Perceived stress and allostatic load: Results from the All of Us Research Program.

The rising prevalence of individuals reporting extreme stress has major public health implications as it increases vulnerability to accelerated premature biological aging, thus increasing risk of chronic disease. To examine the impact of stress on premature biological aging, we assessed the association between exposure to increased stress, quantified by the Perceived Stress Scale, and odds of high allostatic load (AL). To illuminate previously unexplored socio-contextual factors, we controlled for self-reported individual and neighborhood social determinants of health that included discriminat

Lower levels of positive affect and insomnia are associated with elevated allostatic load among Ukrainian refugees.

To date, several biological alterations associated with the refugee status have been investigated. However, none of them has focused on the allostatic load (AL) index that is a collective measure of biological responses to stress. Therefore, the present study aimed to assess the AL index and its correlates in 60 Ukrainian refugees who migrated to Poland after the Russian invasion. The AL index was measured in 60 Ukrainian refugees and 50 controls matched for age and sex. It was based on sex-specific distributions of 15 biomarkers (cardiovascular markers, anthropometric measures, inflammatory m

Allostatic Load and Racial and Rural Disparities in Breast Cancer Survival.

IMPORTANCE: Racial and geographic disparities in breast cancer survival persist. Biological consequences of chronic stress, measured by allostatic load (AL), may contribute to these disparities, but their role in breast cancer prognosis is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between AL and overall survival among patients with breast cancer and assess the contribution of AL to racial and rural disparities in survival. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from an institutional electronic health record and cancer registry at the University of Vi

Race and Ethnicity Moderates the Relationship Between Family Income Level and Allostatic Load Among Adolescents in the United States.

PURPOSE: People from low-income households are at risk of high allostatic load (AL) in adulthood, which is linked to poor physical and mental health outcomes. It is unclear how early the income-AL link develops and whether this association differs by race and/or ethnicity. We examined associations of family income with high AL among adolescents and whether race and/or ethnicity modified associations. METHODS: Cross-sectional, nationally representative data came from 748 US adolescents (aged 12-17 years) who participated in the prepandemic 2017-March 2020 National Health and Nutrition Examinat

Abnormal blood biomarkers and trajectories of depressive symptoms among Chinese middle-aged and older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Although previous studies have demonstrated allostatic load (AL) predicts depressive symptoms, few studies have considered the association between AL and trajectories of depressive symptoms. This study aims to systematically examine the associations of abnormal blood biomarkers in the three biological systems with trajectories of depressive symptoms. METHODS: A total of 6251 participants aged 45+ from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10) in five

Allostatic load in women with infertility: a cross-sectional analysis study from NHANES 2015-2018.

BACKGROUND: Infertility affects approximately 15% of couples globally and is recognized as a major public health concern. Infertile women often experience significant psychological stress due to various factors, including work-related pressures, family dynamics, and reproductive challenges. However, the role of allostatic load-a marker of chronic stress and physiological dysregulation-in infertile women has been scarcely investigated. PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the association between allostatic load and infertility, as well as to identify potential biomarkers that can predict allos

Mid-Trimester Allostatic Load and Spontaneous Preterm Birth in a Cohort of Pregnant Women Living with HIV in Zambia.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal HIV is associated with preterm birth (PTB). In resource-rich settings, spontaneous preterm birth (SPTB) has been linked to biomarkers of stress. We examined the association between allostatic load and SPTB among women with HIV. METHODS: In a nested case-cohort analysis of a randomized trial of intramuscular progesterone to prevent PTB in women with HIV in Lusaka, Zambia, we measured 15 midtrimester plasma biomarkers from 4 domains: cardiovascular, immune, metabolic, and neuroendocrine. SPTB was defined as delivery <37wks preceded by spontaneous labor or membrane rupture.

Allostatic Load and Metabolic Syndrome in Depressed Patients: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Allostatic load (AL) is the cumulative wear and tear on the body due to the chronic adverse physical or psychosocial situations. The acute stress response activates the primary mediators of AL, which include cortisol, epinephrine (EPI), norepinephrine (NE), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S). Secondary outcomes, such as metabolic syndrome (MetS), cardiovascular, and immune system changes, can result from long-term stress responses. Given these complex reactions to an acute stressor, a multidimensional stress assessment is required when investigating individual stress reactivity in an

Multisystem physiological dysfunction is associated with depressive symptoms in a population-based sample of older adults.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between multisystem physiological dysfunction and depressive symptom severity in the US older adults. METHODS: We examined 2405 adults of age 60 years and older by using the data from the 2005-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We constructed a summary score of "physiological dysfunction," encompassing cardiovascular function, glucose regulation, liver function, and renal function. Overall depressive symptoms were obtained from the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire depression scale, and factor analysis was used to derive affective a

Early-life stress and HPA axis trigger recurrent adulthood depression.

