Ottawa's Carleton University cancelled a February blood-donor clinic after the Red Cross failed to hold sensitivity-training sessions for its volunteers. The sessions were requested after students complained that the organization's screening procedures are insensitive and offend gay students. The Red Cross maintains that rigorous screening, including questions about high-risk sexual behaviour, is essential if the blood supply is to be protected. In March a compromise was announced: the Red Cross will begin sensitivity training for its volunteer workers in April and blood-donor clinics will ret

Hostility and depression were examined in male psychiatric patients who exhibited either assaultive (n = 40) or suicide-attempting behavior (n = 20). Both groups were compared to a sample of nonviolent males (n = 22) to provide a basis for interpreting the absolute as well as relative magnitude of these variables in relation to their violent behavior. Both suicide-attempting and assaultive patients were characterized by high levels of hostility and depression, as evidenced by significantly higher scores than those of the nonviolent group on almost all indices. Assaultive subjects evidenced rel

BACKGROUND: The processing-mode theory of rumination proposes that an abstract mode of rumination results in more maladaptive consequences than a concrete ruminative mode. It is supported by evidence mostly from the area of depression and little is known of the relative consequences of abstract versus concrete rumination for anger.
AIMS: We investigated the differential effects of abstract versus concrete rumination about anger on individuals' current affect. We hypothesized that abstract rumination would increase current anger and negative affect, and decrease positive affect, to a greater e

This paper presents a study of the causes of anger of students who ride electric bicycles on a university campus. A questionnaire survey of 370 students in university was conducted using a electric bicycle rider anger scale. Structural equation model is used to analyze the interaction between pedestrians, traffic management, other riders and environment and riders themselves. The results show that the overall level of students' riding anger on the campus was not high, and the interaction with the surrounding environment mainly reflected the riding anger of college students. The interaction of

Tourette disorder is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome of childhood onset characterized by multiple motor and phonic tics and is associated with high rates of psychiatric comorbidity. Symptoms of impulsive aggression (explosive outbursts or "rage") are commonly encountered in the clinical setting, cause significant morbidity, and pose diagnostic and treatment challenges. These symptoms may be multifactorial in etiology and result from a complex interplay of illness severity and psychosocial factors. Treatment strategies require careful differential diagnostic evaluation and include both beha

This study analyzes the association between trait driving anger and driving styles in a sample of Colombian professional drivers. Additionally, the internal and external validity of the Deffenbacher's Driving Anger Scale (DAS-14) was examined in the study population. The DAS-14 and the Spanish Version of the Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory (S-MDSI) were administered to 492 urban bus and taxi operators. Average trait driving anger scores in the study population were similar to those reported in previous validation studies from Spain, Argentina, China, and Malaysia. After deleting three

Recent studies reveal that childhood emotional abuse (CEA) is the trauma most clearly associated with adult eating pathology. Yet, relatively little is understood about psychological mechanisms linking these distal experiences. Anger's mediational role in the relationship between CEA and adult binge eating (BE) is explored in a community-based sample of 498 adult women (mean age 44). Detailed telephone interviews assess BE (7 items), CEA (single item), and unresolved anger (single item) along with self-criticism (modified Rosenberg self-esteem scale), depression and anxiety symptoms (BSI sub-s

Intermittent explosive disorder (IED) in DSM-5 represents a disorder of recurrent, problematic, reactive (i.e., affective or impulsive), aggressive behavior that, over the lifetime, affects about 5-6% of individuals in the United States. While aggression is also observed in those with psychopathic personality, aggression in this context is frequently proactive rather than reactive, and neurobiological study suggests important differences between those with proactive aggression/psychopathy and those with reactive aggression. In this paper, we conducted two sets of analyses. First, a phenomenolo

We examined relationships between depressive rumination, anger rumination, and features of borderline personality disorder in a sample of 93 students with a wide range of borderline symptoms. All completed self-report measures of borderline features; trait-level negative affect; depressive and anger rumination; and current symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Depressive and anger rumination were strongly associated with borderline features after controlling for comorbid symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Both types of rumination showed significant incremental validity over tr

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify type of anger expression and mental health in middle aged women.
METHODS: From August to October 2005, survey data were collected by using the State Trait Anger Expression Inventory and Symptom Check List-90-Revision (SCL). Participants (1,442) were classified into four types of anger expression by K-mean cluster analysis. For collecting interview data for content analysis, 18 participants (4-5 participants from each type of anger expression) were recruited. The interview data were collected between March and September 2006.
RESULTS: The ave

