Hippotherapy in neurodevelopmental disorders: a narrative review focusing on cognitive and behavioral outcomes.

Hippotherapy (HT) is a rehabilitative tool inducing psychological and motor improvements using human-horse interaction. HT provides sensory stimulation to the rider through the rhythmic and repetitive movements of the horse, facilitating communication between patients and healthcare professionals, favoring the establishment of a therapeutic alliance. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the effects of HT treatment on cognitive-behavioral processes in neurodevelopmental disorders. We screened studies published between 2002 and 2020 on PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, and Web of Sciences databases

DARK Classics in Chemical Neuroscience: Ibogaine.

The West African iboga plant has been used for centuries by the Bwiti and Mbiri tribes to induce hallucinations during religious ceremonies. Ibogaine, the principal alkaloid responsible for iboga's psychedelic properties, was isolated and sold as an antidepressant in France for decades before its adverse effects precipitated its removal from the market. An ibogaine resurgence in the 1960s was driven by U.S. heroin addicts who claimed that ibogaine cured their opiate addictions. Behavioral pharmacologic studies in animal models provided evidence that ibogaine could blunt self-administration of

Otoferlin gene editing in sheep via CRISPR-assisted ssODN-mediated Homology Directed Repair.

Different mutations of the OTOF gene, encoding for otoferlin protein expressed in the cochlear inner hair cells, induces a form of deafness that is the major cause of nonsyndromic recessive auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder in humans. We report the generation of the first large animal model of OTOF mutations using the CRISPR system associated with different Cas9 components (mRNA or protein) assisted by single strand oligodeoxynucleotides (ssODN) to induce homology-directed repair (HDR). Zygote microinjection was performed with two sgRNA targeting exon 5 and 6 associated to Cas9 mRNA or pro

Endocrine and regenerative mechanisms of adipose-derived stem cells in female infertility.

Infertility remains a global health challenge, particularly in cases involving endometrial damage, diminished ovarian reserve, or poor embryo quality where conventional therapies often fail. Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) have emerged as a promising regenerative option due to their accessibility, multipotency, and paracrine signaling capacity. This review evaluated preclinical and clinical studies investigating ADSCs and their derivatives for uterine, ovarian, and embryo applications in reproductive medicine. Literature searches were conducted in PubMed to July 2025, focusing on studies in

The Specific Forces Applied During Robotic Training That Optimize Recovery of Locomotion in a Rat Model of Spinal Cord Injury.

Background. Conventional physical therapy following neurological injury is an arduous task met with minimal returns and quickly plateauing recovery. Unconventional therapies, such as robotic assisted gait training (RAGT) have not produced the robust clinical gains that we all had hoped. Rodent RAGT is a nascent field, but it works on the same principles as the clinical counterpart. Objective. We have previously investigated the ability of RAGT to enhance the recovery of rats following a cervical spinal cord injury and found that training in a resistive field is detrimental, and training in a n

An innovative minimally-invasive vaginoscopic approach for intrauterine infusion in rats - an infertility perspective.

In fertility research, intrauterine administration in small animals presents significant technical challenges, often necessitating advanced and precise techniques. Historically, surgical methods have been preferred; however, these approaches are complex, invasive and expensive. While less invasive, intravaginal methods are generally performed without direct visualization and lack standardization, which raises the risk of complications and post-procedure mortality. We present a novel, minimally invasive technique that uses video-guided vaginoscopy to overcome these constraints. This technique e

Effects of hippotherapy on motor function of children with cerebral palsy: a systematic review study.

Cerebral palsy includes a spectrum of neurodevelopmental disorders caused by brain damage, leading to impairment of movement, posture, and balance for a lifetime. There are many therapeutic interventions for cerebral palsy. One of them is hippotherapy, an alternative physical therapy. It is a type of equine-assisted activity and therapy where children with cerebral palsy and motor function skills interact with a horse. We aimed to study the effects of hippotherapy, as an alternative therapy, on the motor function of children with cerebral palsy. We performed a review of the latest literature o

Effects of Equine-Assisted Activities and Therapies for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has become a critical public health issue that affects more than 78 million people. In many recent studies, the authors have demonstrated that equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAATs) can substantially improve the social and behavioral skills of children with ASD. However, the qualities of the studies differ, and some authors reached opposite conclusions. In this review, we systematically and objectively examined the effectiveness of EAATs for people with ASD, combining both qualitative and quantitative methods. We searched five databases (PubMed, Scopus,

Targeting inflammation in atherosclerosis: overview, strategy and directions.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic condition characterised by the build-up of plaque in the inner lining of the blood vessels and it is the main underlying cause of cardiovascular disease. The development of atherosclerosis is associated with the accumulation of cholesterol and inflammation. Although effective therapies exist to lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels, some patients still experience cardiovascular events due to persistent inflammation, known as residual inflammatory risk (RIR). Researchers have conducted laboratory and animal studies to investigate the measurement a

[Riding therapy in the rehabilitation of mobility-impaired children].

Riding therapy is a comprehensive and functional form of rehabilitation, in which the rehabilitee, the horse and the riding therapist collaborate in order to achieve individually assigned goals that support rehabilitation. In Finland, riding therapy is therapeutic rehabilitation carried out by riding therapists who have undergone approved training. The therapy is mainly implemented in an individual form, but small group working is also applied, e.g. in the form of pair therapy and therapeutic vaulting. In Europe, this form of rehabilitation has been divided into hippotherapy supporting motor f

Review article: update in trauma anesthesiology: perioperative resuscitation management.

The management of trauma patients has matured significantly since a systematic approach to trauma care was introduced nearly a half century ago. The resuscitation continuum emphasizes the effect that initial therapy has on the outcome of the trauma patient. The initiation of this continuum begins with prompt field medical care and efficient transportation to designated trauma centers, where lifesaving procedures are immediately undertaken. Resuscitation with packed red blood cells and plasma, in parallel with surgical or interventional radiologic source control of bleeding, are the cornerstone

Effect of hypothyroidism on rat peripheral nervous system.

The function and structure of the peripheral nervous system of Sprague-Dawley rats, 3 months after the induction of hypothyroidism by administration of N-propylthiouracil in drinking water, has been studied. The motor action potential amplitude of the caudal nerve showed a significant reduction (p < 0.001) when compared with an age-matched control group of animals. Computer-assisted morphometric analysis of sciatic nerves of hypothyroid rats showed normal distribution and density of myelinated fibers, and a normal axon/myelin ratio. Electron microscopy revealed only minor alterations in axons

Sonothrombolysis Using Microfluidically Produced Microbubbles in a Murine Model of Deep Vein Thrombosis.

The need for safe and effective methods to manage deep vein thrombosis (DVT), given the risks associated with anticoagulants and thrombolytic agents, motivated research into innovative approaches to resolve blood clots. In response to this challenge, sonothrombolysis is being explored as a technique that combines microbubbles, ultrasound, and thrombolytic agents to facilitate the aggressive dissolution of thrombi. Prior studies have indicated that relatively large microbubbles accelerate the dissolution process, either in an in vitro or an arterial model. However, sonothrombolysis using large
