Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug hypersensitivity in a pediatric severe asthmatic population.

INTRODUCTION:: Asthma is a common pediatric disease. Identification of exacerbating factors is important to gain better asthma control. One potential exacerbation trigger is NSAID-hypersensitivity (NSAID-H). Studies regarding pediatric NSAID-H have varied demographics, methodologies, and conclusions. However, most studies find NSAID-H more prevalent in asthmatic patients. METHODS:: The objective was to determine the prevalence, symptoms, and factors associated with NSAID-H in a pediatric severe asthma population. One hundred children aged 6 to 18 years old from the Severe Asthma Clinic at Ril

Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of survivors of SARS-COV-2 infection: A descriptive study.

INTRODUCTION: In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a pandemic for coronavirus 19. Typical symptoms were fever, cough, asthenia, dyspnea, and muscle pain. Pulmonary and central nervous system compromise presented challenging characteristics for healthcare physicians. The objectives of this study were to identify epidemiological and clinical characteristics of SARS-COV-2 infection survivors in a region of Argentina and to determine differences between gender, age groups, year of infection, and evolution time since diagnosis. METHODS: A descriptive and analytical cross-sec

Olfactory bulb magnetic resonance imaging in SARS-CoV-2-induced anosmia in pediatric cases.

In this paper, we report three cases of pediatric patients with COVID-19 infection who presented with different symptoms and also anosmia and/or ageusia. The common feature of these 3 patients is that the smell and / or taste disorder developed without nasal symptoms such as nasal congestion, nasal obstruction or rhinorrhea. Although 40% of anosmies contains viral etiologies, COVID- 19 differs from other viral anosmies by the lack of nasal congestion and runny nose. Coronaviruses could invade the brain via the cribriform plate close to the olfactory bulb and the olfactory epithelium. We may ex

Stellate ganglion block reduces symptoms of Long COVID: A case series.

After recovering from COVID-19, a significant proportion of symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals develop Long COVID. Fatigue, orthostatic intolerance, brain fog, anosmia, and ageusia/dysgeusia in Long COVID resemble "sickness behavior," the autonomic nervous system response to pro-inflammatory cytokines (Dantzer et al., 2008). Aberrant network adaptation to sympathetic/parasympathetic imbalance is expected to produce long-standing dysautonomia. Cervical sympathetic chain activity can be blocked with local anesthetic, allowing the regional autonomic nervous system to "reboot." In this case

Neuroinvasive potential of human coronavirus OC43: case report of fatal encephalitis in an immunocompromised host.

Neurologic manifestations of COVID-19 include anosmia, ageusia, encephalopathy, agitation, confusion, ischemic strokes, Guillain-Barré syndrome, seizures, and hemorrhagic encephalitis. Although mechanisms of central nervous system (CNS) injury are likely diverse, direct viral invasion of the CNS has been demonstrated in case reports. Neurotropism of human coronaviruses (HCoVs) is therefore of great interest in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Here we present an autopsy-proven case of fatal human coronavirus (HCoV)-OC43 encephalitis in an infant with aplastic thymus and chronic T-cell lymp

Headache and pleocytosis in CSF associated with COVID-19: case report.

In December 2019, a new coronavirus infection was identified in China. Although the clinical presentation of COVID-19 is predominantly respiratory, more than 35%% of patients have neurological symptoms. We report an elderly female with asthenia, dry cough, anosmia, ageusia, fever, nausea, and a severe and persistent headache. She had confirmed COVID-19 using the nasal swab RT-PCR technique. Her cranial tomography was normal. The CSF analysis demonstrated a cell count of 21 cells/mm3 (80% lymphocytes and 20% monocytes), 34 mg/dl protein, and 79 mg/dl glucose. She improved after 4 days. Our repo

SARS-CoV-2 Infection as a Cause of Acute Pancreatitis in a Child-A Case Report.

The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was detected for the first time in China in December 2019. Soon after it was declared a pandemic. Main symptoms include fever, dyspnea, cough, muscle pain, headache, anosmia and ageusia, however a growing body of evidence shows that other organs can be affected. Gastrointestinal manifestations have been observed in a considerable number of patients and include abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting. The involvement of liver as well as pancreas has been also described, however there are only a few cases of acute pancreatitis reported in patients with COVI

A review of smell and taste dysfunction in COVID-19 patients.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple anecdotal reports suggest that smell and taste loss were early subclinical symptoms of COVID-19 patients. The objective of this review was to identify the incidence of smell and taste dysfunction in COVID-19, determine the onset of their symptoms and the risk factors of anosmia, hyposmia, ageusia or dysgeusia for COVID-19 infection. METHODS: We searched the PubMed and Google Scholar on 15th May 2020, with search terms including SARS-COV-2, coronavirus, COVID-19, hyposmia, anosmia, ageusia and dysgeusia. The articles included were cross sectional studies, observational s

The AndroCoV Clinical Scoring for COVID-19 Diagnosis: A Prompt, Feasible, Costless, and Highly Sensitive Diagnostic Tool for COVID-19 Based on a 1757-Patient Cohort.