The goals of the study were to compare anger expressions in individuals with eating disorders and healthy controls, and to explore the relation among eating disorder symptoms, comorbid psychopathology, personality traits, and impulsive behaviours. Participants comprised 135 eating disorder patients consecutively admitted to our unit and 103 healthy controls. Assessment measures included the Eating Disorders Inventory 2 (EDI-2), Bulimic Investigatory Test Edinburgh (BITE), Symptom Checklist-Revised (SCL-90-R), Social Avoidance Distress Scale (SAD), Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised (T

This study examined the combined effects of caffeine and the personality attribute of trait-anger on the speed of psychomotor vigilance performance during sleep deprivation. 23 young adult soldiers (19 male) were administered the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-2 when well-rested. Participants were then sleep deprived for three consecutive nights (77 hours total) during which they completed repeated psychomotor vigilance testing. Half of the participants received four doses of oral caffeine (200 mg every 2 hr.; 800 mg total) each night, while the other half were administered a placebo.

The anger-superiority hypothesis states that angry faces are detected more efficiently than friendly faces. Previously research used schematized stimuli, which minimizes perceptual confounds, but violates ecological validity. The authors argue that a confounding of appearance and meaning is unavoidable and even unproblematic if real faces are presented. Four experiments tested carefully controlled photos in a search-asymmetry design. Experiments 1 and 2 revealed more efficient detection of an angry face among happy faces than vice versa. Experiment 3 indicated that the advantage was due to the

The common physiological rationale for migraine, anger, and epileptic attacks is discussed. The potential importance of homeostatic reactions in brain blood perfusion is described. The author speculates that these attacks are induced to meet some urgent biological needs. Each attack of migraine, anger, and epilepsy results in increased regional cerebral blood flow, with hypoperfusion being shown in inter-icteric states. This hypoperfusion may also be related to cerebral ischemic disease, organic change, some critical condition, or vasoconstriction due to sympathetic hyperactivity. Migraine att

We tested the hypotheses that the hostility and anger scales of the Buss and Perry (1992) [Buss, A. H. & Perry, M. (1992). The Aggression Questionnaire. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 63, 452-459.] Aggression Questionnaire would predict anger in college students in response to mistreatment. We found low and high hostility groups did not differ in anger at baseline or after completing a task without provocation, but the high hostility group reported greater anger than the low group after the onset of provocation, which required all students to redo completed tasks because some st

Central obesity is an important risk factor for chronic disease. Its etiology remains unclear. We examined whether anger and hostility, ie, psychological attributes that influence cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, prospectively predict central visceral obesity across 13 years. Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) was determined by x-ray computed tomography (CT) at the L4-L5 disc space in a population-based sample of 157 postmenopausal Healthy Women Study participants. Standardized tests were completed to measure separately trait anger (anger frequency and intensity), style of anger expression (

BACKGROUND: . Cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) are two prominent evidence-based treatments for social anxiety disorder (SAD). It is not clear, however, whether outcomes of these two treatments are moderated by similar factors. For example, whereas anger suppression and anger expression each predict outcomes in cognitive- behavioral group therapy (CBGT), it is unknown whether they differentially influence outcomes in CBGT versus MBSR.
METHODS: . One hundred eight participants with SAD were randomized to CBGT, MBSR or Waitlist (WL). WL participants were

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether mood states other than anger can modify the association between anger and pain intensity in individuals with chronic pain.
METHODS: We analysed 22,059 participants with chronic pain, including 214 participants with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), who completed a questionnaire. The Profile of Mood States short form (POMS-SF) was used to assess six dimensions of mood states (anger-hostility, tension-anxiety, depression-dejection, confusion, fatigue, and vigour). A numerical rating scale (NRS) assessed pain intensity. We examined the association between anger-hostil

OBJECTIVE: Psychiatric treatment research has too frequently neglected anger. "Anger management" is widely used to tamp anger down. Yet understanding and expressing anger often have clinical and interpersonal value. Few data address anger in the context of treating patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The authors hypothesized the clinical utility of anger expression rather than suppression, particularly using interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), which focuses on interpersonal handling of emotions. IPT effects on anger have barely been researched.
METHODS: Secondary data analyses

INTRODUCTION: The present study aimed to identify brain regions sensitive to emotion-specific acoustic parameters in healthy individuals.
METHODS: Three pseudo-words in the form of one stimulus were consecutively spoken with neutral and angry prosody. Then, we changed the acoustic parameters (mean fundamental frequency [F0], intensity, and speech tempo) in angry prosody. The stimuli were presented in a functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment to detect anger or neutrality.
RESULTS: Stronger activation in the left superior temporal gyrus (STG) and Heschl's gyrus (HG) was observed when
