Altered physiology of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis restricts adaptation to host-relevant conditions and produces condition-dependent collateral vulnerabilities.

UNLABELLED: Antibiotic resistance mutations often disrupt essential cellular processes; however, the physiological consequences of these mutations under host-relevant conditions remain poorly understood in many bacterial pathogens. Here, we have used a combination of phenotypic growth assays and metabolomics to investigate how drug resistance affects the metabolism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and its ability to adapt to different host-relevant conditions. This work shows that (i) the fitness costs of antibiotic resistance in M. tuberculosis are highly variable and can be exacerbated or allev

Combined morpho-physiological, ionomic and transcriptomic analyses reveal adaptive responses of allohexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) to iron deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Plants worldwide are often stressed by low Fe availability around the world, especially in aerobic soils. Therefore, the plant growth, seed yield, and quality of crop species are severely inhibited under Fe deficiency. Fe metabolism in plants is controlled by a series of complex transport, storage, and regulatory mechanisms in cells. Allohexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a staple upland crop species that is highly sensitive to low Fe stresses. Although some studies have been previously conducted on the responses of wheat plants to Fe deficiency, the key mechanisms underlyin

Divergent metabolic strategies under food limitation reveal physiological adaptive advantages of invasive Trachemys scripta elegans over native turtles.

Food limitation is a common ecological challenge for freshwater organisms and may have differential impacts on the performance of native and invasive species. The physiological and biochemical mechanisms for interspecific tolerance to food shortage remain poorly understood. Here, we compared serum and liver biochemical parameter, relative expression of genes related with carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and metabolomic profile in two freshwater turtles, invasive Trachemys scripta elegans and native Mauremys sinensis, under prolonged food limitation to evaluate its differential effects betwee

Locomotor Profile Influences Physiological and Locomotor Adaptations After 6 Weeks of High-Intensity or Sprint Interval Training in Male and Female Runners.

PURPOSE: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) and sprint interval training (SIT) can improve physiological (eg, maximal oxygen uptake [V˙O2max]) and locomotor (eg, maximal aerobic speed, MAS; maximal sprinting speed, MSS) variables. However, the influence of an athlete's locomotor profile on training adaptations to HIIT and SIT remains unclear. We aimed to (1) compare physiological and locomotor adaptations to HIIT and SIT and (2) assess how locomotor profiles affect these adaptations. METHODS: Twenty-seven trained male and female runners (27.7 [7.5] y; n = 12 women) completed 6 weeks of H

Control and adaptability of seasonal changes in behavior and physiology of latitudinal avian migrants: Insights from laboratory studies in Palearctic-Indian migratory buntings.

Twice-a-year migrations, one in autumn and the other in spring, occur within a discrete time window with striking alterations in the behavior and physiology, as regulated by the interaction of endogenous rhythms with prevailing photoperiod. These seasonal voyages are not isolated events; rather, they are part of an overall annual itinerary and remain closely coupled to the other annual subcycles, called seasonal life history states (LHSs). The success of migration depends on appropriate timing of the initiation and termination of each LHS, for example, reproduction, molt, summer nonmigratory,

PhoPQ two-component regulatory system plays a global regulatory role in antibiotic susceptibility, physiology, stress adaptation, and virulence in Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.

BACKGROUND: Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, an opportunistic pathogen, is ubiquitously present in various environments, signifying its high capability of environmental adaptation. Two-component regulatory system (TCS) is a powerful implement to help organisms to survive in different environments. In clinic, treatment of S. maltophilia infection is difficult because it is naturally resistant to many antibiotics, highlighting the necessity to develop novel drugs or adjuvants. Given their critical and extensively regulatory role, TCS system has been proposed as a convincing target for novel drugs o

Physiological adaption to maternal malaria and other adverse exposure: low birth weight, functional capacity, and possible metabolic disease in adult life.

The concept of developmental origins of health and disease and the epidemic of noncommunicable diseases in low- and middle-income countries has increased the focus on low birth weight (LBW). Most studies linking LBW to future risk of metabolic diseases have focused on maternal nutrition and anemia. Several studies have shown that LBWis linked to skeletal muscle insulin resistance and future risk of type 2 diabetes, possibly caused by permanent modifications in skeletal muscle morphology and biochemistry leading to lowered functional capacity and physical activity in adult life. In some parts o

Infant pigs demonstrate motor adaptation across multiple physiologic functions during feeding in response to dynamic changes in milk flow rate.

Safe and effective infant feeding requires precise coordination of sucking, swallowing, and breathing, yet disruptions in this coordination affect a significant number of infants. Altering sensory input, such as bottle nipple flow rate, is used to address poor coordination in infants. However, prior studies often compare different nipples used across different feeds, which introduces confounding variables and limits insight into neuromotor responses. To address this, we used infant pigs as a validated animal model to assess real-time neuromotor responses to dynamic changes in flow rate within
