[Gustatory nervous pathway syndromes].

Although the lingual nerve and the chorda tympani are the components of the classic peripheral gustatory pathway, loss of taste in patients after surgery for trigeminal neuralgia supports for the existence of an accessory gustatory pathway through the trigeminal sensory root and the gasserian ganglion. Bell's palsy is the most common pathology of the peripheral gustatory pathway. The central gustatory pathway ascends from the solitary tract nucleus in the medulla up to the upper pons in the ipsilateral central tegmental tract, rather than in the medial lemniscus as proposed in the past. It is

Growth cones and axon trajectories of a sensory pathway in the amphibian spinal cord.

Central axons of sensory ganglion (SG) neurons of the Xenopus tail enter the spinal cord via the ventral roots and travel dorsally and rostrally following a diagonal course within the lateral marginal zone (LMZ) to reach the dorsolateral fasciculus (DLF) (Nordlander et al.: Brain Res., 440:391-395, 1988). Axons are dispersed as they cross the cord. At the DLF they turn and travel together rostrally, sharing the fascicle with axons of primary sensory neurons (Rohon-Beard cells) already present in the tract. In this paper we analyze the growth patterns of the central projections of SG axons in t

Cerebellum mediates modality-specific modulation of sensory responses of midbrain and forebrain in rat.

Evidence of a sensory role of the cerebellum, mediating a modulation of effectiveness of afferent input at other parts of the brain, has been reported previously for certain sense modalities but has not been evaluated across several in a mammal. After a conditioning train of stimuli applied to the cerebellar surface in unanesthetized rats, diffuse flashes, acoustic clicks, and shocks to the sciatic nerve evoked multiunit and field potential responses that were recorded at three levels: midbrain, thalamus, and cerebral cortex. At a best interval between end of conditioning train (cerebellar) an

Connections of the anterior ectosylvian visual area (AEV).

We have previously described a visual area situated in the cortex surrounding the deep infolding of the anterior ectosylvian sulcus of the cat (Mucke et al. 1982). Using orthograde and retrograde transport methods we now report anatomical evidence that this anterior ectosylvian visual area (AEV) is connected with a substantial number of both cortical and subcortical regions. The connections between AEV and other cortical areas are reciprocal and, at least in part, topographically organized: the rostral AEV is connected with the bottom region of the presylvian sulcus, the lower bank of the cruc

Afferent and efferent connections of cerebellar lobe C3 of the mormyrid fish Gnathonemus petersi: an HRP study.

The present paper is devoted to the extrinsic connections of lobe C3 of the highly differentiated corpus cerebelli of the electric fish Gnathonemus petersi. For this purpose, HRP injections or gels were placed in distinct parts of lobe C3 or its peduncle, in the pretectal region, and in the eye. Moreover, the presence of serotonin and tyrosine-hydroxylase was studied with immunohistochemical methods. The afferent connections of the rostral and caudal part of lobe C3 appear to differ considerably. Although both parts receive comparable projections from two pretectal nuclei (termed nucleus genic

Migraine, vertigo and migrainous vertigo: Links between vestibular and pain mechanisms.

This review develops the hypothesis that co-morbid balance disorders and migraine can be understood as additive effects of processing afferent vestibular and pain information in pre-parabrachial and pre-thalamic pathways, that have consequences on cortical mechanisms influencing perception, interoception and affect. There are remarkable parallel neurochemical phenotypes for inner ear and trigeminal ganglion cells and these afferent channels appear to converge in shared central pathways for vestibular and nociceptive information processing. These pathways share expression of receptors targeted

A conserved axon type hierarchy governing peripheral nerve assembly.

In gnathostome vertebrates, including fish, birds and mammals, peripheral nerves link nervous system, body and immediate environment by integrating efferent pathways controlling movement apparatus or organ function and afferent pathways underlying somatosensation. Several lines of evidence suggest that peripheral nerve assembly involves instructive interactions between efferent and afferent axon types, but conflicting findings challenge this view. Using genetic modeling in zebrafish, chick and mouse we uncover here a conserved hierarchy of axon type-dependent extension and selective fasciculat

The Vagus Nerve in Appetite Regulation, Mood, and Intestinal Inflammation.

