OBJECTIVE: Surgical outcomes and prognostic factors were analyzed to determine what factors increase the probability of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) recurrence.
METHODS: Ninety-seven males with JNA were diagnosed and underwent surgery at Fudan University Affiliated Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital from 1997 to 2006. Clinical data were extracted from medical records and were used in the statistical analysis.
RESULTS: The total recurrence rate of JNA was 39.2% after the initial surgery. A patient whose tumour staging was higher was more likely to have a recurrence than a patien

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a locally aggressive, although histologically benign, vascular neoplasm. This neoplasm accounts for 0.05% of head and neck tumours and affects almost exclusively male adolescents. Surgery is considered as the primary treatment of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. Other treatment modalities such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy are still recommended for intracranial extension involving the cavernous sinus or the internal carotid artery. We report a rare case of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, further complicated with a Kennedy syndrome in a 34 year-old women. The treatmen

AIMS: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare tumour occurring almost exclusively in young adult males. Although histologically benign, it can be locally aggressive with a significant recurrence rate. The finding of activating beta-catenin gene mutations in the stromal cells indicates these are the neoplastic cells and supports the association of JNA and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Previous immunohistochemical studies have demonstrated a null or focal myoepithelial immunophenotype in the stromal cells. Recently, expression of several growth factors and oncoproteins inclu

OBJECTIVE: The juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a benign neoplasm that affects mostly young males. Preoperative embolisation is an accepted treatment to reduce perioperative bleeding, however, severe complications may accompany these invasive procedures.
CASE REPORT: One 14-year-old JNA patient with severe epistaxis was transferred to us for treatment. Unfortunately, a left middle cerebral artery infarction occurred during the embolisation procedure. Right side hemiplegia and left eye blindness were noted. Nine months later, another course of embolisation and surgical treatment w

Tuberous sclerosis is an inheritable disease of varied manifestations. Hallmarks of the disease have historically been identified as infantile seizures, severe mental retardation, and facial growths. The facial lesions were formerly termed adenoma sebaceum, but are now known to be angiofibroma. We present a patient who was referred for management of large facial lesions complicated by intermittent hemorrhage. A combination of shave excision and dermabrasion led to a symptomatic and cosmetic improvement.

Angiofibroma is a rare, benign vascular tumor traditionally associated with the nasopharynx of adolescent males. In contrast, extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas (ENAs) exhibit a wider demographic distribution and may arise in diverse anatomical sites. We report a case involving a 45 year-old woman presenting with a 4 month history of a mass located on the lateral border of the anterior tongue. Complete excision under local anesthesia was performed. Histopathological analysis demonstrated a proliferation of irregular vascular channels lined by benign endothelial cells, set within a fibrovascular

BACKGROUND: While mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors have revolutionized the management of angiofibroma in tuberous sclerosis complex (TS), physical modalities such as laser are still indicated for recalcitrant lesions.
OBJECTIVE: The authors performed a systematic review of the efficacy and safety of laser treatment for TS-related facial angiofibroma.
METHODS: The electronic databases such as MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science were searched from inception to October 10, 2023, for eligible records.
RESULTS: Forty-seven articles

INTRODUCTION: Cellular angiofibroma is a benign vascular neoplasm that typically arises in the paratesticular region in men and is easily confused with inguinal or scrotal hernia.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a cellular angiofibroma arising from the spermatic cord of a 74-year-old Caucasian man. Initially, the lesion was confused with a scrotal hernia, but imaging revealed a subcutaneous, inhomogeneous, but well-circumscribed lesion to the surrounding tissues with rich vasculature. Surgical resection of the lesion was performed. Histology revealed a benign tumor of vascular origin

Tuberous sclerosis (TSC) is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder with cutaneous lesions of ash leaf hypopigmented macules, shagreen patches, periungual fibromas, facial angiofibromas, forehead fibrous plaques, confetti hypopigmentation, and poliosis. Multiple facial angiofibromas are a pathognomonic feature of TSC. Unilateral facial angiofibromas, however, represent a rare variant of TSC, as only 6 cases are reported in the literature. We describe a case of a 52-year-old man who presented with unilateral facial angiofibromas and poliosis without other features of TSC.

