Features of the Choroidal Structure in Children With Anisometropic Amblyopia.

PURPOSE: To examine the choroidal structure in children with anisometropic amblyopia using the binarization method. METHODS: Thirty children with unilateral anisometropic amblyopia and 30 healthy age- and sex-matched controls were included in the study. Choroidal thickness was measured with optical coherence tomography. The choroidal layer was examined with the binarization method using ImageJ software (National Institutes of Health). The total choroidal area, stromal area, luminal area, luminal area to stromal area ratio, and choroidal vascular index were calculated. The values were compared

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Patients with Amblyopia.

To determine the optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) parameters including foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and vessel density (VD) in the amblyopic eyes compared with the fellow sound eyes and the eyes of the non-amblyopic subjects. In this case-control study, a total of 23 eyes from unilateral amblyopic children were included as cases. The sound eye of the amblyopic children was considered as the internal control and the right eyes of the non-amblyopic children were considered as the external control. All participants underwent image recording with OCTA. In the present study, an equal

Observations on the relationship between anisometropia, amblyopia and strabismus.

We investigated the potential causal relationships between anisometropia, amblyopia and strabismus, specifically to determine whether either amblyopia or strabismus interfered with emmetropization. We analyzed data from non-human primates that were relevant to the co-existence of anisometropia, amblyopia and strabismus in children. We relied on interocular comparisons of spatial vision and refractive development in animals reared with 1) monocular form deprivation; 2) anisometropia optically imposed by either contact lenses or spectacle lenses; 3) organic amblyopia produced by laser ablation o

A retrospective analysis of children with anisometropic amblyopia in Nepal.

PURPOSE: Anisometropia is one of the main causes of amblyopia. This study was conducted to investigate the association between the depth of amblyopia and the magnitude of anisometropia. METHODS: A retrospective record review was conducted at the Nepal Eye Hospital between July 2006 and June 2011. Those children included in this study were aged ≤13 years and diagnosed with unilateral anisometropic amblyopia, no strabismus and ocular pathology. Associations between the depth of amblyopia and the age and/or gender of the subjects, the laterality of the amblyopic eyes, the type and magnitude of r

Neuronal projections from V1 to V2 in amblyopia.

The mechanism of amblyopia in children with congenital cataract is not understood fully, but studies in macaques have shown that geniculate synapses are lost in striate cortex (V1). To search for other projection abnormalities in amblyopia, the pathway from V1 to V2 was examined using a triple-label technique in three animals raised with monocular suture. [(3)H]proline was injected into one eye to label the ocular dominance columns. Cholera toxin B subunit conjugated to gold (CTB-Au) was injected into V2 to label V1 projection neurons. Alternate sections were processed for cytochrome oxidase (

The potential cost-effectiveness of amblyopia screening programs.

PURPOSE: To estimate the incremental cost-effective-ness of amblyopia screening at preschool and kindergarten, the costs and benefits of three amblyopia screening scenarios were compared to no screening and to each other: (1) acuity/stereopsis (A/S) screening at kindergarten, (2) A/S screening at preschool and kindergarten, and (3) photoscreening at preschool and A/S screening at kindergarten. METHODS: A probabilistic microsimulation model of amblyopia natural history and response to treatment with screening costs and outcomes estimated from two state programs was programmed. The probability

[The lazy eye - contemporary strategies of amblyopia treatment].

Amblyopia is a condition of decreased monocular or binocular visual acuity caused by form deprivation or abnormal binocular interaction. Amblyopia is the most common cause of monocular vision loss in children with a prevalence of 2 to 5%. During the last decade, several prospective randomized studies have influenced our clinical management. Based on these studies, optimum refractive correction should be prescribed first. However, most patients will need additional occlusion therapy which is still considered the «gold standard» of amblyopia management. Now much lower doses have been shown to be

Impaired temporal, not just spatial, resolution in amblyopia.

