Perspectives of future water sources in Qatar by phytoremediation: biodiversity at ponds and modern approach.

Anthropogenic and industrial wastewater (IWW) could be an additional future source of water to support the needs of the people of the State of Qatar. New lagoons have been built using modern technologies to optimize water use and waste recycling, as well as increasing the green spaces around the country. To achieve successful development of these new lagoons, lessons should be learned from the old ponds by examining their biodiversity, ecology, and the roles played by aquatic plants and algae to remediate wastewaters at these ponds. The perspectives of using IWW (from oil and gas activities),

Dynamic changes in sensitization to specific aeroallergens in children raised in a desert environment.

BACKGROUND: Allergen skin test reactivity and total serum IgE are objective measures used to characterize and help diagnose allergic diseases. Cross-sectional studies have shown that overall aeroallergen skin test reactivity increases throughout childhood. However, little attention has been paid to whether individual aeroallergen remittance occurs, which could distort or mask relationships to disease. OBJECTIVE: To access the incidence and remittance of skin test reactions to individual allergens in children aged 6-11 years. METHODS: Longitudinal sensitization to six aeroallergens and total

Integrating Multivariate Analysis and DNA Barcoding for Amaranth Germplasm Characterization and Promising Genotype Selection.

Amaranth (Amaranthus spp.) is a multifaceted genus of C4 plants with significant nutritional and agronomic potential, yet it remains underutilized in mainstream agriculture. Despite growing interest in Amaranth, most germplasm studies have used either phenotypic or molecular approaches alone, lacking integration. Multivariate methods have not been systematically applied to identify promising genotypes, and species-specific selection indices for grain Amaranth remain unexplored. To address these gaps, this study comprehensively characterized 84 Amaranth genotypes representing multiple species (

Toxic Plants and Their Impact on Livestock Health and Economic Losses: A Comprehensive Review.

Plants are important components in sustaining the life of humans and animals, balancing ecosystems, providing animal feed and edible food for human consumption, and serving as sources of traditional and modern medicine. However, plants can be harmful to both animals and humans when ingested, leading to poisoning regardless of the quantity consumed. This presents significant risks to livestock health and can impede economic growth. In several developing countries, including Ethiopia, traditional communities have depended on medicinal plants for treating livestock and human diseases. The inciden

Alteration of matrix metalloproteinase-3 O-glycan structure as a biomarker for disease activity of rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Nearly all secreted proteins are glycosylated, and serum glycoproteins that exhibit disease-associated glycosylation changes have potential to be biomarkers. In rheumatoid arthritis (RA), C-reactive protein (CRP), and matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) are widely used as serologic biomarkers, but they lack sufficient specificity or precision. We performed comparative glycosylation profiling of MMP-3 using a recently developed antibody-overlay lectin microarray technology that allows semicomprehensive and quantitative analysis of specific protein glycosylation to develop an RA-speci

Sugarbeet leaf spot disease (Cercospora beticola Sacc.)dagger.

UNLABELLED: SUMMARY Leaf spot disease caused by Cercospora beticola Sacc. is the most destructive foliar pathogen of sugarbeet worldwide. In addition to reducing yield and quality of sugarbeet, the control of leaf spot disease by extensive fungicide application incurs added costs to producers and repeatedly has selected for fungicide-tolerant C. beticola strains. The genetics and biochemistry of virulence have been examined less for C. beticola as compared with the related fungi C. nicotianae, C. kikuchii and C. zeae-maydis, fungi to which the physiology of C. beticola is often compared. Indigenous and traditional plants: South African parents' knowledge, perceptions and uses and their children's sensory acceptance.

BACKGROUND: The dietary shift from indigenous and traditional plants (ITPs) to cash crops and exotic plant food sources increases the risk of malnutrition and other nutrition-related non-communicable diseases, especially in poor rural communities. Farm communities in South Africa have been associated with poor nutritional status and extreme poverty. ITPs have been found to be affordable sources of several micronutrients. However, knowledge of and the use of these plants are declining, and little is known about the child's acceptance of dishes prepared with ITPs. This knowledge can be used to i

The sourdough fermentation may enhance the recovery from intestinal inflammation of coeliac patients at the early stage of the gluten-free diet.

PURPOSE: This study aimed at investigating the effect of corn, rice and amaranth gluten-free (GF) sourdoughs on the release of nitric oxide (NO) and synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines by duodenal mucosa biopsies of eight coeliac disease (CD) patients. METHODS: Selected lactic acid bacteria were used as starters for the manufacture of corn, rice or amaranth sourdoughs. Chemically acidified doughs, without bacterial starters, and doughs started with baker's yeast alone were also manufactured from the same GF matrices. Pepsin-trypsin (PT) digests were produced from all sourdoughs and doughs

Multitarget Amaranth Peptides: ACE Inhibition, ACE2 Modulation, and Bioavailability Assessment.

Hypertension, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, is largely regulated by the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). This study evaluates the multitarget potential of three amaranth-derived peptides -SFNLPILR, FNLPILR, and AFEDGFEWVSFK- previously identified as renin inhibitors. We assessed their ability to inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), modulate ACE2 activity, and their bioavailability. In vitro assays demonstrated that SFNLPILR and FNLPILR are potent ACE inhibitors (IC₅₀ = 0.075 and 0.055 mM, respectively), with selective or minimal modulation of ACE2 enzymatic activity. B
