Contralateral auditory stimulation and otoacoustic emissions: a review of basic data in humans.

The influence of contralateral auditory stimulation on otoacoustic emissions (OAE), spontaneous OAE, evoked OAE and acoustic distortion products, can be summarized as follows: (1) alteration (mainly a decrease) of OAE amplitude; (2) alteration of response spectrum (upward shift frequency of SOAE); (3) alteration of phase; (4) effect dependent on intensity of contralateral stimulation; (5) effect inversely dependent on intensity of ipsilateral stimulation; (6) frequency specificity of the suppressive effect. Involvement of the medial olivocochlear bundle is highly probable but one cannot exclud

High-fidelity transcranial ultrasound multi-focal stimulation via physics-aware hologram technique.

INTRODUCTION: Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) is an emerging non-invasive neuromodulation modality that offers deep brain access with high spatial precision. However, its broader application is limited by the difficulty of reliably generating complex transcranial acoustic fields, particularly for multi-target stimulation through the skull. These limitations can lead to focal distortion, off-target exposure, and reduced reliability of neuromodulation outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here, we introduce a physics-aware thickness-only acoustic hologram (TOAH) technique for precise trans

Influence of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAE) on acoustic distortion product input/output functions: does the medial efferent system act differently in the vicinity of an SOAE?

Otoacoustic emission (OAE) generation mechanisms reside in the active micromechanical properties of the organ of Corti, and especially in the outer hair cells (OHCs). OHCs are strongly innervated by medial efferent olivo-cochlear fibres. Decrease of the intensity of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TOAEs) and modification of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) during acoustic stimulation of the contralateral ear have already been shown in humans. Similar results were obtained in guinea pigs with a decrease of 2F1-F2 acoustic distortion products (DPOAEs) and a suppression of the

A physiological study of acoustic blinking reflex in the cat.

Blinking reflex was elicited by acoustic stimulus to investigate the reflex pathway in the encéphalo isolé cat. Reflex responses were recorded using electromyography (EMG) of the orbicularis oculi. The investigation was as follows: After stimulation by a loud click sound, the EMGs of the orbicularis oculi were elicited bilaterally. Latencies were 17-20 msec on the ipsilateral side, and 19-21 msec on the contralateral side. By electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerve in the cochlea and the acoustic nerve EMGs were also obtained. The latencies of the electrical stimulation responses correl

Factors associated with hearing loss in a normal-hearing guinea pig model of Hybrid cochlear implants.

The Hybrid cochlear implant (CI), also known as Electro-Acoustic Stimulation (EAS), is a new type of CI that preserves residual acoustic hearing and enables combined cochlear implant and hearing aid use in the same ear. However, 30-55% of patients experience acoustic hearing loss within days to months after activation, suggesting that both surgical trauma and electrical stimulation may cause hearing loss. The goals of this study were to: 1) determine the contributions of both implantation surgery and EAS to hearing loss in a normal-hearing guinea pig model; 2) determine which cochlear structur

Specific Influences of Early Acoustic Environments on Cochlear Hair Cells in Postnatal Mice.

The auditory function develops and matures after birth in many mammalian species. After hearing onset, environmental sounds exert profound and long-term effects on auditory functions. However, the effects of the acoustic environment on the functional development of the peripheral auditory system, especially the cochlear sensory hair cells, are still unclear. In the present study, we exposed mouse pups to frequency-enriched acoustic environments in postnatal days 0-14. The results indicated that the acoustic environment significantly decreased the threshold of the auditory brainstem response in

Sound level context modulates neural activity in the human brainstem.

Optimal perception requires adaptation to sounds in the environment. Adaptation involves representing the acoustic stimulation history in neural response patterns, for example, by altering response magnitude or latency as sound-level context changes. Neurons in the auditory brainstem of rodents are sensitive to acoustic stimulation history and sound-level context (often referred to as sensitivity to stimulus statistics), but the degree to which the human brainstem exhibits such neural adaptation is unclear. In six electroencephalography experiments with over 125 participants, we demonstrate th

The protective effect of the sympathetic nervous system against acoustic trauma.

OBJECTIVE: the cochlea is innervated by the sympathetic nerve fibers. However, the functions of those fibers in the cochlea are still controversial. The present study was designed to determine whether the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) exerts a protective or enhancing effect on acoustic trauma. METHODS: acoustic overstimulation (either of 110, 115, or 130 dB SPL for 10 min) was performed in guinea pigs during electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral cervical SNS, after its surgical elimination or in the non-treated condition. The threshold shift of the compound action potential (CAP) from

[Cochlear implantation (problems, methods, perspectives)].

We suppose that topical problems of cochlear implantation comprise preoperative diagnosis of the acoustic nerve condition, programmimg of the speech processor using objective evaluation of acoustic function, design of new strategies of stimulation of speech processors and criteria of choice for existing strategies. In solving the above problems, the following methods are of special importance: registration of electrically evoked potential of acoustic nerve action (EPAN), registration of electrically evoked acoustic potentials (EAEP), registration of electrically evoked reflex of the musculus s

Stapedius reflex in patients with an inner ear prosthesis.

