Fat-containing salivary gland tumors: a review.

Fat-containing tumors of the salivary glands are uncommon. Their wide histological spectrum varies from pure lipomatous neoplasms similar to their cutaneous and soft tissue counterparts to mixed lipoepithelial lesions specific to the salivary glands. With few exceptions, these uncommon lesions affect mainly the elderly, with a mean age at presentation of ≥ 50 years and show a predilection for males. A few cases occur in childhood; some of them represent congenital lesions. In decreasing order of frequency, ordinary (soft-tissue type) lipoma, oncocytic lipoadenoma, non-oncocytic sialolipoma, an

Limited segmental resection of symptomatic lower-extremity lymphodystrophic tissue in high-risk patients.

In obese patients, lymphodystrophic tissue can create large masses that are microscopically indistinguishable from chronic lymphedema. This tissue can be disabling, especially in the lower extremities. The tissue is refractory to conservative therapy and is prone to cellulitis and abscess formation. The patients are regarded as being at high risk for surgical complications due to obesity and related illnesses. We report two cases of patients with lesions severely limiting walking. The two patients weighed 490 and 520 lb, respectively. One patient had hypertension and asthma; the other had arrh

Primary cardiac synovial sarcoma: a case report and literature review.

Primary cardiac synovial sarcoma is a rare disease. A 51-year-old man visited our hospital with the chief complaint of palpitations and shortness of breath while exercising. Copious bloody pericardial effusion and a multicystic intrapericardial tumor were detected. A primary cardiac malignant tumor was suspected, an open-chest tumor resection was performed with the objectives of diagnosis and treatment. Histologically, the tumor cells were uniformly spindle-shaped with an ovoid or oval nucleus, they had proliferated in fascicular fashion. In addition myxoid degeneration, a hemangiopericytomato

Esophageal Lipoma and Liposarcoma: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal lipomatous tumors, also reported as fibrovascular polyp, fibrolipoma, angiolipoma, and liposarcoma, account for less than 1% of all benign mesenchymal submucosal tumors of the esophagus. Clinical presentation and therapy may differ based on location, size, and morphology. A comprehensive and updated systematic review of the literature is lacking. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed according to PRISMA guidelines. Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane, and Medline databases were consulted using MESH keywords. Non-English written articles and abstracts were ex

Primary angiosarcoma arising in an angiomyolipoma of the kidney: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Primary angiosarcoma of the kidney is a rare and aggressive malignant tumor presenting with a recognizable vascular differentiation. Its prognosis is fatal and the pathogenesis remains unclear. Renal angiomyolipoma is a relatively infrequent renal cortical neoplasm and is composed of variable proportions of adipose tissue, spindle cells, epithelioid smooth muscle cells and abnormal thick-walled blood vessels. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we reported a case in which a 64-year-old woman presenting with the chief complaint of a progressively enlarged mass in the left abdomen. Abdominal c

Urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) is critical for progression of tuberous sclerosis complex 2 (TSC2)-deficient tumors.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a fatal lung disease associated with germline or somatic inactivating mutations in tuberous sclerosis complex genes (TSC1 or TSC2). LAM is characterized by neoplastic growth of smooth muscle-α-actin-positive cells that destroy lung parenchyma and by the formation of benign renal neoplasms called angiolipomas. The mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) inhibitor rapamycin slows progression of these diseases but is not curative and associated with notable toxicity at clinically effective doses, highlighting the need for better understanding LAM's molec

Clinical and Molecular Investigation of Familial Multiple Lipomatosis: Variants in the HMGA2 Gene.

BACKGROUND: Familial multiple lipomatosis (FML) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by the slow growth of encapsulated nodules spread across the trunk and limbs. Currently, there is no specific etiology; therefore, its molecular and biological bases need to be better understood. High-throughput sequencing technologies appear to be a cost-effective tool and have a pivotal role in elucidating different genodermatoses. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to perform a clinical and molecular characterization of constitutional DNA of seven individuals belonging to five unrelated families diagno

[Sonographic appearance of benign subcutaneous nodules--including color Doppler sonography].

