Characterizing α-phase variants in titanium alloys via EBSD: Understanding colour indexing challenges.

Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) inverse pole figure (IPF) maps are indispensable techniques for visualizing grain orientations in titanium alloys. However, differentiating the twelve α-phase variants formed during the β → α phase transformation, following the Burgers orientation relationship, presents a challenge due to overlapping colours in IPF maps. This study systematically investigates how α-phase variants are coloured in IPF X, Y, and Z maps, using a Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo alloy sample fabricated via laser-based directed energy deposition of metals. By analysing the orientations of p

Ductilization of 2.6-GPa alloys via short-range ordered interfaces and supranano precipitates.

Higher strength and higher ductility are desirable for structural materials. However, ultrastrong alloys inevitably show decreased strain-hardening capacity, limiting their uniform elongation. We present a supranano (<10 nanometers) and short-range ordering design for grain interiors and grain boundary regions, respectively, in fine-grained alloys based on vanadium, cobalt, and nickel, with additions of tungsten, copper, aluminum, and boron. The pronounced grain boundary-related strengthening and ductilization mechanism is realized through segregation of the short-range ordering near the grain

Influence of Cu on the Mechanical and Shape Memory Properties of TiNi Alloys.

The significant phase transformation hysteresis in TiNi alloys limits their performance. To address this, copper (Cu) was added as an alloying element to reduce hysteresis. This study synthesized three compositions of Ti50Ni50-xCux (x = 0, 5, 7 at.%) shape memory alloys (SMAs) via vacuum arc melting to optimize the Cu content. The alloys were homogenized through hot rolling to maintain stable mechanical and shape memory properties. The hot-rolled Ti50Ni45Cu5 alloy demonstrated excellent shape memory behavior, achieving 100% thermal recovery after one cycle at 4% and 6% strain and 99.2% recover

Recent Progress in Creep-Resistant Aluminum Alloys for Diesel Engine Applications: A Review.

Diesel engines in heavy-duty vehicles are predicted to maintain a stable presence in the future due to the difficulty of electrifying heavy trucks, mine equipment, and railway cars. This trend encourages the effort to develop new aluminum alloy systems with improved performance at diesel engine conditions of elevated temperature and stress combinations to reduce vehicle weight and, consequently, CO2 emissions. Aluminum alloys need to provide adequate creep resistance at ~300 °C and room-temperature tensile properties better than the current commercial aluminum alloys used for powertrain applic

Understanding and Harnessing Nanoscale Immiscibility in Ru-In Alloys for Selective CO2 Hydrogenation.

Bimetallic alloys made from immiscible elements are characterized by their tendency to segregate on the macroscopic scale, but their behavior is known to change at the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate that in the Ru-In system, In atoms preferentially decorate the surface of 6 nm Ru nanoparticles, forming Ru-In superficial immiscible alloys. This surface decoration dramatically affects the catalytic performance of the system, even at small atomic fractions of In added to Ru. The interfaces between Ru and In enabled unexplored methanol productivity from CO2 hydrogenation, which outperformed not o

Adding Value to Secondary Aluminum Casting Alloys: A Review on Trends and Achievements.

Aluminum is a critical element of the circular economy as it can be recycled several times. Moreover, Al recycling is a more economically and environmentally efficient procedure than the primary Al production from ores. Secondary aluminum alloys are mostly used in casting applications since it is possible to accommodate their chemical composition through secondary manufacturing processes. However, the quality of the alloys may be considerably altered during the different steps of the recycling process. Inadequate waste sorting might result in excessive contamination. Iron is the most dangerous

Effect of Mn on the Properties of Powder Metallurgy Ti-2.5Al-xMn Alloys.

Titanium alloys are the ideal material for a wide range of structural applications, but their high cost compared to other metals hinders their adoption. Powder metallurgy and cheap alloying elements can be used to create new Ti alloys. In this study, the simultaneous addition of Al and Mn is considered to manufacture and characterise ternary Ti-2.5Al-Mn alloys obtained via pressing and sintering by varying the Mn content (1-10 wt.%). It is found that the addition of the alloying elements reduces compressibility. Consequently, the amount of porosity increases (8.5 → 10.8%) with the amount of Mn

Characterization of the deformation behaviors under uniaxial stress for bicontinuous nanoporous amorphous alloys.