The stapedius reflex elicited by electrical stimulation was investigated in 21 deaf individuals supplied with an inner ear prosthesis. All patients were implanted with the Vienna cochlear implant using intra or extracochlear electrodes. Analog stimulation with sinus bursts of various durations (25, 50, 100, 300, 500 ms) and frequencies (125, 500, 1000, 2000 Hz) was used. The time course of the contralateral acoustic reflex was monitored using a fast-response impedance meter. The stapedius reflex was observed in about half of the cases. Reflex threshold was observed at a stimulation level close

SPET monitoring of auditory cortex activation by electric stimulation in a patient with auditory brainstem implant.

Auditory cortex activation following multifrequency acoustic stimulation has been evaluated by means of single photon emission tomography (SPET) in one patient before and after an auditory brainstem implant (ABI). No activation could be observed after acoustic stimulation before ABI. After ABI stimulation in the coronal and axial slices, the activation within the temporal cortex contralateral to the stimulated ear was twice (43.76%) that of normal controls (23.94 +/- 2.74%). This marked difference was not present in other selected cortical auditory areas (homolateral temporal, homolateral and

Inputs from the cochlea and the inferior colliculus converge on olivocochlear neurones.

Medial olivocochlear (MOC) neurones, located in the superior olivary complex, can suppress cochlear gain by their action on the cochlear outer hair cells. Inputs from the contralateral cochlea and the inferior colliculus (IC) have been separately shown to increase activity of MOC neurones. In this study we have investigated in guinea-pigs under barbiturate anaesthesia the interactions between these two inputs by combining electrical stimulation of the IC with acoustic stimulation of the contralateral cochlea. Electrical stimulation of the IC resulted in a significant suppression of the amplitu

[Effect of narcotics on impulse conduction in the afferent pathways of visceral nerves].

In tests set up on cats immobilized with pyraxolone and anatruxonium the effect of non-inhalation narcotics on the evoked potentials of the cortex and subcortical structures with visceral and also somatic, acoustic and photo-stimulation was studied. With stimuli of different modality sodium ethaminal was found to inhibit evoked potentials of the cerebral hemispheres, diencephalon and midbrain cortex. Hexabarbital sodium suppressed biopotentials in specific, associative and non- specific brain structures in the event of visceral and somatic stimulation. Viadril enhanced the amplitude of potenti

Impact of Vagal Nerve Stimulation on Objective Vocal Quality, a Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) on the vocal quality using the dysphonia severity index (DSI). It was hypothesized that the objective vocal quality and other vocal characteristics are disordered in comparison with an age- and gender-matched control group. In addition, the acoustic vocal parameters were compared during three conditions: at rest, during normal stimulation, and raised stimulation. A significant relation between the amount of stimulation and the presence of disturbed acoustic parameters was hypothesized. METHODS: S

Patch Clamp Technology for Focused Ultrasonic (FUS) Neuromodulation.

Electrical stimulation of neural tissue, such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) and cortical stimulation, is widely applied therapeutic neuromodulation techniques for neurologic disorders. Penetrating electrodes (e.g., microwires and silicon probes) for DBS provide high spatial resolution, but are invasive, displacing neural tissue, producing acute insertion trauma, and potentially eliciting a foreign-body response. Surface electrodes, while less invasive, cannot generate a highly localized electrical field. Motivated by these limitations, the goal of this chapter is to provide a protocol to run

Grafting and electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve in cats.

The effect of implanting wire electrodes into the cochlea is limited by the deficit of nerve fibers in most diseases of the cochlea. Therefore, in a series of experiments it was tried, for the first time, to direct new outspreading nerve fibres into the afferent acoustic nerve by grafting a motor nerve to it. A second series of experiments should demonstrate the possibility of direct electrical stimulation of the eighs nerve by implanting wire electrodes via the transoccipital approach. The electrically evoked potentials, recorded at the auditory cortex, were compaired to potentials evoked by

Development of acoustic systems for ultrasound attenuation measurement in polydimethylsiloxane.

Ultrasound absorption by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) can have a significant impact on the acoustic radiation force needed for the stimulation of cells in an organ-on-a-chip. Hence, finding the PDMS attenuation coefficient is the key to determining the fraction of absorbed acoustic energy in microfluidic systems. To measure the attenuation coefficient of PDMS, two methods were compared: a vector network analyzer and a pulse transmission method. Ten PDMS samples with thicknesses ranging from 2.5 to 18.5 mm were tested both before and after 24 h water immersion. The attenuation coefficient of PDM

Measurement of the Electrically Evoked Stapedial Reflex Response with Wideband Acoustic Reflectance Measurement.

BACKGROUND: The electrically evoked stapedial reflex threshold (ESRT) has been shown to be a good predictor of upper stimulation level for cochlear implant recipients. Previous research has shown that the ESRT may be recorded at lower stimulation levels and with a higher incidence of success with the use of higher frequency probe tones (e.g., 678 and 1000 Hz) relative to the use of the conventional 226-Hz probe tone. Research has also shown that the acoustic reflex may be recorded at lower stimulus levels with the use of wideband reflectance when compared to the acoustic reflex threshold recor
