INTRODUCTION AND AIMS OF THE STUDY: Despite the increasing incidence of alcohol misuse and the costs it incurs, British society continues to hold equivocal and ambiguous attitudes towards drinking, and understanding of the nature of alcohol dependence and related issues is limited. This qualitative study aimed to investigate the experiences of individuals with alcohol dependence to enhance understanding of the illness, identify key issues and common themes and provide insight into the experiences of the participants during their alcohol dependent period and recovery.

INTRODUCTION: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) offers as much as 90% protection against HIV transmission. However, the effectiveness of PrEP depends on uptake and adherence to even intermittent dosing. Along with intoxication leading to unintentional non-adherence, believing that alcohol mixed with pharmaceuticals is harmful (i.e., interactive toxicity beliefs) may lead to poor uptake and intentional non-adherence.
METHODS: HIV-negative sexually active men who have sex with men (N = 272) at a large Gay Pride event in Atlanta, GA, completed anonymous surveys of demographic characteristics, sexu

BackgroundThe lack of adequate resources in international cooperation limits the study of surgical specimens. The literature on inexpensive and widely available fixation media is scarce.Materials and MethodsSpecimens were prospectively collected during a surgical cooperation campaign in Senegal, where a team from Spain provided surgical care to the local population. The lesions were fixed in parallel using 10% formalin and 70% ethyl alcohol. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and immunohistochemical techniques (IHC) were performed. OBJECTIVE: To determine if student attendance at a specialized prenatal clinic would yield any change in their comfort level and in their attitudes toward pregnant women with drinking problems.
METHODS: A total of 117 third-year students rotating consecutively on our core obstetrics-gynecology clerkship consented to enrolling in this prospective cohort study between February 2004 and June 2005. Each was assigned either to attend a half-day prenatal clinic designed specifically for women with alcohol and substance use disorders (study group) or not to attend the clinic (control group). BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption is an important occupational risk factor, especially in safety-sensitive sectors such as construction. Alcohol-related psychomotor impairment may increase the risk of workplace injuries and may also affect the safety of third parties. However, data on alcohol-related behaviors, workers' risk perception, and alcohol-focused health surveillance among Italian construction workers are still limited. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey between September 2023 and June 2024 in 315 construction workers employed in small Italian companies. All participants pe

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol consumption is common among people with type 1 diabetes mellitus (PwT1D), with prevalence rates similar to the general population. However, it is associated with unique risks - increased risk of (delayed) hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, and impaired ability to self-manage diabetes. In this study, we aimed to explore the knowledge and experiences of young (>16 years old) PwT1D concerning safe alcohol use.
METHODS: We designed an anonymous survey informed by the clinical expertise of healthcare professionals, the lived experience of people with type 1 diabetes represe

BACKGROUND: We explored the association between alcohol use and condomless receptive (CRAI) and insertive (CIAI) anal intercourse within partnership contexts of men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) in Lima, Peru.
METHODS: From 2012-2014, we surveyed men and TGW (n=1607) who reported anal intercourse with ≥1 male or TGW. Alcohol use with up to 3 sexual partners during the prior 90days was evaluated. Bivariate and multivariate analyses used generalized estimating equations to assess event-level associations between alcohol use, CRAI, CIAI, and partnership characteristics

The objectives of this study were to assess attitudes, knowledge, and behavior related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody testing of adolescents and young adults undergoing treatment for alcohol and drug problems. Setting and subjects were 101 adolescents and young adults enrolled in a New England substance abuse rehabilitation program. All subjects had heard about acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and 84% desired an HIV antibody test if it were anonymous and confidential. If found to be HIV positive, 83% stated that they would be less likely to continue substance-abuse tre

METHODS: A multi-institutional, cross-sectional survey was carried out across seven medical schools in Japan. A self-report anonymous questionnaire was distributed to 1152 medical students; 951 respondents (82.6%) satisfactorily completed it. From the responses, we determined the reported prevalences of the following types of

Relatively few studies have examined gambling problems among individuals in a casino setting. The current study sought to examine the prevalence of gambling problems among a sample of casino patrons and examine alcohol and tobacco use, health status, and quality of life by gambling problem status. To these ends, 176 casino patrons were recruited by going to a Southern California casino and requesting that they complete an anonymous survey. Results indicated the following lifetime rates for at-risk, problem, and pathological gambling: 29.2, 10.7, and 29.8%. Differences were found with regards t

Background: University students are increasingly vulnerable to both depressive symptoms and hazardous alcohol use, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Disruptions in circadian rhythms, hormonal dysregulation, and changing social dynamics may heighten susceptibility to maladaptive coping behaviors such as alcohol consumption. While this relationship has been widely studied in Western populations, limited data exist for Eastern European contexts. This study investigated the association between alcohol consumption and depressive symptoms among Romanian university students and
