INTRODUCTION: Respiratory diseases are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide imposing a significant global health burden. The admission rate of patients is the indication of the overall workload in the ward. The aim of this study was to find the prevalence of admission of patients in the pulmonology ward among patients visiting the pulmonology department of a tertiary care hospital. Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia among Inpatients via the Emergency Department: A Propensity-Score Matched Analysis.

Background: Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) is an inflammatory condition of the lung that develops at least 48⁻72 h after admission. HAP is contracted by both intensive care unit (ICU) and non-ICU patients, but no studies have examined the risk of HAP in patients admitted to the emergency department (ED). This study investigated the risk of developing HAP in ED patients and compared the occurrence of HAP 3⁻10 days after the first day of hospitalization in patients hospitalized via ED with those hospitalized via outpatient clinics. Methods: We analyzed the 2010 National Inpatient Sample data

Eight hundred and seventy-five cases of bacterial meningitis. Part I of a three-part series: clinical data, prognosis, and the role of specialised hospital departments.

Between 1966 and 1976, 875 patients with bacterial meningitis were treated at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Rigshospitalet. Among 495 patients admitted directly to the department, fatality rates were 0.4 per cent for meningococcal infections (including septicaemia), 3.7 per cent for haemophilus meningitis and 8.7 per cent for pneumococcal meningitis. The total fatality rate for directly admitted patients was 3.8 per cent, and 4.0 per cent had sequelae on discharge. Patients transferred from other hospitals often had complications, and their fatality rate (20.1 per cent) was markedly h

Occurrence of Dysphagia in Patients Admitted to a Department of Pulmonary Medicine.

BACKGROUND: Awareness of dysphagia and its clinical implications is increasing, yet its occurrence and impact among patients in Departments of Pulmonary Medicine remain underexplored. This study aims to assess the occurrence of dysphagia using standardized screening tools and describe the findings across patient subgroups. METHODS: Over six months, patients aged 65 or older-or those under 65 with dysphagia risk factors-admitted to the Department of Pulmonary Medicine were screened using the Four-Question Test (4QT) and a 30 mL water swallow test. Those who screened positive were referred to a

Emergency admission for cancer: a matter of survival?

The objective of this study was to compare the pre-hospital health care process, clinical characteristics at admission and survival of patients with a digestive tract cancer first admitted to hospital either electively or via the emergency department. The study involved cross-sectional analysis of information elicited through personal interview and prospective follow-up. The setting was a 450-bed public teaching hospital primarily serving a low-income area of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Two hundred and forty-eight symptomatic patients were studied, who had cancer of the oesophagus (n = 31), s

Transient myopia as rare condition after neurosurgery.

Refractive changes may be caused by systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, lupus erythematosus, or hypothyroidism. However, refractive changes following the removal of a brain tumour have not been reported. In our case report, we describe a young woman without any systemic disease. She came to the emergency department in our hospital, where she reported a headache on admission and no other difficulties. Vital computer tomography was performed at the emergency outpatient clinic. The frontoparietal round hypodense lesion with an indicated dense margin - suspicious abscess, was detected. Th

Observed daytime sleepiness in in-hospital geriatric patients and risk of falls.

BACKGROUND: Daytime sleepiness and falls are frequent in geriatric in-hospital patients; however, the relationship between both events is not clear. To test the hypothesis that observed daytime sleepiness is associated with falls in geriatric in-hospital patients data collected from medical records of patients who were admitted to an acute geriatric department were retrospectively analyzed. METHODS: The data from the medical records of patients who were admitted to the geriatric department of the Alfried-Krupp-Hospital in Essen, Germany in the period from January 2018 to March 2020 were retro

The primary outcome measures were pain intensity and patient perception of care. BACKGROUND: Pain management of patients admitted to hospital with acute abdominal pain can be insufficient. Patient involvement in health care has been seen to have benefits for patients. METHODS: A before-and-after intervention study was conducted in an emergency department observation unit and a surgical department. Da

Morbidity and mortality of hospitalized patients with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) has been associated with various metabolic disorders considered to be cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperlipidemia. To evaluate morbidity and mortality of hospitalized patients with DISH admitted to the department of medicine. One hundred patients from a cohort of 1020 consecutive patients, aged 45 years and more, admitted to the department of medicine were diagnosed as suffering from DISH. Another group of 100 patients, age- and gender matched, admitted without DISH, served as controls. Cli

Difficulties in the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis. Evaluation of antibiotic pretreatment and causes of admission to hospital.

In 104 patients with bacterial meningitis admitted to departments of general medicine, the diagnosis before admission and the effect of previous antibiotic treatment were studied. Antibiotic therapy begun before admission in 30 patients did not affect the ability to make a bacteriological diagnosis. The duration of illness before admission was longer in the treated than in the untreated group. About 50% of the patients were admitted with diagnoses other than meningitis, although half these patients had distinct meningeal signs on arrival at hospital. In the whole series, 76% had meningeal sign

[Urine collection and pain in pediatric emergency departments].

In cases of suspected urinary infection when babies are admitted to emergency departments, a cyto-bacteriological urine test is necessary. Collection bags are associated with a high risk of "false positives" while catheterisation is an invasive technique. Nursing teams in the paediatric emergency departments of Limoges and Poissy general hospitals carried out a study to assess the benefits of both methods, the feasibility of catheterisation in children under 3 months and the pain this procedure causes. They also examined the children's, nurses' and parents' own experiences of the treatment.

Hospitalization of the elderly patient for acute illness.

There is a paucity of studies on the characteristics of elderly patients who are admitted for treatment of acute disorders, even though their utilization of hospitals is high. This study involved 828 older persons admitted to a general hospital during a period of six months, for the treatment of acute illness. The typical patient appeared to be a woman in her 70's who entered the medical department because of a cardiovascular or a gastrointestinal disturbance, stayed no longer than 10 days, and returned home to live with her spouse. Though such a person apparently needed minimal assistance in