PURPOSE: In amblyopia, neuronal deficits deteriorate spatial vision including visual acuity, possibly because of a lack of use-dependent fine-tuning of afferents to the visual cortex during infancy; but temporal processing may deteriorate as well. METHODS: Temporal, rather than spatial, resolution was investigated in patients with amblyopia by means of a task based on time-defined figure-ground segregation. Patients had to indicate the quadrant of the visual field where a purely time-defined square appeared. RESULTS: The results showed a clear decrease in temporal resolution of patients' amb

The effect of amblyopia on fine motor skills in children.

PURPOSE: In an investigation of the functional impact of amblyopia in children, the fine motor skills of amblyopes and age-matched control subjects were compared. The influence of visual factors that might predict any decrement in fine motor skills was also explored. METHODS: Vision and fine motor skills were tested in a group of children (n = 82; mean age, 8.2 +/- 1.7 [SD] years) with amblyopia of different causes (infantile esotropia, n = 17; acquired strabismus, n = 28; anisometropia, n = 15; mixed, n = 13; and deprivation n = 9), and age-matched control children (n = 37; age 8.3 +/- 1.3 y

Pupillography of automated swinging flashlight test in amblyopia.

Relative afferent pupillary defects (RAPDs) in amblyopia have been reported, and it is widely accepted that amblyopes can have an RAPD. We investigated whether or not this could be confirmed by the use of binocular pupillography. We examined twelve patients (6 males and 6 females, aged 7-57 years) with unilateral amblyopia associated with anisometropia and/or strabismus, using binocular infrared video pupillography (Newopto, Kawasaki, Japan). Eight normal subjects were also tested in the same manner. Two patients' data had to be excluded because of poor recording quality. Only one patient with

Echobiometric study of ocular growth in patients with amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: The natural evolution toward emmetropia is governed by genetic factors, but experiments with animals have demonstrated that a feedback mechanism that depends on visual function may regulate ocular growth. We attempted to verify this hypothesis in school-age patients with amblyopia by observing the ocular growth and the refractive state in the fixating and nonfixating eye in myopia and hypermetropia. This situation simulates the animal model. METHODS: In 30 consecutive school-age patients with amblyopia, we prospectively evaluated axial length with echobiometry and the refractive s

[Amblyopia, refractive errors and strabismus in congenital ptosis].

The incidence of amblyopia in the normal population is 2-6%, whereas among patients with congenital ptosis it can be as high as 50%. We reviewed 146 cases of congenital ptosis in patients aged between 5 months and 15 years and compared them to a control group of 34 age- and sex-matched patients. In 78 children (156 eyes) reliable optotype visual acuity could be obtained. Fifty-three eyes (34%) were amblyopic. Ametropia was responsible for 34% and anisometropia for 28.3% of the amblyopia cases. In 25.4% of cases strabismus, and in 11.34% stimulus deprivation, was the reason for the development

Timing of amblyopia therapy relative to strabismus surgery.

BACKGROUND: It is taught that amblyopia must be fully reversed before surgery for esotropia is undertaken to achieve the best surgical outcome. In some cases, this means delaying surgery for many months. The alternative of operating early, before the completion of amblyopia therapy, and continuing to treat the amblyopia postoperatively has not been evaluated previously. METHODS: Forty-seven children younger than 8 years of age were identified with a history of both amblyopia and esotropia. They had no other ocular, medical, or neurologic abnormalities. They had no prior strabismus surgery. Of

Contact lenses in the management of myopic anisometropic amblyopia.

We treated 16 patients aged 1 1/2 to 11 years with myopic anisometropic amblyopia with contact-lens correction of refractive error and occlusion. The degree of visual improvement compared favourably with that reported with the use of spectacles. There were no complications from contact lenses, and only one patient required anesthesia for fitting. Contact lenses appear to be more satisfactory than spectacle lenses in the management of myopic anisometropic amblyopia in regard to cosmesis, comfort, and treatment compliance. Patients with myelinated retinal nerve fibers and unilateral severe myopi