Although surgery is regarded as the mainstay of treatment for juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas (JNAs), ancillary treatment modalities such as radiotherapy and on rare occasions chemotherapy are still recommended by many for intracranial extension with apparent radiologic involvement of the cavernous sinus and internal carotid artery. Further, most authors undertaking surgical excision of this subgroup of patients would recommend a lateral or combined frontal and lateral approach for its removal. In a series of 49 cases of JNA, 14 were found during surgery to have intracranial extradural e

BACKGROUND: Tuberous sclerosis is a complex disorder of hamartoma formation in many organs, particularly the skin, brain, eye, kidney, and heart. The characteristic skin lesions are angiofibromas (AF), the shagreen patch, periungual fibromas, and "ash-leaf" white macules. Treatment for AF has previously included electrocoagulation, electrodesiccation and curettage, dermabrasion, excision, cryosurgery, and oral 13-cis retinoic acid. Both argon and CO2 lasers have been used in isolated cases to treat AF.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this work is the study of the application of three different lase

BACKGROUND: Cellular angiofibroma is a rare, benign mesenchymal tumor most commonly arising in the vulvovaginal region in middle-aged to elderly women. Despite its indolent nature, it is frequently misdiagnosed due to a nonspecific clinical presentation and its resemblance to other vulvar masses.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 65-year-old postmenopausal woman with a neglected, slowly growing giant pedunculated mass on her left labia majora that developed over 5 years. The patient underwent surgical excision and cosmetic reconstruction, with an uneventful postoperative recovery. Histopath

BACKGROUND: Staging systems for nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (NA) have traditionally shown inconsistencies in anatomical prioritization and have not adequately incorporated functional considerations.
METHODS: A novel, comprehensive staging system was developed through expert consensus (N = 8) using the Delphi method. This system consists of three components: (1) Composite Anatomical Status (CAS) comprising of tumor extensions in all anterior, posterior, lateral, and superior directions; (2) Composite Symptom Score (CSS) that grades the patient's clinical symptomatology; and (3) Functional Perf

Endoscopic and open microsurgical approaches for pediatric patients are useful for a wide variety of skull base pathologies. A hybrid, cranioendoscopic approach may be beneficial in improving surgical resection for complex lesions. A case of a 13-year-old boy with a large juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma extending through the nasopharynx and pterygopalatine fossa into the maxillary, sphenoid, and cavernous sinuses is demonstrated via an endoscopic, transnasal and frontotemporal, extended middle cranial fossa microsurgical approach. Management of a large pediatric tumor via narrow nasal pas

Somatostatin (SST) cell surface receptors (SSTRs) are expressed in many different malignant, benign, and neuroendocrine tumors. SSTRs are also expressed in the endothelium of human vessels during angiogenesis and not in the nonproliferating vessels. We present a case of 19-year-old boy with juvenile nasal angiofibroma (JNA), who underwent 68Ga-DOTANOC PET/CT to explore SSTRs expression and theranostic potential. The scan revealed high uptake in the tumor, and in certain areas, the uptake was similar to that of the pituitary gland. Performance of DOTANOC PET/CT in JNA opens up new frontiers wit

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare, hypervascular, benign tumor which is mainly seen among male adolescents. The tumor typically originates from the sphenopalatine fossa, but could spread through natural foramens and fissures. There are some reports of atypical growth of this tumor in literature but the intraluminal growth, which could be seen in paraganglioma and glomus tumors, has not reported yet in angiofibroma. In this article we present a case of extensive angiofoibroma with intraluminal involvement of the ophthalmic vein. Our patient was a 19-year-old boy with a compla