Introduction A major barrier for successful therapeutic approaches for COVID-19 is the inability to diagnose COVID-19 during the viral replication stage, when drugs with potential antiviral activity could demonstrate efficacy and preclude progression to more severe stages. Reasons that hamper an earlier diagnosis of COVID-19 include the unspecific and mild symptoms during the first stage, the delay in the diagnosis and specific management caused by the requirement of a real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for SARS-CoV-2 for the diagnosis of COVID-19, and the insuf

Hypogeusia as a complication of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty and use of taste strips as a practical tool for quantifying hypogeusia.

Hypogeusia is an uncommon complication of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) and few reports in the literature have documented it. Excision of part of the soft palate and damage to the glossopharyngeal nerve or its lingual branch as a result of diathermy or surgery are the possible causes. The case of a 45-year-old male who suffered hypogeusia following UPPP is reported herein. He reported no improvement over a 6-month period. Quantitative assessment of his taste threshold for the 4 basic tastes using taste strips showed a score of 7/18, indicating hypogeusia. The possibility of taste disorder a

COVID-19 associated anosmia in pediatric patients: subject publications review.

OBJECTIVE: Aim: To review the publications subject to the problem of COVID-19 associated anosmia incidence in pediatric patients as well as its pathogenesis, diagnostics, treatment and recovery. The peculiarity of pediatric COVID-19 anosmia is due to children accounting for very low percentage of COVID-19 patients (comparing to one in adults), mostly with milder course of the disease. Awareness of anosmia and its proper diagnostics is crucial in children and adolescents, considering it can be the only manifestation in COVID-19 positive pediatric patients. Neurological and Psychiatric Manifestations of Post-COVID-19 Conditions.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the factors associated with neurological manifestations of post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) conditions. METHODS: We retrospectively collected data from 440 patients who visited our post-COVID-19 clinic more than 4 weeks after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. We analyzed the prevalence of different neurological symptoms (brain fog, memory impairment, headache, and dizziness) and assessed the associated factors. RESULTS: Brain fog was the most common symptom, observed in 170 patients (38.6%), followed by headaches (n = 137,

Consecutive envenomation of two men bitten by the same coral snake (Micrurus corallinus).

Objective: To report two patients who developed systemic neurotoxicity after consecutive bites by the same coral snake.Case report: Two previously healthy men (32-year-old and 34-year-old) found a coral snake in a woodpile while collecting wood for a barbecue. During the barbecue, both men became drunk and "played" with the snake, believing that they were handling a false coral snake, and were bitten within a few minutes of each other. Both patients were admitted to a referral tertiary care hospital (175 km from where the bites occurred) 16 hours and 19 hours postbite; both showed similar feat

A case of anosmia and hypogeusia as a complication of propofol.

Anesthetics represent an uncommon cause of taste and smell disorders. We describe a case of anosmia and hypogeusia for 6 weeks after recovery from a uterine curettage operation in a 32-year-old woman. The case is unusual because propofol was the only anesthetic used during surgery and anesthesia. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed no abnormality. This case may highly suggest that propofol could induce smell and taste disorders.

[Gustatory loss: causes, consequences and treatment].

The loss of taste is a common symptom and may have serious somatic and psychological consequences. Little attention is paid to the condition in doctors' practices, however, and the topic is also hardly mentioned in scientific publications. It is important to distinguish between isolated gustatory loss and gustatory loss in combination with other neurological symptoms. Isolated gustatory loss can be the result of a laesion of the chorda tympani of the facial nerve caused by otitis media or damage to the taste buds, for example. Treatment is aimed at removing the cause, e.g. medication or chroni

Prevalence and characteristics of persistent symptoms after non-severe COVID-19: a prospective cohort study.

We performed a prospective cohort study of 311 outpatients with non-severe COVID-19 (187 women, median age 39 years). Of the 214 (68.8%) who completed the 6-week follow-up questionnaire, 115 (53.7%) had recovered. Others mostly reported dyspnea (n = 86, 40.2%), weight loss (n = 83, 38.8%), sleep disorders (n = 68, 31.8%), and anxiety (n = 56, 26.2%). Of those who developed ageusia and anosmia, these symptoms were still present at week 6 in, respectively, 11/111 (9.9%) and 19/114 (16.7%). Chest CT scan and lung function tests found no explanation in the most disabled patients (n = 23). This stu
