IntroductionIndigenous adolescents experience unique biopsychosocial challenges compounded by cultural disruption, territorial displacement, and systematic marginalization. These factors contribute to elevated rates of psychological distress and suicide among Indigenous adolescent, necessitating culturally responsive mental health programmes that center youth voice and cultural values.ObjectiveTo develop and evaluate adolescent-led art-based vignettes as a culturally sensitive methodology for promoting mental health discussions among Kaingang Indigenous adolescents in the IMPACT study (Impleme

BACKGROUND: Youth of color who live in urban communities face disproportionate anxiety levels due to systemic inequities, including exposure to violence, economic instability, and neighborhood disadvantage. Despite increased need, these communities often lack accessible mental health interventions.
OBJECTIVE: This study presents a protocol for an anxiety prevention intervention developed through a community-based participatory approach that is tailored to urban youth of color using community-based participatory research methods.
METHODS: The intervention, co-developed with a community partne

PURPOSE: Cross-sectional studies in adults have demonstrated associations between early life adversity (ELA) and reduced hippocampal volume, but the timing of these effects is not clear. The present study sought to examine whether ELA predicts changes in hippocampal volume over time in a large sample of early adolescents.
METHODS: The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study provides a large dataset of tabulated neuroimaging, youth-reported adverse experiences, and parent-reported financial adversity from a sample of children around the United States. Linear mixed effects modeling was use

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare psychosocial outcomes and functional neuroimaging among youth with concussion, youth with anxiety, and age- and sex-matched controls.
METHODS: Using archival data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive DevelopmentSM Study, we analyzed between-group differences in psychosocial outcomes measured by the Child Behavior Checklist's internalizing and externalizing problem scales, and assessed brain function using resting-state fMRI network-region connectivity (specifically frontoparietal network (FPN) and default mode network (DMN) connectivity with the amygdala)

Adolescence is the peak period for the onset of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Brain networks of cognitive and affective control in adolescents are not well developed when their exposure to external stimuli suddenly increases.Reasonable parental monitoring is especially important during this period. To examine the role of parental monitoring in the development of functional brain networks of GAD, we conducted a cross-validation-based predictive study based on the functional brain networks of 192 participants. We found that a set of functional brain networks, especially the default mode net

OBJECTIVE: Adult women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and obesity have an 8-fold increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D). Our goal was to determine the incidence and risk factors for T2D in adolescents with PCOS and obesity.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Retrospective chart review of girls aged 11-21 years with confirmed PCOS (oligomenorrhea and hyperandrogenism) diagnosis between July 2013 and Aug 2018 and at least one follow-up visit and BMI >85%ile. T2D incidence, defined with an HbA1c ≥6.5%, was calculated. A nested case-control study with 1:3 matching by race, ethnicity,

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a disease characterized by changes in the three-dimensional structure of the spine. Studies have shown that the development of AIS might be associated with genetic, biomechanics, endocrine factors and abnormal bone or cartilage development.
METHODS: Blood samples collected from 301 female patients (161 females with AIS and 140 females without AIS) were used for genotyping. Forty-eight serum samples from 161 females with AIS and 40 serum samples from 140 females without AIS were subjected to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). We al

This study examined the relationship between exposure to domestic violence and identity development in a sample of 108 undergraduate students with an average age of 18.7 yr. from University of Limpopo in South Africa. There were more women (n = 64; 58.7%) in the study than men (n = 45; 41.3%). Participants were classified into high and low domestic violence exposure groups on the basis of a median split in physical violence scores from the Child Exposure to Domestic Violence Scale (CEDV). Exposure was then compared with identity development as measured by the Ochse and Plug Erikson scale. The

The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of the Healthy Girls Project, an ecologically based, targeted prevention program aimed at discouraging the development of body-related problems in middle-school girls via an intervention directly and only with their mothers. Participants were 31 seventh- and eighth-grade girls and their mothers. The empirically based intervention comprised a series of 4 weekly workshops that had both interactive psychoeducational components and behavioral components (e.g., homework to do with daughters, modeling activities). The study design was experimental,