In this paper, the deformation behaviors of Cu50Zr50 bicontinuous nanoporous amorphous alloys (BNAMs) under uniaxial tension/compression are explored by molecular dynamics simulations. Scaling laws between mechanical properties and relative density are investigated. The results demonstrate that the bending deformation of the ligament is the main elastic deformation mechanism under tension. Necking and subsequent fracture of ligaments are the primary failure mechanism under tension. Under tensile loading, shear bands emerge near the plastic hinges for the BNAMs with large porosities. The typica

Recent progress in single-atom alloys: Synthesis, properties, and applications in environmental catalysis.

Heterogeneous catalysts have made outstanding advancements in pollutants elimination as well as energy and materials production over the past decades. Single-atom alloys (SAAs) are novel environmental catalysts prepared by dispersing single metal atoms on other metals. Integrating the advantages of single atom and alloys, SAAs can maximize atom utilization, reduce the use of noble metals and enhance catalytic performances. The synergistic, electronic and geometric effects of SAAs are effective to modulate the activation energy and adsorption strength, consequently breaking linear scaling relat

Cyanide-free environment-friendly alternative to copper electroplating for zinc die-cast alloys.

In this paper, a cyanide-free electroplating bath containing glutamate as a complexing agent is investigated as an environment-friendly alternative for copper plating on zinc die-cast alloys. Glutamate reacts with copper in an aqueous solution that exhibits similar copper cyanide properties by forming complexes. The electroplating bath pH is chosen from equilibrium diagrams to avoid the formation of insoluble complexes and oxides at varying copper-to-glutamate molar ratio. The plating bath's electrochemical response on a stationary electrode confirms that a 1:3 molar ratio between copper and g

Novel hydroxyapatite/graphene oxide/collagen bioactive composite coating on Ti16Nb alloys by electrodeposition.

A novel implant coating material containing graphene oxide (GO) and collagen (COL), and hydroxyapatite (HA) was fabricated with the aid of tannic acid by electrodeposition. The surface of Ti16Nb alloy was subjected to anodic oxidation, and then HA-GO coating was applied to Ti16Nb surface by cathodic method. Then, COL was deposited on the surface of the HA-GO coating by the biomimetic method. HA, HA-GO, HA-GO-COL coatings on the surface of the Ti16Nb alloy have increased the corrosion resistance by the formation of a barrier layer on the surface. For HA-GO-COL coating, the highest corrosion res

Influence of surface contaminations on the hydrogen storage behaviour of metal hydride alloys.

Hydrogen storage in metal hydrides is a promising alternative to common storage methods. The surface of a metal hydride plays an important part in the absorption of hydrogen, since important partial reaction steps take place here. The development of surface contaminations and their influence on hydrogen absorption is examined by means of absorption experiments and surface analysis, using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermal desorption mass spectrometry (TDMS) and secondary neutral mass spectrometry (SNMS), in this work. All investigations were carried out on a modern AB(2) metal hyd

A new approach to the hazard classification of alloys based on transformation/dissolution.

Most of the metals produced for commercial application enter into service as alloys which, together with metals and all other chemicals in commerce, are subject to a hazard identification and classification initiative now being implemented in a number of jurisdictions worldwide, including the European Union Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) initiative, effective 1 June 2007. This initiative has considerable implications for environmental protection and market access. While a method for the hazard identification and classification of metals is availabl

Influence of surface treatment on adherence energy of alloys used in bonded prosthetics.

Usually, shear or tensile tests are used to assess bond strengths between resin and metal. In this study, a cleavage test, the Double Cantilever Beam test, was performed to measure the adherence energy in air and in water between a 4-META resin, and five alloys (palladium, palladium-silver, gold, cobalt-chromium and nickel-chromium alloys) whose surfaces have been treated by sandblasting only or by two methods of silica coating (Silicoater MD, Rocatec) or by painting with a primer (V-Primer). Results showed that, after storage in water, it is difficult to divide the studied alloys into a denta

Biological effects of palladium and risk of using palladium in dental casting alloys.

In dentistry, palladium is a very common component of dental casting alloys of all types, and its use has increased over the past several decades in response to the increased cost of gold. However, there have been recent controversies, particularly in Germany, over possible adverse biological effects of using palladium in dental alloys. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to review the known biological effects of palladium and the likelihood that these effects can be caused by dental alloys which contain palladium. In an ionic form and at sufficiently high concentrations, palladium has tox