OBJECTIVE: Color Doppler sonography is used to distinguish malignant from benign subcutaneous nodules because many malignant tumors show an increased number of vessels. But benign lesions, such as inflammatory epidermal cysts, pilomatricomas, palmoplantar fibromatoses show vascular flow signals. We analyze diagnostic factors for subcutaneous nodules on the basis of ultrasonographic appearance including color Doppler sonography. METHODS: We evaluated with sonography 79 subcutaneous nodules in histopathologically proven cases. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The diagnostic findings for 28 epidermal cy

Acute histologic changes in human renal tumors after cryoablation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cryoablation is a treatment option for some patients with small, exophytic lesions of the kidney. Several investigators have evaluated the effects of cryoablation in normal renal tissue of animals. The purpose of this study was to investigate the tissue changes following cryoablation in human renal tumors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We prospectively evaluated patients with solid renal lesions (1.5-1.8 cm) confirmed by CT, MRI, or both. Metastatic work-up for all patients was negative. All lesions were biopsied prior to freezing. Two patients with bilateral renal tumors unde

Foreign Body (Solder) and Reaction to the Foreign Body Presenting As a Cutaneous Tender Tumor: Case Report and a New Acronym to Aid in Recalling the Differential Diagnosis of Painful Skin Lesions.

Cutaneous tender tumors manifest as painful dermal or subcutaneous masses. Acronyms, a memory aid created from the initial letters of other words, can be used to assist in recalling a list of conditions. We report the case of a man who presented with a painful lesion on his leg; 15 years earlier, hot solder had embedded beneath his skin at that location. The subcutaneous mass was removed, and his symptoms resolved. Microscopic evaluation of the specimen showed a foreign body reaction to metal. Therefore, after correlating his medical history, clinical presentation, and pathology findings, the

Rapamycin and rapalogs for tuberous sclerosis complex.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown potential benefits of rapamycin or rapalogs for treating people with tuberous sclerosis complex. Although everolimus (a rapalog) is currently approved by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and the EMA (European Medicines Agency) for tuberous sclerosis complex-associated renal angiomyolipoma and subependymal giant cell astrocytoma, applications for other manifestations of tuberous sclerosis complex have not yet been established. A systematic review is necessary to establish the clinical value of rapamycin or rapalogs for various manifestations in

A syndrome of spontaneous cerebral and cervical artery dissections with angiolipomatosis. Report of two cases.

A primary or systemic arteriopathy is frequently suspected in patients with spontaneous cerebral or cervical artery dissections. The authors report on two patients with such dissections accompanied by angiolipomatosis, a previously unreported association, and propose a common developmental defect in these patients. A 50-year-old man with subcutaneous angiolipomatosis developed painful monocular blindness. Angiography studies revealed a spontaneous extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection and an ipsilateral fusiform intracranial ICA aneurysm. The ICA dissection was treated with asp

Cystic renal neoplasms and renal neoplasms associated with cystic renal diseases in adults: cross-sectional imaging findings.

Cystic renal neoplasms in adults are a heterogeneous group of tumors with characteristic histogenesis, pathological findings, and variable biological profiles. They include disparate entities that are either biologically benign (lymphangioma, cystic nephroma, and mixed epithelial and stromal tumor) or malignant (cystic renal cell carcinoma, multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma, and primary renal synovial sarcoma). Renal cystic diseases are characterized by cystic changes of the kidneys due to hereditary, developmental, or acquired etiology. Cystic renal diseases such as acquired cystic kid

[Lymphangioleiomyomatosis].

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis is a rare pulmonary disease encountered almost exclusively in women of reproductive age. Pulmonary involvement is characterized by multiple thin-walled cysts in the lungs, recurrent pneumothorax, obstructive lung disorders, and progression to chronic respiratory failure over a mean period of 10 years. Certainty of diagnosis requires a lung biopsy, but international criteria have been proposed for a diagnosis without such a biopsy. International recommendations were recently issued for the diagnosis and treatment of lymphangioleiomyomatosis. Treatment is principally sym

A "V"-Shaped Intraoral Lipoma on the Floor of the Mouth: A Case Report.

A benign soft tissue tumor of mature fat cells is called a lipoma (adipocytes). Lipoma can develop anywhere on the body, although it is uncommon in the mouth. Lipomas that are superficially positioned are often yellowish in color, painless, soft, and non-fluctuating with a thin epithelial surface. As a result, a delicate pattern of blood vessels is frequently seen on the surface. Deeper lesions might not exhibit this finding and, as a result, are not as clinically recognized. Since the patients do not report any subjective clinical symptoms, the dentist often diagnoses such lipomas by accident

Prenatal sonographic diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis complex.

We report the case of a male fetus with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), in whom multiple cardiac rhabdomyomas and renal angiomyolipomas were detected at 33 weeks by ultrasound with additional brain lesions detected on MRI, all confirmed after birth. DNA analysis of the TSC2 gene detected a de novo mutation in the TSC2 gene. Postnatal follow-up and neurological examination were normal, as were the results of Holter monitoring.
