclimatized Holsteins displayed elevated red blood cell count, hemoglobin level, and

Hypobaric hypoxia, the hallmark of a high altitude environment, has important physiological effects on both the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in order to maintain a balance between oxygen demand and supply. This dynamic of acclimatization is influenced both by the level of altitude and the speed of progression, but is also very individual with a wide spectrum of responses and sensitivities. This wide range of responses is associated with nonspecific symptoms characterising acute mountain sickness and high-altitude cerebral or pulmonary oedema. This article reviews the current knowledg

When a sea-level resident ascends to a high altitude, his breathing immediately increases because of hypoxic stimulation of the peripheral chemoreceptors. In many species the aortic bodies are relatively unimportant in this response compared to the carotid bodies. When the subject stays at that altitude, his breathing increases progressively in the next few hours and days in a process termed ventilatory acclimatization and does not immediately return to control levels when hypoxia is terminated. Evidence is summarized indicating that this chronic process does not depend on the peripheral chemo

In many endocrine systems, circulating factors or hormones are not released continuously, but are secreted as a discrete pulse in response to a releasing factor. Single-point sampling measures are inadequate to fully understand the biological significance of the secretory pattern of pulsatile hormones either under normal physiologic conditions or during conditions of dysregulation. Luteinizing hormone (LH) is synthesized by the anterior pituitary gonadotrope cells and secreted in a pulsatile pattern which requires frequent collection of blood samples for pulse assessment. This has not been pos

Chronic hypoxic acclimatization modifies ventilatory reflexes arising from carotid body stimulation. To explore this, the effects of in vivo chronic hypoxia on membrane currents were quantified in chemoreceptive carotid body glomus cells. Pregnant rats were maintained in either normoxia (NORM: inspired oxygen tension 141 mmHg), or hypoxia (CHX: inspired oxygen tension 80 mmHg) from day 3 of gestation, to day 5-10 postpartum. Whole cell patch clamp recordings were then made from the mechanically and enzymatically dissociated carotid body glomus cells of the rat pups (NORM: 41 cells, CHX: 36 cel

Acute exposure to high altitude can cause acute altitude illnesses and is associated with impaired cognitive and physical performance. The most effective preventive strategies currently recommended include environmental acclimatization (slow ascent and/or pre-acclimatization) or pharmacological support of acclimatization using acetazolamide. However, these strategies are not practical for high-altitude exposures that require rapid and unplanned ascent, high physical and mental performance, such as rescue missions or military operations. Dexamethasone and other modulators of the glucocorticoid

Heatstroke is a serious health concern in Japan. To reduce heatstroke risk, the government of Japan implemented the "Heatstroke Alert" nationwide in 2021, employing the wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) as a criterion. Although the WBGT is a useful meteorological indicator for assessing the risk of heatstroke, other important meteorological indicators must also be investigated. Therefore, using a random forest approach, this study analyzed the relative importance of several meteorological indicators, including those representing heat acclimatization, for each of the 47 Japanese prefectures. Millions of people visit high-altitude regions annually and more than 80 million live permanently above 2,500 m. Acute high-altitude exposure can trigger high-altitude illnesses (HAIs), including acute mountain sickness (AMS), high-altitude cerebral oedema (HACE) and high-altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE). Chronic mountain sickness (CMS) can affect high-altitude resident populations worldwide. The prevalence of acute HAIs varies according to acclimatization status, rate of ascent and individual susceptibility. AMS, characterized by headache, nausea, dizziness and fatigue, is usually benign and

High-altitude (HA) environments have adverse effects on the normal functioning body of people accustomed to living at low altitudes because of the change in barometric pressure which causes decrease in the amount of oxygen leading to hypobaric hypoxia. Sustained exposure to hypoxia has adverse effects on body weight, muscle structure and exercise capacity, mental functioning, and sleep quality. The most important step of acclimatization is the hyperventilation which is achieved by hypoxic ventilatory response of the peripheral chemoreceptors. Hyperventilation results in increase in arterial ca

