Among 58 aerobic actinomycetes isolated from different sources and geographical locations, none of 23 Nocardia asteroides isolates, at 18 N. farcinica isolates, 1 of 5 N. otitidiscaviarum isolates, and 1 of 4 Rhodococcus species isolates opacified Middlebrook 7H10 medium. Within the N. asteroides complex, this characteristic, together with growth at 45 degrees C and resistance to each of erythromycin, cefotaxime, and tobramycin, provides a simple means of distinguishing N. farcinica from N. asteroides.

We describe a medium, novobiocin, brilliant green, glycerol, lactose (NBGL) agar, for the routine isolation of Salmonella strains from stool samples. The NBGL agar principle involved the use of the antisaprophytic effect of brilliant green and novobiocin. Glycerol and lactose were added in order to distinguish between Citrobacter and Salmonella. A soft agar cloning assay was used to culture 158 specimens of head and neck tumors. The effect of phospholipase A from snake venom and deoxycholic acid on lipoprotein-X (LP-X) recovered from the cathode side of a previous agar gel electrophoresis is described. Adding phospholipase A and deoxycholic acid to the removed cathodal fraction is followed by a marked migration to the anode side on a second electrophoresis procedure. This seems to confirm that phospholipase A and bile salts on LP-X particles modifying their agar gel electrophoretic migration characteristics.

The burden of food waste highlights the need for effective, scalable preservation strategies. Herein, we developed a natural, biocompatible, plant-based, and consumer-friendly metal-phenolic-agar (MPN-Agar) coating for postharvest preservation. The coating was formed through coordination between micronutrient ions (e.g., Zn2+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and Fe3+) and tannic acid within an agar matrix, producing stable microscale colloidal particles.
