The Wide Range Achievement Test-4 Reading subtest "holds" in HIV-infected individuals.

BACKGROUND: In order to detect HIV-associated neurocognitive decline, it is important to accurately estimate individuals' premorbid levels of cognitive functioning. Although previous studies have operated under the assumption that word reading tests are valid and stable indicators of premorbid abilities in HIV infection, studies of other populations have found that this is not always the case. Therefore, it is important to empirically examine the validity of word reading tests as estimates of premorbid functioning specifically within the HIV population. METHOD: The Wide Range Achievement Test

Anatomical variations affect radial artery spasm and procedural achievement of transradial cardiac catheterization.

Transradial cardiac catheterization (TRCC) has unique technical challenges such as access difficulty related to anatomical variations and/or radial artery (RA) spasm. We sought to evaluate the incidence of anatomical variations of the RA and whether they would affect RA spasm and procedural achievement of TRCC. A total of 744 consecutive patients who underwent TRCC were analyzed by routine radial arteriography. Anatomical variations were defined as abnormal origin of the RA and/or radioulnar loop and/or tortuous configuration. RA spasm was defined as >75 % stenosis at first radial arteriograph

Lifetime achievement from a brain-adrenal perspective: on the CRF-urocortin-glucocorticoid balance.

This contribution dedicated to Wylie Vale is focused on the action of the glucocorticoid hormone aimed to counterbalance the stress response orchestrated by the corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF) and urocortin (Ucn) family of peptides. It appears that the release and action of these stress hormones themselves are subjected to intrinsic self-regulatory feedback loops that operate as checks and balances in stress adaptation. One of these feedback loops is operated by the mineralocorticoid (MR) and glucocorticoid receptors (GR) that mediate in complementary fashion the action of endogenous cor

Implicit motive profile of treatment-seeking opiate users: high affiliation and low achievement.

Research on basic human motives (achievement, affiliation, and power) encoded at the emotional level recently returned to the forefront of scientific research. To date, there are only a few studies on the pattern of implicit motives of substance users, so the present study examined opiate users participating in methadone maintenance treatment (N = 80) along these dimensions, comparing them to 40 non-substance users. Participants were asked to create stories on the basis of the pictures of the Thematic Apperception Test. The stories were analyzed using the content analysis method of David Winte

Longitudinal mediators of achievement in mathematics and reading in typical and atypical development.

Longitudinal studies of neurodevelopmental disorders that are diagnosed at or before birth and are associated with specific learning difficulties at school-age provide one method for investigating developmental precursors of later-emerging academic disabilities. Spina bifida myelomeningocele (SBM) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with particular problems in mathematics, in contrast to well-developed word reading. Children with SBM (n=30) and typically developing children (n=35) were used to determine whether cognitive abilities measured at 36 and 60 months of age mediated the effect

Patient-reported goal achievement after antimuscarinic treatment in patients with overactive bladder symptoms.

AIM: Standardised traditional outcome measures may fail to address factors that are important to patients and address irrelevant factors. Aim of this study was to assess patient-reported goals and goal achievement (GA) in the antimuscarinic treatment for overactive bladder (OAB) patients. METHODS: Men and women aged ≥ 18 years with OAB symptoms were eligible for the study. Treatment began with a dose of 10 mg oxybutynin, to be increased if necessary to 30 mg. Before treatment, each patient's primary treatment goal was identified. After 12-week treatment, patients reported GA using a Likert sc

Associations of ethnicity and SES with IQ and achievement in spina bifida meningomyelocele.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated whether the phenotypic pattern of higher verbal than nonverbal IQ in children with spina bifida meningomyelocele (SBM) is consistent across subgroups differing in ethnicity and SES. We also explored the relation of cognitive and academic performance. METHODS: Non-Hispanic White (n = 153) and Hispanic (n = 80) children with SBM received the Stanford Binet Test of Intelligence-IV and achievement subtests of the Woodcock-Johnson. Parents completed questionnaires assessing the family environment [socioeconomic status (SES), resources, and educational opportunities]. RESU

The use of distilled water in the achievement of local hemostasis during surgery.