Although the gastrointestinal tract contains intrinsic neural plexuses that allow a significant degree of independent control over gastrointestinal functions, the central nervous system provides extrinsic neural inputs that modulate, regulate, and integrate these functions. In particular, the vagus nerve provides the parasympathetic innervation to the gastrointestinal tract, coordinating the complex interactions between central and peripheral neural control mechanisms. This review discusses the physiological roles of the afferent (sensory) and motor (efferent) vagus in regulation of appetite,

Visceral nociception: peripheral and central aspects of visceral nociceptive systems.

Discomfort and pain are the sensations most commonly evoked from viscera. Most nociceptive signals that originate from visceral organs reach the central nervous system (c.n.s.) via afferent fibres in sympathetic nerves, whereas parasympathetic nerves contain mainly those visceral afferent fibres concerned with the non-sensory aspects of visceral afferent function. Noxious stimulation of viscera activates a variety of specific and non-specific receptors, the vast majority of which are connected to unmyelinated afferent fibres. Studies on the mechanisms of visceral sensation can thus provide inf

Differential chemosensory function and receptor expression of splanchnic and pelvic colonic afferents in mice.

Lumbar splanchnic (LSN) and sacral pelvic (PN) nerves convey different mechanosensory information from the colon to the spinal cord. Here we determined whether these pathways also differ in their chemosensitivity and receptor expression. Using an in vitro mouse colon preparation, individual primary afferents were tested with selective P2X and transient receptor potential vanilloid receptor 1 (TRPV1) receptor ligands. Afferent cell bodies in thoracolumbar and lumbosacral dorsal root ganglia (DRG) were retrogradely labelled from the colon and analysed for P2X3- and TRPV1-like immunoreactivity (L

Asymmetry of the insula-sensorimotor circuit in Parkinson's disease.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience motor and non-motor symptoms, suggesting alterations of the motor and/or limbic system or more probably of their communications. We hypothesized that the communication between the insula (part of the limbic system) and sensorimotor cortex in PD is altered and hemispheric asymmetric. Furthermore, that this asymmetry relates to non-motor symptoms, and specifically, that apathy-related asymmetry is unique to PD. To test these hypotheses, we used a novel multivariate time-frequency analysis method applied to resting-state functional magnetic resona

Bronchopulmonary afferent nerves.

Vagal afferent nerves are the primary communication pathways between the bronchopulmonary system and the central nervous system. Input from airway afferent nerves to the CNS is integrated in the brainstem and ultimately leads to sensations and various reflex outputs. Afferent nerves innervating the airways can be classified into various distinct phenotypes. However, there is no single classification scheme that takes all features, including conduction velocity, cell body diameter, ganglionic origin, and stimuli to which they respond (modality) into account. At present, bronchopulmonary afferen

Comparative localization of colorectal sensory afferent central projections in the mouse spinal cord dorsal horn and caudal medulla dorsal vagal complex.

The distal colon and rectum (colorectum) are innervated by spinal and vagal afferent pathways. The central circuits into which vagal and spinal afferents relay colorectal nociceptive information remain to be comparatively assessed. To address this, regional colorectal retrograde tracing and colorectal distension (CRD)-evoked neuronal activation were used to compare the circuits within the dorsal vagal complex (DVC) and dorsal horn (thoracolumbar [TL] and lumbosacral [LS] spinal levels) into which vagal and spinal colorectal afferents project. Vagal afferent projections were observed in the nuc

The T-type calcium channel Ca V 3.2 regulates bladder afferent responses to mechanical stimuli.

