OBJECTIVE: Devices such as mobile phones and smart speakers could be useful to remotely identify voice alterations associated with alcohol intoxication that could be used to deliver just-in-time interventions, but data to support such approaches for the English language are lacking. In this controlled laboratory study, we compare how well English spectrographic voice features identify alcohol intoxication.
METHOD: A total of 18 participants (72% male, ages 21-62 years) read a randomly assigned tongue twister before drinking and each hour for up to 7 hours after drinking a weight-based dose of

OBJECTIVE: Acute alcohol intoxication is actually a common admission cause in the Emergency Department and represents an increasing public health burden, in particular among adolescents. It involves possible and significant illness and injury, which can quickly get worse and may need to be managed in the emergency room.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of the literature regarding the effectiveness of first aid role of the Emergency Department setting.
RESULTS: This review included eighteen studies about alcohol intoxication management in the Emergency Department; most o

BACKGROUND: Acute agitation in the setting of alcohol intoxication is commonly encountered in the Emergency Department (ED). In this setting, expert consensus guidelines recommend haloperidol over second-generation antipsychotics due to their limited safety data in alcohol intoxication.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to compare vital sign changes prior to and after risperidone administration between ED patients presenting with alcohol intoxication [ETOH (+)] and without alcohol intoxication [ETOH (-)]. The secondary objective was to assess the effect of benzodiazepine co-administration

Several long-term effects of alcohol abuse in children and adolescents are well described. Alcohol abuse has severe effects on neurodevelopmental outcome, such as learning disabilities, memory deficits, and decreased cognitive performance. Additionally, chronic alcohol intake is associated with chronic liver disease. However, the effects of acute alcohol intoxication on liver function in children and adolescents are not well characterized. The aim of this study was to determine if a single event of acute alcohol intoxication has short-term effects on liver function and metabolism. All children

Many witnesses to violent crimes are alcohol intoxicated, but research is lacking regarding how alcohol affects their perception of aggression and guilt. This study investigated to what extent alcohol intoxicated eyewitnesses differed from sober witnesses regarding how aggressive and guilty they perceived the involved parts in an intimate partner violence (IPV) situation. Eighty-seven healthy men ( n = 44) and women ( n = 43) were randomized to an alcohol group (0.7 g/kg) or a non-alcohol group. In a laboratory setting, alcoholic/non-alcoholic drinks were consumed before viewing a film depicti

AIM: To determine the extent to which ICD-10 alcohol intoxication codes are used for serious hospitalised injury and the distribution of these codes according to gender, age, injury mechanism and intent, severity of injury, and whether the patient was treated in an Intensive Care Unit.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: New Zealand.
PARTICIPANTS: All injury hospital discharges in 2010 that met specified severity criteria.
MEASUREMENTS: Cases which had a measurement of BAC (Y90) coded, or only a subjective assessment of alcohol intoxication (F10.0).
FINDINGS: 2.5% had a blood alcohol

INTRODUCTION: Agitation has significant consequences for patients and staff. When verbal techniques fail, expert guidelines recommend the use of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs). Perhaps out of familiarity with haloperidol and benzodiazepines, emergency department (ED) clinicians often pair SGAs with benzodiazepines as well. Use of SGAs such as olanzapine in alcohol-intoxicated (ETOH+) patients or with benzodiazepines is not well studied and may be associated with vital sign abnormalities.
METHODS: This is a structured chart review of all patient visits who received either oral or intr

OBJECTIVE: To present preliminary results of a pilot project on the prevention of alcohol-associated problems in adolescents with acute alcohol intoxication.
METHOD: Questionnaires were filled in by 110 of 128 adolescents (85.9% response rate) who had been admitted to a hospital in Munich, Germany, between December 2007 and July 2008, because of alcohol intoxication. Data were obtained on sociodemographic characteristics, alcohol intoxication and drinking patterns, and were analysed using descriptive methods.
RESULTS: Half of these adolescents mainly suffered from moderate to severe degrees

We examined potential differences in women's likelihood of sexual risk taking in a laboratory setting based on alcohol intoxication and sexual abuse history. Participants (n = 64) were classified as non-sexually abused (NSA) or as having experienced sexual abuse in childhood only (CSA) or adulthood only (ASA) and randomly assigned to consume alcoholic (.06, .08, or .10% target blood alcohol content) or non-alcoholic drinks, after which participants read and responded to a risky sex vignette. Dependent measures included vaginal pulse amplitude, self-reported sexual arousal, likelihood of engagi