Whether cerebral pressure-flow relationship directional sensitivity, which represents the attenuated changes in cerebral blood velocity in response to transient increases, compared with decreases, in mean arterial pressure (MAP), is altered in lowlanders at high altitude or differs between lowlanders and Sherpa (a well-adapted highlander population of the Nepalese Khumbu region) is unknown. Both MAP and middle cerebral artery mean blood velocity (MCAv) were recorded continuously during 5-min repeated squat-stands (RSS) at 0.05 Hz and 0.10 Hz at sea level (n = 10), initial exposure to high-alti

Numerous factors involved in general homeostasis are able to modulate ventilation. Classically, this comprises several kind of molecules, including neurotransmitters and steroids that are necessary for fine tuning ventilation under different conditions such as sleep, exercise, and acclimatization to high altitude. Recently, however, we have found that erythropoietin (Epo), the main regulator of red blood cell production, influences both central (brainstem) and peripheral (carotid bodies) respiratory centers when the organism is exposed to hypoxic conditions. Here, we summarize the effect of Ep

The role of carotid body chemoreceptors in ventilatory acclimatization to hypoxia, i.e., the progressive, time-dependent increase in ventilation during the first several hours or days of hypoxic exposure, is not well understood. The purpose of this investigation was to characterize the effects of acute and prolonged (up to 4 h) hypoxia on carotid body chemoreceptor discharge frequency in anesthetized goats. The goat was chosen for study because of its well-documented and rapid acclimatization to hypoxia. The response of the goat carotid body to acute progressive isocapnic hypoxia was similar t

Rationale: Central sleep apnea (CSA) is pervasive during sleep at high altitude, disproportionately impacting men and associated with increased peripheral chemosensitivity. Objectives: We aimed to assess whether biological sex affects loop gain (LGn) and CSA severity during sleep over 9-10 days of acclimatization to 3,800 m. We hypothesized that CSA severity would worsen with acclimatization in men but not in women because of greater increases in LGn in men. Methods: Sleep studies were collected from 20 (12 male) healthy participants at low altitude (1,130 m, baseline) and after ascent to (nig

Industrialization and urbanization have led to increasingly severe impacts on environmental sustainability, through the release of heavy metals into the environment. This study employed a sustainable approach involving metallic treatment and an acclimatization process to enhance the resilience of the microbe Bacillus sp. SSAU2 against Hg (II) toxicity. The findings revealed that acclimatization at 0.05 ppm Hg (II) and 0.2 ppm Fe (III) treatment significantly improved Hg (II) tolerance, with the 300% increase in the Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) achieved through a composite treatment c

Hypoxia isolated to the carotid body (CB) can induce time-dependent progressive hyperventilation (ventilatory acclimatization) in the absence of brain hypoxia. The studies reported in this paper were designed to determine if CNS hypoxia in the absence of CB hypoxia would affect ventilation over a 4 h period. In addition, the effect of 4 h of CNS hypoxia on the ventilatory responses to central chemoreceptor stimulation and to isolated CB stimulation were also determined. The studies were carried out in awake goats with CB blood gases controlled by an extracorporeal circuit while systemic (CNS)

Sleep and respiration data from two French medical high altitude expeditions (Annapurna 4,800 m and Mt Sajama 6,542 m) are presented. Difficulties in maintaining sleep and a SWS decrease were found with periodic breathing (PB) during both non-REM and REM sleep. Extent of PB varied considerably among subjects and was not correlated to the number of arousals but to the intercurrent wakefulness duration. There was a positive correlation between the time spent in PB and the individual hypoxic ventilatory drive. The relation between PB, nocturnal desaturation, and mountain sickness intensity are di

On June 30, 1981, a young, apparently healthy, obese white male suffered a fatal heatstroke. This was the beginning of summer in southern Ohio, when mid-day temperatures can reach into the 30s degrees C (90s degrees F) and the humidity can climb above 70%. The predisposition of the individual in terms of acclimatization, physical size and dietary intake, along with strong motivation to perform well on a job requiring a heavy workload in a hot environment, pushed him beyond his physiologic capacity. Of those people who attended him, only professional rescue personnel recognized the illness and