PURPOSE: Positive youth development (PYD) may be a promising strategy for promoting adolescent health. A systematic review of the published data was conducted to identify and describe PYD programs that improve adolescent sexual and reproductive health.
METHODS: Eight databases were searched for articles about PYD programs published between 1985 and 2007. Programs included met the following criteria: fostered at least one of 12 PYD goals in multiple socialization domains (i.e., family, school, community) or addressed two or more goals in at least one socialization domain; allocated at least ha

Adolescent chronic antisocial behavior is costly but concentrated in a relatively small number of individuals. The search for effective preventive interventions draws from empirical findings of three kinds of gene-by-environment interactions: (1) parenting behaviors mute the impact of genes; (2) genes alter the impact of traumatic environmental experiences such as physical abuse and peer social rejection; and (3) individuals and environments influence each other in a dynamic developmental cascade. Thus, environmental interventions that focus on high-risk youth may prove effective. The Fast Tra

Prenatal exposure to maternal smoking has been linked to cognitive and auditory processing deficits in offspring. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that exposure to nicotine disrupts neurodevelopment during gestation and adolescence, possibly by disrupting the trophic effects of acetylcholine. Given recent clinical and preclinical work suggesting that neurocircuits that support auditory processing may be particularly vulnerable to developmental disruption by nicotine, we examined white matter microstructure in 67 adolescent smokers and nonsmokers with and without prenatal exposure to mater

BACKGROUND: The metabolic syndrome, associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease, begins to develop during adolescence.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to identify early predictors of the presence of the syndrome at the ages of 18 and 19 years in black and white girls.
METHODS: Using longitudinal data on participants from 2 centers in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study, a 10-year cohort study, we applied cutoffs from the Adult Treatment Panel III to document changes in the prevalence of abnormal syndrome elements and the syndro

During puberty, the acquisition of skeletal mass and areal bone mineral density (BMD) mainly reflects an increase in bone size (length and perimeters) and not true volumetric BMD. Sexual dimorphism in bone mass and areal BMD is also explained by differences in bone size (longer and wider bones in males) and not by differences in volumetric BMD. Androgens stimulate skeletal growth by activation of the androgen receptor, whereas estrogens (following aromatization of androgens and stimulation of estrogen receptors) have a biphasic effect on skeletal growth during puberty. Recent evidence from cli

We studied testicular growth and psychosexual development in 41 young males who had survived malignancies in childhood. The focus of the study was evaluation of the connection between the possible pathologies of these two phenomena. The size of the testicles was measured in millilitres and compared with reference values. The psychosexual development was evaluated using three approaches: the interviewer's evaluation, the patient's subjective assessment and information gained by specific questions. On the basis of the developmental theory of adolescence described by Blos, the appropriate develop

We report detailed interview data on a clinical sample (N = 15) of female-to-male transsexuals (FTs) compared to a matched research sample (N = 15) of lesbians (Ls). Both groups were relatively young, with a mean age of 21 years 10 months (FTs) and 23 years 8 months (Ls), respectively, and were of middle or lower SES. Both groups did not differ from each other in respect to frequency of tomboyish behavior or interest in doll play and other aspects of materanl rehearsal. Male peer preference was more often remembered among the FTs, but the difference between the groups was only of borderline si

Based on the knowledge of the physiology of regulation of gonadotropins and gonadal steroids, basal levels of these hormones might be indicative of the etiologic factors of abnormal pubertal development. In addition, stimulatory tests may help in the diagnosis of such conditions. It is interesting that the pubertal maturation of the adrenal cortex is independent of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The role of the adrenal cortex for the pubertal development remains questionable: adrenal androgens are low in isosexual precocious puberty, low in delayed adolescence, and normal in hyper- o

OBJECTIVE: DiGeorge syndrome (DGS) is characterized by facial dysmorphisms, congenital heart defects, palatal abnormalities, hypocalcemia, immunodeficiency, and neurodevelopmental deficits. Growth hormone deficiency may be present. Among these, recurrent infections, congenital heart defects, hypocalcemia, and feeding difficulties are the most common causes of impaired growth. The aim of this study was to describe and compare over time the growth trajectory of children and adolescents with DGS followed up in an outpatient clinic at a Brazilian tertiary-care referral hospital.
METHODS: In this
