Systemic and Targeted Therapies in Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an often-indolent type of salivary gland cancer (SGC). A subset of patients develops progression or aggressive disease warranting systemic therapy in the recurrent/metastatic (R/M) setting. We recommend genomic testing for all patients with R/M disease to aid with prognostication and eligibility for potential experimental therapies. Here, we review the currently available treatment options (cytotoxic chemotherapies and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR)-targeting tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs)). Based on limited data, we nominate regimens w

[Strategies for preventing postoperative recurrence of adenoid hypertrophy].

Adenoid hypertrophy is a common disease in pediatric otorhinolaryngology. Surgical resection is the main treatment at present, but many children still face the risk of postoperative recurrence or even secondary surgery. In order to reduce the postoperative recurrence rate and provide reference information for clinical medical staff and parents of the children, this review was carried out to analyze the domestic and foreign pertinent literature in recent years and put forward overall prevention strategies base on the related factors of recurrence.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma located on the lower lip.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a relatively rare epithelial tumor of the major and minor salivary glands that makes up less than 1% of head and neck neoplasms. The typical clinical and pathological findings of this neoplasm include slow growth, perineural invasion, multiple local recurrences, and distant metastasis. Herein, we report a patient with adenoid cystic carcinoma located to the lower lip which is quite uncommon.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the vagina: A case report.

RATIONALE: Squamous carcinoma is the most common malignancy of vagina. Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) in the vagina is very rare. PATIENT CONCERNS: In the present study, we present a 45-year-old woman with a palpable swelling in the vagina. The patient reported body paresthesia, chest congestion, expiratory dyspnea, and itching in the thigh root. DIAGNOSIS: The ultrasound results revealed inhomogeneous echoes of the muscular layer in the middle and distal of the vagina, and probed a slightly richer blood flow signal. Then biopsy was performed. On microscopic examination, it was observed that

[Tactics of conservative treatment of chronic adenoiditis in children].

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the use of natural preparations Tonsilotren and Cinnabsin (T & C therapy) in the complex treatment of chronic adenoiditis in children. In the control group, children received standard anti-inflammatory therapy. The high efficacy of the combined intake of Tonzilotren and Cinnabsin drugs (T & C therapy), the use of which led not only to the disappearance of signs of chronic adenoiditis, but also to a significant decrease in the size of the pharyngeal tonsil, which allowed to avoid surgical treatment.

Syncope due to tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma.

We present a case of a 34-year-old male who presented with syncope secondary to a large adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the distal trachea. A computed tomography and flexible bronchoscopy showed almost complete occlusion of the distal trachea. Resection with curative intent was performed, but resection margins were unfortunately not clear. The patient was subsequently offered adjuvant radiotherapy. Tracheal tumours comprise a small proportion of respiratory tract neoplasm, accounting for only about 2% of airway malignancies. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common tracheal tumour, followe

A rare masquerade of chalazion: Adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rarely seen malignant epithelial tumor of the eyelids. We present a rare case of primary ACC arising from the tarsal plate of the lower lid that clinically resembled a chalazion. A 66-year-old female presented with a recurring nodule in her left lower lid. She gave history of surgery for chalazion removal from the same site twice earlier. An initial diagnosis of a recurrent chalazion was made, and incision and curettage was done. Light microscopy showed a solid tumor composed predominantly of sheet-like and nested pattern of basaloid to low-columnar cells wi

Impact of adenoid hypertrophy on the open bite in children.

Nasal obstruction caused by adenoid hypertrophy can lead to malocclusion. The research material consisted of children aged 7-12 years with adenoid hypertrophy qualified for adenoidectomy. On the basis of the conducted tests (laryngological, orthodontic, pediatric), the occurrence of open frontal bite in children with pharyngeal tonsil hypertrophy, in particular in boys, was confirmed in comparison to children without hypertrophy correctly breathing through the nose.

Grommet and adenoid pain evaluation (GRAPE) study.

In the GRAPE study an analysis is made of postoperative pain sensation in children between 6 months and 6 years after adenotomy and placement of ear grommets. Intraoperative treatment with paracetamol versus placebo shows no statistically significant difference in pain between both groups indicating that this type of surgery causes little discomfort and does not require specific intraoperative analgesic treatment.

[Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx: a case report].