OBJECTIVE: To find out severity of brain injury in alcohol intoxicated patients after mild (GCS 13-15) brain injury.
METHODS: A retrospective study of all patients older than 15 years in whom cranial CT (CCT) scan was performed between October 2006 and September 2007. Information of alcohol intoxication, injury mechanism, details of facial/head injuries, admission GCS, CCT findings and type of treatment were retrieved from patients' medical records.
RESULTS: There were 151 alcohol intoxicated patients. Thirty four (22.5%) patients had positive CCT scans for brain injury or basal/vault fractu

The incidence of traumatic injury, frequently associated with hemorrhagic shock, is higher in the alcohol-intoxicated individual. The outcome, as it pertains to both morbidity and mortality of this population, is partly dependent on duration of alcohol exposure and levels of blood alcohol at time of injury. In previous studies, we demonstrated that prolonged alcohol intoxication (15-h duration) produces marked hemodynamic instability and exacerbated early lung proinflammatory cytokine expression after hemorrhagic shock. The present study examines whether a shorter and more modest period of alc

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether there is a breath alcohol level (BrAC) below which confusion in the head injured patient should not be attributed solely to the acute effects of alcohol.
METHOD: Based in the Accident and Emergency Ward in Glasgow Royal Infirmary, a prospective observational study was carried out over a five month period. Patients admitted to the ward were recruited for the study if they had a primary diagnosis of head injury. The outcome measures recorded and analysed were sequential 2 hrly BrAC readings (mg/L) and Glasgow Coma Scale findings (Eye opening, motor and verbal respon

We prospectively examined the correlation of alcohol intoxication with injury severity, morbidity, and mortality in drivers involved in motor vehicle accidents in a prospective cohort study. The study enrolled 923 injured patients, of whom 421 were legally intoxicated (blood alcohol concentration [BAC] > or = 50 mg/dL) and 502 were not intoxicated (BAC < 50 mg/dL). The intoxicated drivers had a significantly higher injury severity score (ISS), lower Glasgow Coma Score, lower systolic blood pressure; higher rate in old age, male sex, greater rate of habitual drinking, greater lack of use of saf

The authors report the observation of an alcoholic patient admitted for tetanic manifestations, in whom severe hypocalcaemia associated with hyperphosphatemia were suggestive of hypoparathyroidism. Administration of magnesium supplementation alone improved the clinical features and led to the correction of the calcium abnormalities. The mechanisms of hypomagnesemia in alcohol intoxication are reviewed as well as the links with hypocalcaemia.

Acute inhalative alcoholic intoxication has been studied for its effect on the influx and level of free and bound thiamine in tissues of white mice. It is established that acute inhalative ethanol intoxication increases 35S-thiamine incorporation in tissues and decreases the level of endogenic free and bound thiamine. The results obtained permit a conclusion on intensification of the thiamine renewal in tissues with its sufficient influx from outside as affected by the ethanol narcosis.

In 46 patients experiencing traumatic brain injury, we studied the interactions of alcohol intoxication and severity of neurologic dysfunction on the resulting sympathetic nervous system activation. Sixty percent of the variation in norepinephrine (p less than 0.0001) and more than 50% of the variation in epinephrine (p less than 0.0001) were due to the initial ethanol concentrations and extent of brain injury assessed by the admission Glasgow Coma Score (GCS). As brain function deteriorated plasma cathecholamines rose (p less than 0.0001), but ethanol qualitatively and quantitatively modified

Suicides, homicides, motor vehicle crashes, and other violent deaths and injuries are linked inextricably to alcoholism. The association of injury and alcoholism should be particularly obvious to Emergency Department (ED) physicians. We sought to determine the extent to which intoxicated patients in an ED were properly diagnosed, counselled, and referred for substance abuse care. We reviewed the charts of 153 consecutive patients seen in a teaching hospital ED who had blood alcohol levels above 100 mg%. Most were male (70%), white (62%), young (mean age, 34 years) and severely intoxicated (mea

The influence of acute alcohol intoxication on the outcome of severe non-neurologic trauma was investigated in a prospective study. Alcohol was found in the blood in 35 of the 69 patients, with mean level 136 +/- 13 mg/100 ml. The patients were admitted to hospital 29.5 +/- 2 min after the injury and had mean ISS 25 +/- 2. In the patients with alcohol in the blood, the blood pressure and PCO2 on arrival were lower than in the other patients. When the alcohol level exceeded 100 mg/100 ml, the blood pressure and PCO2 were lower than in the sober patients despite significantly shorter time betwee

The present study tested the hypothesis that acute moderate alcohol intoxication is associated with reductions in experimentally-induced negative affect among 64 moderately drinking adult women and men. The effort incorporated a balanced placebo design, multiple measures of affective responses including cardiovascular and electrodermal activity, and control for phase of the sexual cycle among nonoral contraceptive women. Negative effect and psychophysiological responses to intoxication following stress manipulation were a complex function of beverage, expectancy, and gender. Expectation of a m
