National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI). Supplementary statement MMR vaccine and anaphylactic hypersensitivity to egg or egg-related antigens.

The fourth edition of the Canadian Immunization Guide (1993) recommends that "persons who have a history of anaphylactic hypersensitivity to hens' eggs (urticaria, swelling of the mouth and throat, difficulty in breathing or hypotension) should not be given measles vaccine except under special precautions." The precautions outlined include skin testing with diluted vaccine and graded challenge vaccination if the skin test is positive. Results of several recent studies have questioned such a cautious approach. NACI has reviewed all available data and revised its guidelines accordingly. The foll

Intraoperative death during caesarian section in a patient with sickle-cell trait. The Anaesthesia Advisory Committee to the Chief Coroner of Ontario.

The case of a woman with sickle cell trait who sustained a cardiac arrest and died during a Caesarian section under general anaesthesia is reported. Because the common causes of intraoperative hypoxia and shock were ruled out in this case, we believe that death was due to severe concealed aorto-caval compression. After delivery, the release of a large volume of hypoxaemic, acidotic blood with sickled cells could cause cardiac depression and arrest. The fact that the patient's mucous membranes were pink and she was haemodynamically stable while her uterus was cyanotic prior to delivery provides

Use of Inactivated Polio Vaccine Among U.S. Adults: Updated Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices - United States, 2023.

Poliovirus can cause poliomyelitis and lifelong paralysis. Although wild poliovirus types 2 and 3 have been eradicated, wild poliovirus type 1 and vaccine-derived polioviruses are still circulating in multiple countries worldwide. In 2022, a case of paralytic polio caused by vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 was identified in an unvaccinated young adult in New York. This case and subsequent detection of community transmission underscored the ongoing risk for importation of poliovirus into the United States and risk for poliomyelitis among unvaccinated persons. However, previous Advisory Commit

Summary of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) Rapid Response-Interim guidance on the use of Imvamune in the context of monkeypox outbreaks in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Monkeypox is endemic in Central and West Africa. Cases in non-endemic countries, including Canada, have been increasing since May 2022. Imvamune®, a live, non-replicating smallpox vaccine, was approved by Health Canada for active immunization against smallpox and monkeypox infections and disease in adults determined to be at high risk for exposure. The aim of this interim guidance is to consider the use of Imvamune for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and to summarize the available evidence in support of Imvamune use in this specific current context. METHODS: The National Advisory

Donor-derived transmission events in 2013: a report of the Organ Procurement Transplant Network Ad Hoc Disease Transmission Advisory Committee.

BACKGROUND: The Organ Procurement Transplant Network Disease Transmission Advisory Committee (DTAC), a multidisciplinary committee, evaluates potential donor-derived transmission events (PDDTE), including infections and malignancies, to assess for donor transmitted events. METHODS: Reports of unexpected PDDTE to Organ Procurement Transplant Network in 2013 were fully reviewed by DTAC. A standardized algorithm was used to assess each PDDTE from a given donor and to classify each individual recipient from that donor. RESULTS: Of 443 total PDDTE submitted, 159 were triaged and not sent out to t

Use of a reduced (4-dose) vaccine schedule for postexposure prophylaxis to prevent human rabies: recommendations of the advisory committee on immunization practices.

This report summarizes new recommendation and updates previous recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent human rabies (CDC. Human rabies prevention---United States, 2008: recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. MMWR 2008;57[No. RR-3]). Previously, ACIP recommended a 5-dose rabies vaccination regimen with human diploid cell vaccine (HDCV) or purified chick embryo cell vaccine (PCECV). These new recommendations reduce the number of vaccine doses to four. The reduction in doses recommended

Supplemental recommendations on adverse events following smallpox vaccine in the pre-event vaccination program: recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has issued recommendations previously for use of smallpox vaccine and supplemental recommendations for use of smallpox vaccine in the pre-event civilian vaccination program. On March 28, 2003, CDC reported cases of cardiac adverse events among persons vaccinated recently with smallpox vaccine. In response to these reports, ACIP held an emergency meeting on March 28 to make recommendations to CDC about medical screening of potential vaccinees and follow-up of persons with cardiovascular risk factors after vaccination. These recommendations