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is one of the rare pathological conditions affecting the larynx. It is known to develop from the glandula elements present in this organ. The authors report a clinical observation of adenoid cystic carcinoma in the form of an exophytic tumour of the pale pink colour having a smooth surface and the well-pronounced vascular patterns at the base. The neoplasm is localized in the arytenoid and retroarytenoid cartilage regions. Being of 3.5-4 cm in size, the tumour causes the narrowing of the larynx in its posterior portions and restricts its mobility. Bearing in mind the c

Radiotherapy for Tracheal-Bronchial Cystic Adenoid Carcinomas.

AIMS: Primary tracheal-bronchial adenoid cystic carcinoma (thoracic adenoid cystic carcinoma; TACC) is a rare and aggressive malignant tumour. Radiotherapy results have not been previously individualised in this setting. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Records of 31 patients with TACC (74% tracheal and 26% bronchial) who received radiotherapy between February 1984 and September 2014 were retrospectively analysed. RESULTS: Surgical removal of the primary tumour was carried out for most (71%) patients, and 13/22 (59%) had R1 or R2 (1/22) margins. The mean tumour size was 4.1 cm, 10 (32%) had associated

Nonencapsulated Streptococcus pneumoniae as a cause of chronic adenoiditis.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is an important human pathogen. To cause disease, it must first colonize the nasopharynx. The widespread use of pneumococcal-conjugate vaccines which target the capsular polysaccharide has led to decreased nasopharyngeal carriage of vaccine serotypes, but a concomitant increase in carriage of non-vaccine serotypes and nonencapsulated S. pneumoniae (NESp). Some NESp express pneumococcal surface protein K (PspK), a virulence factor shown to contribute to nasopharyngeal colonization. We present the case of a child with chronic adenoiditis caused by a PspK(+) NESp. We test

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the accessory parotid gland.

Accessory parotid gland is a small salivary gland tissue separated from main part of parotid gland. It is located on the masseter muscle anterior to the Stensen's duct. Tumors of accessory parotid gland are rare. In this article, we report an unusual case of adenoid cystic carcinoma involving accessory parotid gland. The patient presented with a progressively growing mass in the middle portion of her cheek. She underwent a partial parotidectomy including both the superficial and accessory lobes. The histopathologic diagnosis was adenoid cystic carcinoma of cribriform type.

Laryngeal Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant minor salivary gland tumor that represents <1% of all laryngeal tumors. The submucosal location of laryngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma (LACC) results in delayed presentation. Here, we present the first systematic review of reported cases of LACC to determine trends in presentation, diagnostic and treatment modalities, and patient outcome. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and EMBASE databases. METHODS: A search of the above databases was done to identify articles reporting cases of LACC. The variables included in the analysis wer

Radiographic adenoid evaluation--suggestion of referral parameters.

OBJECTIVE: this study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of current radiographic measurements, which were originally conceived to evaluate adenoid hypertrophy, as potential referral parameters. METHODS: children aged from 4 to 14 years, of both genders, who presented nasal obstruction complaints, were subjected to cavum radiography. Radiographic examinations (n = 120) were evaluated according to categorical and quantitative parameters, and data were compared to gold-standard videonasopharyngoscopic examination, regarding accuracy (sensitivity, negative predictive value, specificity, and positiv

Organ preservation for adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx.

OBJECTIVES: Two cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the larynx were treated with chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for organ preservation. We reviewed case series and current literature to contrast the potential role of primary CRT as an organ-sparing modality with standard laryngectomy and radiotherapy in patients with laryngeal ACC. METHODS: Two treatment-naïve patients with laryngeal ACC treated at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute between 2002 and 2007 were identified. Both patients were offered standard laryngectomy followed by adjuvant radiotherapy or organ-sparing treatment modality. RESULTS:

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the external auditory canal.

Primary cancers of the external auditory canal (EAC) are rare and most are squamous cell carcinomas. We report the case of a 78-year-old man who visited our institution with a 5-month history of right-side intermittent otalgia and ear fullness. Otoscopic examination showed a bulging mass arising from the superior and posterior aspects of the right EAC, and incision biopsy confirmed the lesion as adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). Lateral temporal bone resection in conjunction with total parotidectomy and neck dissection was subsequently performed. Postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy was administe
