Mental health among Iranian combat veterans with ankle-foot neuromusculoskeletal injuries.

BACKGROUND: Veterans with purely physical disorders, such as ankle-foot neuromusculoskeletal disorders, are often neglected in psychological assessments because mental health evaluations are usually focused on those with a psychological disturbance or with a high percentage of injury. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychological condition of veterans with ankle-foot neuromusculoskeletal disorders. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed between 2014 and 2016 on veterans with war-related ankle-foot injuries living in two provinces of Iran. An information form for demograp

Predicting poor outcome from simple ankle injuries: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Sprained ankles are common and when there are no signs or evidence of a fracture, conventional management is conservative. At present, there are no clinical markers to identify those that may develop persisting instability and disability that would require rehabilitation or surgery. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the nature and extent of soft tissue ankle injuries, and to consider whether the anatomical severity of injury can predict functional outcome. METHODS: Patients attending a local Accident and Emergency Department in Oxford with an acute ankle injury with no clinical requirem

Management of sports injuries of the foot and ankle: an update.

Sporting injuries around the ankle vary from simple sprains that will resolve spontaneously within a few days to severe injuries which may never fully recover and may threaten the career of a professional athlete. Some of these injuries can be easily overlooked altogether or misdiagnosed with potentially devastating effects on future performance. In this review article, we cover some of the common and important sporting injuries involving the ankle including updates on their management and outcomes. Semiextending Nailing for Combined Shaft and Ankle Injuries of the Leg.

Over recent years, orthopaedic traumatologists have been gaining experience with tibial nailing in the extended position. Originally developed to address the complexities of alignment in proximal tibial fractures, this technique has also proven valuable in the treatment of tibial shaft fractures combined with ankle injuries. Depicted in this video presentation is the surgical techniques used to simultaneously address a spiral fracture of the distal tibia associated with a large coronal plane fracture of the tibial articular surface. Discussed are leg positioning, technical aspects of the media

Variants and pitfalls in MR imaging of foot and ankle injuries.

Foot and ankle injuries are very common, particularly among young active athletic individuals. MR imaging has become one of the modalities of choice in the assessment of foot and ankle injuries. Accurate interpretation of MR images and diagnosis of pathology requires familiarity with normal anatomical variants and common diagnostic pitfalls. This article describes the common anatomical variants and technical pitfalls in MR imaging of the foot and ankle.

Foot and ankle pain and injuries in elite adult Irish dancers.

BACKGROUND: In Irish dance, the foot and ankle are the structures most commonly affected by pain and injury, but there is scant research examining the potential factors placing Irish dancers at risk of sustaining pain and injury in the foot and ankle. STUDY DESIGN: An observational study examining the factors linked to pain and injury in the foot and ankle in elite adult Irish dancers. METHODS: The biopsychosocial characteristics of 29 subjects with no previous pain and injury in the foot and ankle were compared to 53 subjects who cited the foot and ankle as their most troublesome bodily are

Imaging evaluation of traumatic ligamentous injuries of the ankle and foot.

Sports ankle injuries are very common worldwide. In the United States, it is estimated that 2 million acute ankle sprains occur each year, averaging to $318 to $914 per sprain. Magnetic resonance imaging is excellent for depicting normal ankle anatomy and can elegantly demonstrate ligamentous injuries of the ankle and associated conditions after ankle sprain. This article encompasses epidemiology, biomechanics, normal anatomy, and pathologic conditions of the ankle and foot ligaments. The specific ligaments discussed include the syndesmotic ligaments, lateral ligament complex of the ankle, del

Management of common sports-related injuries about the foot and ankle.

Foot and ankle injuries are commonplace in competitive sports. Improvements in injury surveillance programs and injury reporting have enabled physicians to better recognize and manage specific foot and ankle injuries, with a primary goal of efficient and safe return to play. Athletes are becoming stronger, faster, and better conditioned, and higher-energy injuries are becoming increasingly common. Close attention is required during examination to accurately identify such injuries as turf toe, ankle injuries, tarsometatarsal (ie, Lisfranc) injuries, and stress fractures. Early diagnosis and man

Prevention and treatment of foot and ankle injuries in figure skaters.

Participation in the sport of figure skating has more than doubled in the past 10 years. The sport has changed with an increased emphasis on free skating, which includes jumps and spins. The actual art of "figure" skating has been eliminated from the sport. With this change, there is an increased volume of foot and ankle injuries in figure skaters. This report outlines common foot and ankle injuries in figure skaters, discusses possible causes, and outlines treatment options.

Occult osseous injuries after ankle sprains: incidence, location, pattern, and age.

We retrospectively evaluated 109 magnetic resonance studies in patients with prior ankle sprains to investigate the frequency and pattern of bone bruises. Patterns of bone bruises were then correlated with the ligaments injured. In addition, the age of the injury was determined from medical records to correlate the presence of bone bruises with the temporal period from injury. Bone bruises occurred in 39% of ankle sprains. Multiple bone bruises were seen in 40% of those with bone bruises; they occurred more frequently in patients with multiple ligaments injured. The marrow changes may be secon

Foot-ankle injuries: influence of crash location, seating position and age.

Foot-ankle injuries have increased in relative importance in recent years. As a basis for future countermeasures, an epidemiology study has been undertaken using Swedish accident data from Folksam Insurance. The database consists of 805 foot-ankle injuries out of 57,949 car occupant injuries reported from 1985 to 1991. The influence of crash location, seating position and occupant age is determined for the frequency, incidence and rate of foot-ankle injury in car crashes. Frontal car crashes produce 76% of the AIS 2-3 foot-ankle injuries with 13% in side impacts and 8% in roll-overs. The rate

Management of acute and chronic lateral ligament injuries of the ankle.

Acute and chronic lateral ligament injuries of the ankle represent a common but persistent problem to orthopedic specialists. A comprehensive physical examination and classification system were proposed as an approach to this problem. Guidelines for both conservative and surgical management for acute and chronic injuries are described. A comparison of the most common lateral ligament repairs is provided, with emphasis on the benefits of the so-called anatomic repair.

[Orthotic devices in the treatment of injuries of the ankle joint].

For immobilization of foot-crus segment in case of damages of talocrural articulation region is proposed a short orthese, made of polyvic. Elastic properties of the material at convergence of the orthese walls allow to develop the compressive force in the region of distal tibiofibular syndesmosis up to 90 N. Immobilization reliability was judged by tensometry. An orthese allows to set the foot subluxation, make reposition of the malleolus fragments. In case of fracture of the lower third of fibula an appliance with concave control pelot, made on the basis of an orthese, is used. The treatment

Lateral ligament injuries of the ankle. Results of primary surgical treatment.

76 cases of fresh lateral ligament injuries were operated on by primary suture. The preoperative diagnosis of severe lateral ligament sprain was based on clinical and radiological instability as seen by talar tilt and anterior drawer sign tests. A good diagnostic accuracy was achieved. A walking cast was worn for four weeks after the operation. A follow-up study was undertaken 24 to 44 months after the operation. 71 ankles were excellent or good, three ankles were fair, while only two ankles showed a poor operative result. Both patients with a poor result had suffered a recurrent sprain. It is
