Mannose-binding lectin gene polymorphism in relation to periodontal infection.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) plays an important role in innate immunity. MBL deficiency is usually caused by mutations in exon 1 of the MBL structural gene (MBL2). Our aim was to investigate MBL2 polymorphisms and their relation to salivary levels of periodontal inflammatory/tissue destruction markers and two major periodontitis-associated bacteria. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Salivary samples from 222 subjects were available for genotyping by pyrosequencing. The subjects between 40 and 60 years of age and having a minimum of 20 teeth were divided into three periodontal gr

[USE OF THE REAL-TIME PCR FOR STUDY OF THE PERIODONTAL MICROBIOME IN PATIENTS WITH COMBINED PATHOLOGY OF GASTRODUODENAL ZONE AND CHRONIC PERIODONTITIS].

The total of 54 patients with chronic periodontitis of different severity was tested using real-time PCR (Dentoflor kit). The group included 38 patients with chronic gastritis. For the first time, a higher prevalence of Treponema denticola in periodontium of males in comparison with females was demonstrated. The patients with chronic gastritis had more human genome DNA at their periodontium than healthy individuals. Non-parametric statistical analysis demonstrated high association of periodontium colonization with. T. forsythensis and T. denticola (but not Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans

Cranberry components inhibit interleukin-6, interleukin-8, and prostaglandin E production by lipopolysaccharide-activated gingival fibroblasts.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the tooth supporting tissues. Gingival fibroblasts are the most abundant cells in periodontal tissues and participate actively in the host inflammatory response to periodontopathogens, which is known to mediate local tissue destruction in periodontitis. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a proanthocyanidin-enriched cranberry fraction, prepared from cranberry juice concentrate, on inflammatory mediator production by gingival fibroblasts stimulated by the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomi

Concentration-dependent antimicrobial effects of two mouthwashes on key periodontal pathogens: An in vitro study.

Periodontal diseases, caused by pathogenic dental plaque biofilm, are often treated with chlorhexidine, but its long-term use can lead to undesirable side effects. Therefore, it is of interest to compare the antimicrobial efficacy of two herbal mouthwashes, Oralife and Ora-T, against periodontal pathogens Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans using the disc diffusion method. Results showed that Oralife exhibited significantly larger zones of inhibition than Ora-T at all tested concentrations. No inhibitory effect was observed at the lowest concentration. Thus, we s

Quantification of subgingival bacterial pathogens at different stages of periodontal diseases.

Anaerobic gram-negative oral bacteria such as Treponema denticola, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Campylobacter rectus, and Fusobacterium nucleatum are closely associated with periodontal diseases. We measured the relative population (bacterial levels) of these oral pathogens in subgingival tissues of patients at different stages of Korean chronic periodontal diseases. We divided the individuals into those with chronic gingivitis (G), moderate periodontitis (P1), severe periodontitis (P2), and normal individuals (N) (n = 20 for each group

Biomarkers of periodontitis and inflammation in ischemic stroke: A case-control study.

Periodontitis is a common infectious disease associated with increased risk for ischemic stroke though presently unclear mechanisms. In a case-control study, we investigated salivary levels of four periodontal pathogens, as well as systemic and local inflammatory markers. The population comprised 98 patients with acute ischemic stroke (mean ± SD, 68.2 ± 9.7 yrs; 45.9% women) and 100 healthy controls (69.1 ± 5.2 yrs; 47.0% women). Patients were more often edentulous and had fewer teeth than controls (13.8 ± 10.8 versus 16.6 ± 10.1). After adjusting for stroke risk factors and number of teeth, c

Current concepts in juvenile periodontitis.

Juvenile periodontitis is one of the more debilitating periodontal diseases. The disease entity includes two manifestations of aggressive bone destruction, a localized and a generalized form, which affect adolescents at puberty. Recent studies have defined the prevalence of the disease with regard to locale, gender, and ethnicity. In addition, significant advances have been made in evaluating host response effects in juvenile periodontitis. Studies have identified changes in cell surface receptors on neutrophils, which appear to be related to both receptor density and structure. Various molecu

Orthodontic treatment in the presence of aggressive periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Aggressive periodontitis causes periodontal destruction, with loss of supporting alveolar bone. The common symptom is rapid attachment loss in the first molar and incisor area, in young adults. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to discuss the challenges, implications and the impact of orthodontic treatment in patients affected by severe periodontal problems, specifically aggressive periodontitis. DISCUSSION: In addition to other bacteria, the main pathogen involved in aggressive periodontitis is the Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. However, the susceptibility to the di

Periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis: What have we learned about their connection and their treatment?

Rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis are chronic inflammatory diseases defined respectively by the destruction of the articular cartilage and tooth-supporting periodontal tissues. Although the epidemiologic evidence for an association between these two diseases is still scarce, there is emerging scientific information linking specific bacterial periodontal pathogens, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, in the citrullination process, leading to autoantibody formation and compromised immunotolerance of the susceptible patient to rheumatoid arthritis. Nanofibers with Incorporated Autochthonous Bacteria as Potential Probiotics for Local Treatment of Periodontal Disease.

The conventional treatment of periodontal disease does not solve the high incidence of recolonization of periodontal pockets by pathogens. Here, we introduce an innovative concept of incorporating autochthonous bacteria as potential probiotics into nanofibers for local treatment. We selected and isolated the strain 25.2.M from the oral microbiota of healthy volunteers. It was identified as Bacillus sp. based on 16S rRNA sequence analyses. The strain is nonpathogenic, produces antimicrobial substances, and can grow over the periodontal pathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in vitro, ma