The bladder wall is innervated by a complex network of afferent nerves that detect bladder stretch during filling. Sensory signals, generated in response to distension, are relayed to the spinal cord and brain to evoke physiological and painful sensations and regulate urine storage and voiding. Hyperexcitability of these sensory pathways is a key component in the development of chronic bladder hypersensitivity disorders including interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome and overactive bladder syndrome. Despite this, the full array of ion channels that regulate bladder afferent responses to

A method of nodose ganglia injection in Sprague-Dawley rat.

Afferent signaling via the vagus nerve transmits important general visceral information to the central nervous system from many diverse receptors located in the organs of the abdomen and thorax. The vagus nerve communicates information from stimuli such as heart rate, blood pressure, bronchopulmonary irritation, and gastrointestinal distension to the nucleus of solitary tract of the medulla. The cell bodies of the vagus nerve are located in the nodose and petrosal ganglia, of which the majority are located in the former. The nodose ganglia contain a wealth of receptors for amino acids, monoami

Distribution of the cells of primary afferent fibers to the cat auricle in relation to the innervated region.

The origin and peripheral distribution of the primary afferent fibers to the cat auricle were studied by the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) method. Following HRP injection into the whole region of the auricle, HRP-labeled cells were found ipsilaterally in the trigeminal ganglion, geniculate ganglion, superior ganglion of the vagus nerve and in the C1 to C4 spinal ganglia. In addition to the ganglia of cranial and spinal nerves, labeled cells were also observed in the facial nerve trunk and in the dorso-lateral portion of the superior cervical ganglion. In the case of HRP injection into the centr

Distribution and ultrastructure of primary afferent axons in Lissauer's tract in the northern leopard frog (Rana pipiens).

Dorsal roots were transected and filled with horseradish peroxidase to identify the primary afferent axons in Lissauer's tract (LT) of the spinal cord in a ranid frog with light and electron microscopy. Axons in LT could be traced at least 2-3 segments rostral and caudal to the level of the filled root. Some axons in LT entered a nucleus in the dorsal lateral funiculus at brachial and lumbar levels, while other axons terminated in widespread regions of the dorsal horn. Electron microscopy revealed unlabelled terminals with numerous large, dense-cored vesicles in LT. However, large vesicles wer

Gut-brain communication: types of sensory nerves and mechanisms of activation.

Understanding the locations of extrinsic sensory nerve endings in the gastrointestinal tract and their mechanisms of activation is essential to advancing our understanding of how communication along the gut-brain axis affects health and disease. The gastrointestinal tract detects diverse stimuli (chemical, mechanical and thermal signals) via two major types of primary afferent (sensory) nerves: vagal and spinal afferents. Viscerofugal neurons represent a third pathway that has been indirectly implicated in gut-brain signalling. These spinal and vagal afferents transmit sensory signals to the b

Alterations in neural pathways to the urinary bladder of the rat in response to streptozotocin-induced diabetes.

Voiding dysfunction in diabetics has been attributed to a variety of causes including an axonopathy in autonomic pathways to the urinary bladder. The present study was undertaken to determine whether changes occurred in afferent and efferent neurons supplying bladders of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Nine weeks after STZ treatment, the mean cross-sectional area for retrogradely labeled (Fluoro-Gold) bladder neurons in the major pelvic ganglion (MPG) was greater in diabetics (364 microns 2) than controls (300 microns 2). The number of labeled neurons was similar in these groups. I

Mechanisms of Disease: central nervous system involvement in overactive bladder syndrome.

The pathophysiology of overactive bladder syndrome (OABS) and detrusor overactivity (DO) is complex and involves both peripheral and central nervous system (CNS) factors. Central in OABS is urgency, the pathophysiology of which is unknown. Increased afferent activity, decreased capacity to process afferent information, decreased suprapontine inhibition, and increased sensitivity to contraction-mediating transmitters are all potential causes of DO and OABS. Because both urgency and initiation of the micturition reflex depend on afferent input from the lower urinary tract, it seems logical that