Distilled water is used worldwide to check on hemostasis at the end of pelvic oncological operations. Nevertheless, reports about this method are lacking. The aim of this study was to explain the method and to discuss possible side effects. After the addition of distilled water to the surgically exposed pelvis, rapid lysis of erythrocytes results in a transparent fluid in which a small source of bleeding is easily recognizable. A possible side effect of the lavage might be contribution to the formation of peritoneal adhesions by confusing the abdominal defence system. Systemic side effects are

Maternal IQ, child IQ, behavior, and achievement in urban 5-7 year olds.

In one study of children in 27 families with maternal retardation, those children with higher intelligence quotient (IQ) were more likely to have multiple behavior problems than those with lower IQ. If true, this result would affect clinical practice, but it has not been replicated. Because the setting of the initial observation is similar to the setting of childhood lead poisoning, we attempted a replication using data from the Treatment of Lead-Exposed Children (TLC) study, in which 780 children aged 12-33 mo with blood lead levels 20-44 microg/dL were randomized to either succimer treatment

Relationship between home literacy environment and reading achievement in children with reading disabilities.

Past research has indicated that a significant relationship exists between young children's early home literacy environment and their reading-related skills. However, this relationship has rarely been investigated among older children with reading disabilities (RD). In the present study, the relationship between parent and child home literacy activities and children's academic functioning was investigated with a sample of 65 elementary-age children with RD. The results indicated that children's home literacy activities were not significantly related to any of their academic abilities, whereas

Word identification in adults with mild mental retardation: does IQ influence reading achievement?

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between word identification and intelligence in adults with mild mental retardation (IQ < 80). METHOD: A standardized evaluation was administered to 67 adults with mild mental retardation. The evaluation included a psychiatric interview, the WAIS-R, and a 2-h interview with a speech therapist and reading tests. RESULTS: Causes of mental retardation were diverse in the sample, and IQ scores ranged from 43 to 79 (mean score = 64). All subjects exhibited reading impairment, including 69% with severe impairment. No subject with an IQ score under 65 was able

Academic achievement and psychological adjustment in short children. The National Cooperative Growth Study.

Limited information is available on the educational and behavioral functioning of short children. Through 27 participating medical centers, we administered a battery of psychologic tests to 166 children referred for growth hormone (GH) treatment (5 to 16 years) who were below the third percentile for height (mean height = -2.7 SD). The sample consisted of 86 children with isolated growth-hormone deficiency (GHD) and 80 children with idiopathic short stature (ISS). Despite average intelligence, absence of significant family dysfunction, and advantaged social background, a large number of childr

The effects of early middle ear pathology on auditory perception and academic achievement.

Two groups of children were compared to determine the effects of early middle ear pathology on the development of auditory perceptual skills and academic achievement. The conductive loss (CL) group consisted of 15 children, aged seven to nine years, with histories of middle ear pathology. The normal control (NC) group was matched for age, sex, and socioeconomic status and had negative histories of middle ear pathology. Both groups were from a suburban community of primarily mild socioeconomic status. A test battery consisting of 12 auditory perceptual tests as well as measures of academic achi

Personal resource gains: Effective coping builds academic buoyancy, and academic buoyancy builds achievement.

BACKGROUND: Academic buoyancy is conceptualized as students' capacity to cope with academic challenges. Studies that examine how academic buoyancy and coping responses are reciprocally related, or that include relations with achievement, are lacking. AIMS: The study examined reciprocal relations among academic buoyancy, coping and achievement. SAMPLE: The sample comprised students aged 16-19 years in upper secondary education. At the first wave of data collection, there were 533 students (138 male, mean age = 16.4 years). METHODS: Data were collected in five waves over two school years. Ach