It is now broadly accepted that psychological stress may change the internal homeostatic state of an individual. During acute stress, adaptive physiological responses occur, which include hyperactivity of the HPA axis. Whenever there is an acute interruption of this balance, illness may result. The social and physical environments have an enormous impact on our physiology and behavior, and they influence the process of adaptation or 'allostasis'. It is correct to state that at the same time that our experiences change our brain and thoughts, namely, changing our mind, we are changing our neuro

Allostatic load, depressive symptoms, and risk of cardiometabolic multimorbidity: A national representative cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress and depressive symptoms (DepS) increase the risk of cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs). However, the association of allostatic load (AL), an indicator of chronic stress burden, and DepS with cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the independent and joint associations of AL and DepS with CMM. METHODS: This study included 4989 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. AL was assessed based on 11 biomarkers, and DepS were evaluated using scores on the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression

Proposal for mechanisms of protection of supine sleep against sudden infant death syndrome: an integrated mechanism review.

UNLABELLED: Supine sleep decreases sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) incidence, however the mechanisms for this are unclear. The triple risk model for SIDS requires that one or more underlying abnormalities of breathing or autonomic control are present; these are rare, but brainstem defects are found in most SIDS cases. Supine sleep increases sympathetic nervous system tone, and level of state organization, and may therefore act as a stressor. This is evidenced by physiological arousal, and by delayed neurodevelopment in supine compared to prone sleepers. It is argued here that prone sleep p

Discrimination, chronic stress, and multimorbidity in cohort of Black and Latina transgender women with HIV: Longitudinal findings from the LITE Plus study.

Black and Latina transgender women with HIV (BLTWH) are exposed to repeated, intersecting discrimination based on race, gender, and serostatus. Minority stress theory conceptualizes discrimination as minority-specific stressors that drive health inequities. Allostatic load theory posits a pathway between discrimination and chronic disease through multisystem physiological dysregulation caused by chronic stress. To test this pathway, a longitudinal cohort of 108 BLTWH, enrolled December 2020 - June 2022 in Boston, New York City, and Washington, DC, were followed for 24 months, with biomarkers m

Allostatic load of immune cells in the spleen and brain of the Kcna1-null mouse model of temporal lobe epilepsy.

Human temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), particularly drug-resistant TLE, is associated with chronic peripheral immune activation. Here, we determined whether a similar association was detectable in a genetic mouse model of TLE with spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRS), Kcna1-null mice. Flow cytometry was used with fluorescence-activated cell sorting to determine the presence of lymphocytes, macrophages and granulocytes in isolated brain and spleen of wildtype (WT) and Kcna1-null mice. Splenic analysis revealed uniformly elevated Mac-1+MHC-II+ macrophages across all epileptic mice, whereas CD8+ cyt

Allostatic load and progression of cardio-renal multimorbidity: A UK biobank study.

BACKGROUND: Cardio-renal multimorbidity (CRM), the coexistence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), imposes a significant healthcare burden. Allostatic load (AL), indicating cumulative physiological dysregulation from chronic stress, may be a modifiable risk factor for CRM. METHODS: This study included 396,927 participants with a median follow-up of 13.67 years. AL was assessed via 10 biomarkers. Multistate models were used to analyze transitions from health to first cardio-renal disease (FCRD), to CRM, and to death. RESULTS: Higher AL was significantly associate

Associations Among Minority Stress, Allostatic Load, and Drug and Alcohol Use in Sexual Minorities: Protocol for the Queer Health Study-a Longitudinal Feasibility Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Substance use rates among sexual minorities are disproportionately greater than that of their heterosexual counterparts. Minority stress theory posits that one explanation for disproportionate substance use in sexual minority populations is a result of increased social stress associated with holding a minoritized identity. This minority stress has been linked to a myriad of negative mental health outcomes, including alcohol and drug use. In addition, emerging research has begun to demonstrate links between minority stress and stress physiology dysregulation. While animal and human
